As of right now I'm very excited for RE5, but I want a new game with lasting online multiplayer appeal. My library currently consists of:

Full games:
Left 4 Dead
Halo 3
Gears of War 2
Guitar Hero II
Guitar Hero III
Guitar Hero: WT
Grand Theft Auto IV

Arcade games:
Rez HD
Doom
Banjo-Kazooie
Worms
Castlevania: SotN

Xbox Originals:
Halo: Combat Evolved
BLACK

Out of those games, Halo 3 still has a massive community but I am greatly irked by the notion of paying more money to play a game that I have had since its release; I do not have the Legendary Map Pack and many of the playlists require it to play certain gametypes.

I have played the hell out of Left 4 Dead and GH has gotten very old. I am seriously considering trading in all three of my GH games and the controller for cash because I just don't play them anymore, and not at GameStop, but at a local electronics/music/movies/games resale shop. With that money I'd easily be able to buy RE5 and maybe even another game used, or a points card for more arcade games. I eagarly await Banjo-Tooie, but that will not quench my thirst for good multiplayer.

What do you guys recommend?

Uh - Gears 1? Multiplayer is a LOT better than in Gears 2, and less lag-prone, although the learning curve is a bit steeper.
Apart from that, Aegis Wing is short but multiplayer makes it a lot more fun, and it's a free download.

EDIT:

I agree, Gears 2 has great multiplayer. Call of Duty 4 and The Orange Box would also make great choices.

Uh... I don't see a poll?

Anywho, Call of Duty 4, or 5 (my money is on 4, my roommate would argue for five) are great picks. You could always grab GoW2, though I actually don't have it. You want something that will last I'm sure, and while The Orange Box is nice, it's worlds better on the PC...

Forza 2 will last....Grid is a very solid title, if you're into racing. Solid multiplayer titles are CoD4/WaW.

Saints Row 2 is hilarious awesome fun.

Games to get:
Full
Lost Odyssey
PGR-4
Mass Effect
Viking - Battle For Asgard
Bioshock

Arcade
Ikaruga
3 On 3 NHL Arcade

Games to avoid like the plague:
Project Sylpheed - Do not let the flashy intro movie with voiceover by no less an actress than the amazing Claudia Black fool you. This is an awful, awful game. And considering its' from Square Enix, that is shameful.

I already have TOB and Bioshock on PC.

FEAR 2 is looking good, but I do need something that isn't FPS and will be worth the money.

PGR-4 is immense fun in both single and multiplayer. I would also recommend PGR-3, but that doesn't have bikes.

I would recommend Bioshock, Great game and alot of bang for your buck. Our The Orange Box, 5 great games for 29.99 is a great deal. But if you want really deep Multiplayer then i think Call Of Duty 4.

a few games i got at cheap would be
the darkness
shadow run

the darkness has a good story mode and the multiplayer is very good since you can switch between creatures that jump around and walk on walls to humans who can shoot and are harder to kill, only problem is multiplayer doen't always have alot of people, and the free maps keep getting corrupted for me (not sure if it happens to anyone else) so you have to keep redownloading them occasionally

shadow run is only $20 at most becuase it is only multiplayer, it's not your average fps becuase it combines 4 diffrent races (human, elf, troll, and dwarf) along with a number of technolgy (gliders, aiming assist thing, and atleast 7 or 8 more) along with magic, pretty much all the variants are capture the flag, from one side to both having a flag along with a variant wher who ever holds the nuetral flag knows wher everyone is.

there is a demo for both games on the marketplace the darkness has single player and shadowrun as an online demo

edit:
lost planet is also good, it is a 3rd person shooter, has a decent multiplayer on most days, story line is good, and the graphics are really good to (mostly the explosins)

it also has two seperate demos one for single player and another for online multilpayer
