Hello all

Something I like to do round Halloween time is to play through a horror themed game, the scarier/more fun the better. Usually because of budget the choices are fairly limited but with a nice raise from work I can afford to have a decent choice! Thing is, which would be best? I ask you, escapist community, which would you recommend and why?

See the poll for the ones I have my eye on for the systems I own. I haven't actually played any of these, and of course if you have any advice or suggestions I haven't said please feel free to post.

Thanks Guys :)

REmake is great. There's a port of it on Wii that lets you use the remote, and I feel like it's better that way. (Not motion controls, mind you. Tank controls just works better with a D-pad IMO, and the Wiimote's D-pad is in a more comfortable position than the Gamecubes.) It might be cheaper too. And you can use the Gamecube controller if you want. Unless you're a collector, no downsides!

Other than that, Super Castlevania 4 and Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts are also excellent choices. SC4 is definitely less frustrating though. It's really hard, but it eases you into it instead of throwing you into the thick of it at the start. And it's a bit more Halloween-y.

Thanks for the reply. I actually already have the GameCube version for a while back, is it worth something?

Neverending Nightmares is coming out shortly and it looks very cool. I don't know if I'll be holding out till Halloween to play it, but I'll almost definitely be picking it up. It's also something a little different from the rest of the titles on your list/

Ahhh man, if just for good nostalgia you should definitely give Silent Hill 2 a run; it's just eerie, the story is great and the unease is as thick as the fog that clouds the whole of the town. Sympathetic characters, great atmosphere... I love it.

Nowww on the opposite end of the spectrum, Outlast is a lot of fun too; the atmosphere and tension are also there but in a much more jarring sense and there's the whole "survival horror" aspect but the characters are fun and some of them are intriguing.

If you decide to go with the Dead Space trilogy... errrrr don't play the third one xD It's not a survival horror, it's an action 3rd person shooter so if you're going for all three just to complete the series, I don't blame ya but... it's much less Halloween than the first two or any other game on your poll~

Silent Hill 2 for great scares, atmosphere, and most importantly the ever present feeling of existential dread.

I'd go with REmake. Seems a better fit for Halloween, being in a spooky mansion with zombies and creepy crawlers and all. Sure, Silent Hill 2 is scary too, but it's more the psychological kind with it's heavy themes of relationship and sexuality.

Outlast is just terrible. Unless you can somehow look past the godawful stealth and see some actual quality, but I sure as hell couldn't.

Resident Evil Remake and Dead Space 2 are both fantastic. RE Remake is probably the pinnacle of pure atmospheric survival horror. Can't wait for Mikami's next game Evil Within next month, which also looks really cool. Alien Isolation is another new release I'm really looking forward to.

Dead Space 2 is more action horror but one of the best games in that particular genre. It's like Resident Evil 4 but in space. :p Dead Space 3 kinda sucked b/c it didn't really have any atmosphere and levels/missions were designed around co-op. Dead Space 1 is also good but I think the gameplay in DS2 is much more visceral.

I clicked Super Castlevania IV but am thinking I should have clicked Super Ghouls n Ghosts...I have both anyway so I'll likely end up playing (if not playing completely through) Castlevania because SGNG is Hella-difficult. I very recently went back and tried to play some Resident Evil 4 but I just couldn't get into it again. I never really could get into it to begin with honestly...maybe next time.

Those are all very good. Is Alien Isolation out already?

I love Silent Hill 2 and replay it every now and then. I'm not sure if it's in line with that "Halloween spirit". I'd say Resident Evil or Outlast are more attuned.

If you don't have either when they first come out I'd say Alien Isolation or The Evil Within. Otherwise I'd say Silent Hill 2. Amazing game great atmosphere, pleanty of scares/nerve-tingling moments.

I'm going classic this Halloween by playing games like Diablo 2, Painkiller, Breath of Death 7 (though not actually scary), (possibly) Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, and Nocturne (not the Shin Megami Tensei game, the classic for the computer). Then for a dose of the more up-to-date stuff; it'll be Dead Space, Killing Floor, Amnesia, and Alan Wake.

Unfortunately I can't seem to get a hold of a copy of Michigan: Report from Hell; this makes me sad. :(

You really shouldn't have put Silent Hill 2 on that list. Most of us here have a bit of a hard on for that game.

EDIT: Just voted. The poll completely reflects that.
