Just a quick question for you peeps I have recently been looking at purchasing a Musou type game or more specifically Warriors Orochi 3 PS3 or One Piece Pirate Warriors.

Now the last game I played of this type is Dynasty Warriors 2 on PS2 which I found fun but that was enough for me for quite a while actually I tried Samurai Warriors 2 for a bit as well I think but quickly gave up after a timed mission made me redo a 40 minute earlier mission to have another go.

If anyone has played the first 2 I mentioned I would like your opinions on them are they good or should I say fun I know the gameplay is shallow and repetitive but sometimes I want something I can just switch off to and mash on. Character wise I enjoy One Piece and so I believe I will enjoy that game to an extent. With Warriors Orochi 3 while I know a little about Chinese and Japanese history and some associated historical figures the main characters I am interested in is Ryu Hayabusa and Ayane (just like most people it seems).

Now I will only get one because once I play one of these types of games thats me done for another 5 years or so at least so just wondering about peoples opinions I will also mention that I can get Warriors Orochi 3 for about half the price of One Piece as its on disc here in the UK while I believe its only available on PSN in North America (and disc on 360).

So anyway what do you all think of this series or types of game rather? largely I find them shallow repetitive and sometimes tedious but they can also be satisfying and a nice palette cleanser in small doses oh and if anyone is a veteran of Dynasty warriors Samurai warriors and its ilk and wants to point out specific differences (bar the obvious) between the two games I have mentioned feel free to offer your opinion.

Well personally I love them but judging by what you just said I doubt you'd enjoy any later iterations that much.

One of the most appealing things about the Orochi games is the crossover scenario and the interactions between characters. Without any prior knowledge of the characters and games (real life knowledge hardly means anything) then you'll miss out on a big aspect of the enjoyment.

I haven't played Pirate Warriors so I can't tell you anything about it.

Bloody hell a response :) cheers hmmm well im not sure if I will enjoy them or not I mean I feel like a new musou game Dynasty Warriors 2 was a long time ago, since whether I will enjoy it or not is speculation and I have been gone from the series for a long time what gameplay upgrades has the series undergone? I seem to remember bodyguards and stuff from my very brief time with Samurai Warriors which seemed cool.

So what happened to the scenarios now, have they improved? and besides loads of characters (some of which I would quite like to see how they have been adapted in game) what other upgrades has the series undergone since Dynasty Warriors 2 I have done some research but that only tells me so much. Does it feel significantly improved? especially as it is now on next gen.

Oh and whats the story like I know its hardly likely to set the world alight but does it have a semblance of one thats entertaining (even though thats subjective)?

Also I hear there is an edit mode to create your own scenarios which I really like the sound of is that open to a lot of scope or is it difficult to actually get much out of it?

Dynasty Warriors 4 was the best last one that I played. Tryed DW7 on PS3 and it was actually worse, they got rid of equipment and bodyguards and added horse calling and weapon substitution (garbage) and the camera is still worthless, Omega Force really isn't trying at all.

I haven't actually played either, but I sunk tons of hours into DW7 and DW7: Xtreme Legends and I can vouch for their quality and their massive amounts of content. I doubt you'll feel short-changed by either, but if they've lavished the same attention on Warriors Orochi 3 that they have on the last few Dynasty Warriors entries (and I suspect they have) then you certainly won't be disappointed. It's also been getting pretty good reviews, which is odd for a Musou game, so there's that.

However, it's undergone a fair few changes from DW2-DW6, with the entire combo system being changed to emphasise flow and make it look sorta like a martial arts movie. It's back to the traditional style for DW7, mind, so you might find more in common with Warriors Orochi 3 than you think. Another big change is in weapons; each character can now switch between their primary weapon and a secondary weapon of your choice during battle, leading to some interesting comboes. There's also a seal system (stat boosters you give to your weapons) and an upgrade system, giving it some rpg-lite elements. Finally, there's the kingdom of Jin, a 4th kingdom which arose after the destruction of Wei. Those are the big changes from DW2-DW7, which I'm pretty sure carry over to Warriros Orochi 3.

Hope that's helped :)

The Dynasty Warriors Gundam games are my favorite. They powers are useful, the story is fun and its awesome collecting upgrades. They are also the longest by far of any Dynasty Warriors games i've ever played. Check em out

As someone who owns both, let me chime in.

Orochi 3

The amazing thing about this game is just how much GAME you get. There are TONS of characters to take and raise. Unique missions, bonding dialogue, tons of unlockables and a weapon fusion system. If you know the characters indepth, seeing their interactions with one another and how they react to their predicaments is just a joy to experience.

One Piece Musou

I recommend this to One Piece fans as the story is more of a "greatest hits" than a full narrative experience. While the game does a good job transitioning through all the arcs and giving you proper context of your actions, much of the emotional weight of these scenes such as the ending of Drum Island will be lost on new fans.

With that said the game is absolutely AMAZING to play and watch. The team really outdid themselves with the character animations as each playable character handles completely differently from everyone else. With the smaller cast, Koei was able to give everyone and expansive combo roster that really shows everyone's unique fighting style and personality. A minor complaint is that you can really tell the game engine was centered around Luffy as he has the largest variety of attacks and his boss battles have all sorts of unique situations and finishers. The other characters play more like traditional musou characters and it would have been really cool if they made special finishers for them too but that would be asking too much.

I've only recently became a fan of the samurai series. I only owned Dynasty warriors 7 so i'm still a begginer in that series.

Anyway I got Orochi 3 as well and its pretty awesome. Loads and loads of characters, much interaction and fun battles.

I still consider samurai warriors chronicles the best one though.

Yep, pretty much how it is with the majority of people. There's a number of Achilles fanboys out there, but most people wanted Ayane and Ryu...myself included. I had promised myself after DW 6: Empires, that I was done buying Koei games...then they had to go and release WO3 with those two characters and suck me bak in.

Despite the fact that I'll fully admit being biased towards Orochi, I'd say you should go with One Piece. Personally I hate the anime and don't see the appeal of it at all, but I'm speaking as someone trying to give advice. You say you know the characters and story better where as you don't know too much about the figures in Orochi. That right there is a big flag pointing you to One Piece: you're more familiar with what's going on.

That said, you'd be starting at the end of a trilogy if you went with Orochi. And while it's not entirely necessary that you play the first two games first, you'd be missing out on a LOT of context with the story, and it's likely certain aspects wouldn't make sense.

Rolling out my party of Zhong Hui, Ginchiyo Tachibana, and Wang Yi. Hui is an area of effect machine, Wang Yi slices and dices geenrals, and Ginchiyo does both really well.
Hmmmmm, I've used most of the characters (haven't played in a while, and I've still got some to go xD), but if I narrowed down my "dream team" it would have to be Fuma for cavalry since he can quite literally mow down entire armies in a matter of moments while on a horse. Ayane's my officer-assassin. And when it absolutely MUST die: sweet lil Joan of Arc. Her musou attack is absurdly powerful. So much so that, keeping with her theme, I call it the Act of God attack since it really doesn't look like she does much at all...just a flash and pretty much anything near her is vaporized. :3

That's of course assuming I don't just go with the blatantly over-powered characters like Orochi X, Lu Bu, and Honda.

Every now and then I like tossing in Zhuge Liang as a mage character. :3

Well between 2 and 7 there are massive changes to pretty much everything except for the absolute core of the gameplay. Everything now is much sleeker, more fluid, has more content (lots o' content) and just generally more of everything (which is some rare cases is a bad thing).

DW5 was the last DW game to feature bodyguards.

So what happened to the scenarios now, have they improved? and besides loads of characters (some of which I would quite like to see how they have been adapted in game) what other upgrades has the series undergone since Dynasty Warriors 2 I have done some research but that only tells me so much. Personally, what I've observed is that while the combat and general gameplay has become smoother and easier to use this has actually led to the game becoming easier which may annoy some people. Personally I just play it for fun and it doesn't bother me but I can imagine how some may find the general lack of challenge as a big problem.

At least until you put it to the highest difficulty and come face to face with a group of archers...that's not fun.

As far as details go that would take a long time to explain as you've pretty much missed out on about of decade of games.

Oh and whats the story like I know its hardly likely to set the world alight but does it have a semblance of one thats entertaining (even though thats subjective)?
Well Dynasty Warriors is still following Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the Three Kingdoms period of China. The most significant change came in DW7 when they introduced the Jin Dynasty which came in late in the period and have only been mentioned and were indirectly featured in Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends.

One thing that I find very entertaining and one of the biggest draws for me is seeing the different interpretations of historical events and characters.

Some of the games feature an edit mode.

All of the Empires spinoffs feature an edit mode which has become significantly better with each game. Koei recently released a demo for the Dynasty Warriors 7: Empires edit mode (which you need a Japanese PSN account to download) and I'm having a blast just simply creating characters and testing them out.

Also, Dynasty Warriors 4 features my favourite video game soundtrack ever. Just sayin'.

I like the genre. If you're into anime, there's also Bleach Soul Ressurecion and Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes. Both are PS3 exclusive if it matters, and are great games in the genre. There's also the Dynasty Warriors Gundam games, of which 3 is the most recent, and best IMO. For a more martial arts bent, there's also Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage.

I'd personally recommend Sengoku Basara, as there's characters to level up and equip, and can even unlock new combos.

Sadly, I haven't played Any of the Warriors Orochi games or One Piece. Still, some good for thought!

I liked the musou games until I played Kingdom Under Fire.

Sorry, but KuF showed Koei how that sort of hack n' slash/strategy SHOULD be done; full control over your units, ability to build your own units, and far more tactical all with the same fun of chopping apart anyone foolish enough to challenge you.
I've seen this at bargain bins in GameStop. Which Kingdom Under Fire game is is specifically, and is it really that good? The generic name and cover really turned me off, but if it's great, I might get it.

I still need to get the later Orochi games, but I remember playing the first Warriors Orochi and being blown away by it. It's like they took my complaints about the Dynasty Warriors series (the games I played, at least, 3 and 5:XL) and fixed them by applying Samurai Warriors concepts (tying movesets to leveling up instead of weapon selection, differentiating between people with similar weapons via moveset styles and personal skills), and while they were at it adding half-decent voice actors for the DW cast (while simultaneously making the the SW cast worse, sadly, but can't have everything).

Minor correction: Sengoku Basara is also available on the Wii. Oddly enough, I like it even more than any of the Musou games I've played.

Sengoku Basara's a great game. I love how over-the-top anime it is. Screw Lu Bu, I like being able to literally slice through a waterfall and run around with twin flaming spears and stuff. I REALLY hope we get another game in the series.

Considering the sales and general reception of Samurai Heroes and the fact that Utuge and the HD collection were never released in the west I doubt we'd be getting any future SB games soon (if ever).

Capcom did a very bad job at advertising the SB series in the west.
