I'm trying to gather opinion on online multiplayer gaming. Who likes it? Who hates it? And why??

This question is so incredibly vague that I don't think anyone can possibly answer it unless they're Yahtzee and just shun multi-player no matter what.

I like multi-player in some games (namely Call of Duty and FIFA) but can't stand it in others (namely arcadey FPSs, Madden, and MMORPGs). So yes, I like multi-player games depending on what game we're talking about.

I don't like shoehorned online multiplayer, otherwise I don't mind it. I'll readily play DOTA or TF2, but try to make something like any Mario platformer a multiplayer game, and I lose interest. And my Internet can get quite fussy when I do play those games sometimes, so there's something keeping me on singleplayer most of the times.

There's also the fact that I've never found a multiplayer experience that truly hung me by my balls and made me experience the game. I haven't found that awesome experience like Dark Souls for multiplayer.[footnote]I'm aware that there is some sort of multiplayer in Dark Souls, but I'm talking pure multiplayer, like in DOTA, COD, TF2, etc.[/footnote]

I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate it, to each his own and all that, I just dont play online ever. For me playing games is mostly about the experience and story, not about trying to be good at the game or beat others or having some sort of social experience, so I stick to singelplayer-games (or on rare occassions I will play with friends on the same couch).

Multiplayer for the win. Playing against people is always a superior experience and will be until AI can match up without cheating.

You consider Call of Duty not an arcadey FPS?

That said, wtf does arcadey mean...

When I say arcadey, I'm referring to the SUPER arcadey stuff (Unreal Tournament; Tribes; etc.). CoD certainly tip-toes that line but I put it closer to "realistic" then arcadey (obviously realistic is not the right word but I think you'll get my meaning here).

Ah didn't notice you were new. Welcome to the Escapist, stay out of the basement, and if anything goes wrong, blame Kross. Hope you like it here. :)

I don't love it or hate it though. I really don't care about most multiplayer, I much prefer singleplayer, but that doesn't mean I don't like multiplayer. I like some multiplayer games , Tribes: Ascend is fun, and I played WoW for god knows how long(mostly solo though).

I gotta say, you really need a middle ground option, because rarely are things so black and white, especially with such a diverse subject as online multiplayer (since that includes everything from minecraft to Call of Duty to Team Fortress to WOW to EVE to Farmville)

I lean towards love, since most of the time i enjoy playing with other people. However, not every game earns my love for their online multiplayer, or really multiplayer at all, so i cant say i love them universally, just most of the time.

And this thread gets the nickname "Binary Domain". My opinion on multiplayer is a little more nuanced than just love/hate. "I like multiplayer" but this statement must be accompanied by the clarifying statements "but only on platforms that do not demand I pay for the privilege" and "and only on the rare occasions that i can muster up the enthusaism required to co-operate / compete with strangers." That's my take on multiplayer.

I usually love multiplayer gaming but these days it's getting harder to love playing a few of them due to DLC fracturing the multiplayer's player base into two with me usually being the one who doesn't like investing in too much multi DLC.

To me multiplayers of today feel like really short holiday vacations where a multiplayer could last a few months or maybe 3 years tops and then it died and it's time to move onto the next online game which again is why I dislike paying for multiplayer DLC to a point where the money loses it's value, singeplayer DLC however remains indefinite as it always will.

Good multiplayer on a private server with friends of comparable skill = awesome. Otherwise I usually stick to solo.

I hate online multiplayer. Mutliplayer that involves one console and one living room or possibly a private LAN I'm more open to.

I enjoy PvP-style multiplayer sometimes, depends on the game mostly. However I love co-op and wish developers would explore it more.

Agree that the poll lacks options, so I'm not voting.

I like online multiplayer a lot, but I don't love it because of the other people inhabiting it. I've been on Xbox Live for 6 years and have dealt with some of the stupidest and intolerant people in my entire life, but I keep going back because for every 1 person like that, there are usually 2 okay people to balance them out.
