They're playing farmville because their friends are playing, word of mouth spreads, and so everybody plays.

But even if Zynga promotes a hardcore, non-browser game, i bet the people who play farmville will not jump ship. Farmville is a social activity, interaction with other people, in form of a farming simulator. It doesnt represent gaming, it represents simple leisure..

While i agree with you that most people won't "jump ship" i disagree that none of them will. If even 1/100 of the people who play farmville and other zynga games are introduced to the medium through zynga then we still win a massive victory for gamers everywhere.

People that are "introduced" to gaming through casual sought of stuff generally seem to stick to that level of depth and intensity in games.

Give her Portal, I'd like to know the reaction/change in attitude.
I'd say Portal is one of the most casual-friendly, and yet greatest, games out there.

Thank god for that eh?

One day, your Mum clicks Half Life instead. The Horrors!

OT: Maybe. My Dad loves Sports and Racing games so I must convince him to play Shooters.
My Mum playing it? I don't really think so.

My parents have never even touched Farmville, even though my mum is on Facebook. My nan hasn't either and she's also on Facebook. However, although my mum has never been much of a gamer, she actually started me on gaming by getting me into the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro series when I was little. Since then I've become much more hardcore, while she's stayed casual but still occasionally borrows my DS for Brain Training, Mario Kart and Professor Leyton. She also owns her own Wii.

So I don't mind casual gaming, in fact, I enjoy the odd game of Wii Golf and Wii Bowling myself too. She'll never be a hardcore gamer, but my mum is still interested to a slight extent, and that's through casual games.

Farmville is NOT a game though. It's something where you click, wait, and repeat. A game is something with an actual challenge, and whatnot. So I reckon casual games can be good as an intro to gaming itself. But Zynga's 'games' are definitely not.

My mother plays a lot of FarmVille and PetVille and CafeWorld and whatever other stupid games are on Facebook. However, I did loan her my old DS and a copy of "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney" and she played all the way through it. Maybe there's hope yet.

I don't see it evolving too well. Yes Casual games get people into gaming, but it gets diffcult to pull them away from such an addictive game and to something better.

Having a mother who has spent most of her free time on Neopets for the past couple of years I can tell you that I don't see any complicated games in sight for her any time soon. however, I don't know if this is always the case. at the moment, to me at least, it looks like casual games are in no way a "gateway drug" to the more hardcore games.

I'm really glad my parents don't play farmville and any facebook games. Otherwise I would eat once every 3 days DX

Well yeah, i kinda sounded absolute on my previous post though. Sorry bout that.
I guess what i was trying to stress out is that Farmville is a social activity in form of a video game. Although, I don''t think it promotes gaming in general. While it could spark the interest of some, and would even make some consider buying a good pc game(whether its a full game or a casual from popcap), i seriously doubt that people will say "I started my gamerlife playing farmvile".

My two cent opinion, dont troll on me ^_^

As gamers we need to recognize that Farmville is evil not because it is a piece of shit (although it is), but because it ultimately takes up market share that might otherwise be taken up by real, actual game publishers and game hardware manufacturers.
Not really. The share they take up probably wouldn't exist anyway, because nobody would be playing anything. The game is actually evil because it's designed (or, less likely, accidentally turned out)to get you addicted. It constantly makes you come back to check on everything and while you're at it, you might as well "do a wee bit of nip&tuck here and there and buy this and that", which makes you come back again.
I know there's a Cracked.com article out there, I'm just too lazy to find it :p

I picked the last option. She should go with Popcap. At least they have Peggle and Bejeweled (both of which require at least some amount of strategy)

Luckily, my mum isn't playing it. But my brother.. my full grown brother is. Which is sad considering he is also a rockstar... go figure.

Good shout right there. My mother used to play farmiville and I got sick of her telling me how many eggs she got today so I got her Plants VS Zombies. Not much more thinking used but now she's hooked on that.

I have never tried farmvile but I do know that it trns you into pretty much a zombie. My mates spent a whole 3 hour badminton session talking about it like it was the best thing in the world. So are they good for introduing people sort of, but many people will never experiance a truley good game.
