Wait, how the hell does a game cause a console to overheat? I mean, wow, this sounds like the kind of thing people would joke about. "The game is so beautiful and cool that it melted my processors!"

I don't really know if I consider anyone to blame in this situation, especially since I'm as confused as anyone about what the actual cause of this is. But, I mean, game consoles don't last forever. That's just a fact. I mean, I had to replace my PS2 and my Xbox 360 (RRoD) at various points.

I'm honestly just baffled at how L.A. Noire can be doing anything to cause hardware to malfunction. I need more information, to be sure.
you...replaced..your ps2?

that Goliath of a console?

I have yet to replace that thing..and I left it running on kingdom hearts for 2 months straight in my room because i was too lazy to save the game..and it still runs like a boss to this very day.

the xbox 360 is a bit more understandable, especially if your someone who doesn't have the A.C. running all the time like i do

OT: R* should have figured this out during play testing, this is their fault, sony has a set product and R* should have prepared better for this, this obviously is not just sony or xbox's fault, it's them not testing it enough on the consoles themselves obviously in "average citizen" environments obviously.

How does LA Noire overheat the systems? It's not all that graphically intensive.

What's the story here?
I know that for some pc game\video card combinations, there was an example where a low intensity loading screen caused the system to overheat and shutdown-- monitoring the FPS before that would happen would show an FPS in the hundreds-- on a static screen.

Shutdown happens fast. I assume noir is having some analogous effect.

Hmm I will probably wait to get LA Noire for a bit then at least until I hear more about this issue. As an aside it's been known that The Sims 3 can overheat graphics cards and you have to be careful with it. I think they may have fixed that by now in a patch though. Pretty wierd thing but it did happen to alot of people. I don't doubt that it could happen to consoles too.

I've played it for 20 hours and I haven't heard nor felt any problems with my console or the game.

Good call not releasing the game on PC, Rockstar. Working console hardware to the point of meltdown was a much better idea.
Right? I mean, RIGHT?

Oh well, I got me a PS3s, which I never use, so, meh:p

Got a first gen 360, and played LA Noire for four hours straight last night, with no problems. I don't know if that holds true for all xboxes, but I'm certainly not worried.

I'm really concerned about this. I mean, I really want to play the game, it looks fantastic, but these reports make me really uneasy. Many people are complaining about bricked PS3s and nobody's taking responsibility, meaning that nobody's trying to fix this. And I have a fat PS3, too.

I'll have to pass this game until somebody proves these rumors wrong or somebody says "fine, we screwed up, here's a patch / new firmware", since I am in no condition to get a new PS3 if this one breaks.

A 19 blade fan and some arctic cooling MX-2 thermal paste will fix that right up for ya.. just have to be willing to do this [http://www.llamma.com/PS3/repair/PS3_disassembly_tutorial.htm]. Might as well toss in a 320GB hard drive while you're at it. Those are the things my PS3 has, and it runs cool and quiet all the time.
...oh, and the fan thing doesn't apply if you have a slim. I'm not sure if there are replacements out for that, though the thermal paste and HDD are still probably valid mods.

Heat dissipation is pretty much the only area where Sony took the cheap route in manufacturing the PS3, and it really makes an otherwise great piece of engineering into kind of a dud. Thankfully, the mod parts only cost (at least when I bought 'em, a year ago) around $30 for the fan, $8 for the thermal paste, and they fix your YLOD/overheating issues completely.

Ive been playing this game for a good few hours now and can assure this game "so far" is probably one of the very best games I have ever played, the story is brilliant, the immersion is Unparalleled, the game play puts together so many mechanics to keep it fresh and new. Some might say that searching for clues is boring but in my opinion there is nothing more thrilling than using clues you've found to trap suspects in webs of there own lies. The only thing i will say against it is that it a bit easy (at the moment i still hav'nt finished it yet). But this keeps the game flowing and dying in this game can be a bit immersion breaking. But overall this is still possibly my favourite game of all time and I would encourage everyone and anyone to buy it because if this game becomes a flop this is going to discourage gaming developers from pushing the bar and making something new and original in the future.

I thought the deal with the PS3 is that even though the games look similar to the Xbox 360 graphically, there is actually far more potential in the system. If so shouldn't it be able to run a game which the Xbox 360 runs, with ease? It sounds like a error with the cooling system rather than the game being too CPU/GPU intensive.

[x] do not play that game if you like your console in its unbricked state.

Sony is to blame for this and so is microsoft since Xboxes apparently will be fried also.

This shouldn't even be possible. It should not be possible to damage a console with the heat that is generated due to bad software.
Whatever that software might do, it can only have the components of the console run at 100% capacity. If that is enough to fry the thing, that thing is not up to any acceptable Quality standards.

My usual spiel would be some PC fanboy rant about how my PC can not be damaged due to overheating, no matter how shitty the software is. Or the firmware. Blablabla. If you'd cared about a gaming PC, you would have looked it up. Either way, you already know by now if you're a console- or a PC person.

I will say this though:
You should be able to play new games for your console without even thinking about noises and the possibility of the console being fried because that shouldn't even be a possibility.

I've yet to see any concrete proof that this game is the cause of people's problems. I suspect it's more likely that a few people got confused and thought correlation equals causation, posted it on the internet, internet goes wild.

That's how things usually go.

But this generation most people find it perfectly acceptable.

This is one of the reasons I'll be abandoning consoles when the next gen rolls around.
If you have to do all this high maintenance BS, it may as well be worth it.

I'll just say this: It cannot be a software's problem if hardware overheats.

Why?

Because even if they coded the game to use 100% CPU and GPU power throughout, the hardware should be able to handle that. If the hardware was designed with insufficient cooling, that's the hardware manufacturer's fault and nobody elses.

The hardware should be capable of 100% utilization without melting down.

If it can't stand being used then it's faulty (maybe worn fans or other components) or was designed poorly to begin with. The only way I can see software being at fault is if it thrashed the hard disk mercilessly or something.

I've not experienced any freezing or problems of any kind on my 360, but I have installed all 3 discs to my HDD.

If L.A. Noire has been causing some consoles to overheat, my guess that it would be because the massive amounts of data (especially the facial data) that is being streamed from the disc is causing the disc drives to be overworked and produce a lot of heat through friction and it's constantly moving parts.

However, if this was true, it would only apply to 360 users who haven't installed the game, or to PS3 users if they haven't done a full install.

Does anybody know whether L.A. Noire on the PS3 can be fully installed to the HDD, or can it only do the mandatory install and has to stream the majority of data from the disc?

If the PS3 can only do the small mandatory install, this could explain why this rumoured problem is apparently more prevalent on the PS3.
