Lame fanboys will always be lame fanboys... You can't win any argument with them, no matter how valid and justifiable your points are. They have pressed into their mind two things: "THIS GAME IS THE FUCKING BEST" and "THIS GAME ISN'T NOT THE BEST". Seriously, I think his CO would be more upset is his soldiers were ashamed to talk about their experiences in the Armed Forces serving their country. And I think he has every right to "boast" about is as experience in the military has always and especially today (fighting wars and all that) being in the Army means a lot.
He shouldn't have cussed you out but the response to that should have been more constructive as in
"Really, you find the Story good? Maybe I'm approaching it from a different perspective, could you explain why you like the plot of Halo so much in comparison to other games and non-game narratives"

Instead of saying
"I saw a review of it online and all it said was that the story just holds the game together." or "I dunno, Bungie isn't known for great stories. Look at almost any other gaming company for that." you should accept their opinion. This is a game where you run around shooting people not a book that is purchased for and relies solely upon the story.
