I tend to love movies based on "graphic novels" ( V for Vendetta, Sin City) but based on comics i find them quite unimaginative and shallow stories.

I have never been a reader of graphic narratives.
Then I shall enlighten you!
"Graphic novel" is a format, just like "comics." As such, V for Vendetta and Sin City (both released in portions through compilation comics, then Sin City later released as issues) were both comic books (see also: 300). The pretension some apply to "graphic novel=smart/okay to like, comic books=kiddy stuff/stupid" is silly, and our good friend Neil Gaiman indeed hates it himself, correcting a snob who was put off him as a "comic writer" until he discovered Neil wrote Sandman--"Ohhh, you mean GRAPHIC NOVELS"--which Neil thought was stupid.

I'm with Neil here; this is like people who "hate manga" or "hate anime"--it's a medium, not a singular item.

I'm not, of course, accusing you of such pretensions, merely noting this for the record.

That said, the more abysmal representations tend to be of the "smart" books--300 and V for Vendetta, for instance. ("Hey! Let's insert mutant freak things!" and "Hey! Let's take grey commentary and make it simplistically black and white with a sledgehammer nudge to tell you it's about the Bush administration instead of Thatcher this time!")
