The question is, why is she threatening to take it away?
I doubt she is doing it just to be a *****

Surprised no one asked this yet.
That was my first thought. I imagine this is more a matter of her attempting to discipline her stupid kid.

Give her the case, CD drive back. See how long before she notices it is an empty case. FROM reading the OP it sounds like she doesn't realise that the shell isn't the whole PC.

Yeah, I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't just some kid whining about how his mom is actually punishing him for once.
Yup, right here. This whole...let's say "story" seems very one-sided.

Also, it's hers because no matter how old you are, you are still living in the house she's paying for. Technically, she owns everything in it. I'm 19, and I understand this concept. If you don't like it, move out.
So if I left something at a friends house he/she parents would own it since they own everything in the house? Sounds a bit odd.

I concur with everyone who says give her back the parts that she had of the original computer and keep your bits.

I'd have thought that is what a Mum might do to a twelve year-old, let alone a legal adult; tell her to stop treating you like a child. If she persists, do what the other Escapists are telling yo and take out everything that you bought, and give back the case and disk drive, telling her she can have it back.

Either take her to court if you can be bothered, or just simply remove all the parts which belong to you and giver her back the CD drive, the empty case and a memory stick with those 3 programs on it :)

Let me put this in perspective and keep it short...

This is MY computer
I built it
I paid for the parts
almost every piece of this is MINE!

...my mom says that it's hers and she allows me to use it, and she constantly threatens to take it away!

Sure it was hers originally... but after she killed it with a virus and said "you can have it" and I replaced EVERY PART OF IT. she wants it back?

Mind you Yes I'll admit, the Plastic Shell casing and the CD-drive are hers... but the DVD drive, the RAM, the processor, the video card, the motherboard, the speakers, the headset, the hard drive, and 99% of the installed files (everything but Bookworm, The Sims, and WordPerfect)

ARE MINE! and came out of MY POCKET

...note I'm 18

another note, yes I did feel like posting this after reading about that kid and his facebook problem with his mom

...oh and the anti-virus software that keeps finding things from her facebook clicking is also mine, and she dosen't even know how to use the anti-virus software, she thinks "It works by itself and scans every day"

...yeah well WHO set it to do that?
remove th parts that are hers replace them whith new ones and give her parts back and tell her to fuck off (I would

or tell her that the computer don't have any of the orginal parts left and that you bought all new parts whith your own money and if she take it say you will call the cops on her for stealing and you are acculy able to do that beacose your 18 and she can't deside over you or your stuff anymore

or yust say she gave it to you and that you put a lot of money on making it to a hole new computer and that she will stop being a greedy ***** that want the computer back than she noticed it's better than her new one and it's really low to want something back from her son so she can feel better

Pretty offencive advices? yes, but offence is the best deffence and than she notices you got some balls in you and directly confront her she will probably stop than she notice she got no chanse to win over your will.

No way. I'm sure she will say "I said he could USE my old computer if he got it working, I never told him to upgrade it or that I'd pay for those upgrades". Still hers if that's what she said, % of parts really doesn't matter, title is hers.
Yeah, the title might be hers for the case and CD driver but not for the rest of the computer since each individual part has its own title. Therefor, if she attempts to take the computer it can legally be considered theft.

What's with people and this "house" bullshit. We're not talking about the house here, we're talking about the computer. The house might be hers, and he might be living there but that does not give her the title to everything in it. The most she can do is kick him out but giving that he's not an adult yet(it's 21 in the States, right?)that won't work out well either.

It's yours. She gave it to you, you fixed it, and you invested a huge amount of money into it. Nothing about it is hers. As for how to deal with the problem, there are a few methods of getting to a solid conclusion...

The Nice/Hard Option: Explain how a computer works, that you fixed it by buying new parts, and let her understand that YOU are letting HER use it. Make it known that she gave it to you and you have the right to boot her off the computer if you need to do something.

The Easy Option: Haul it up to your room, making everything password protected, and then lock your door. Just make sure she doesn't get anywhere near it. It's worked for me on several occasions with different electronics.

The Asshole Option: Buy yourself a new case and CD/DVD drive, install all the parts you bought and the new CD/DVD drive into the new case, and hand her back the old case and drive. While the "Here's your computer, b****." is completely optional, I would highly recommend against it.

That'll teach the ***** a lesson

OT: Just take out every bit that belongs to you and give her what she owns. If she still insists on being difficult, buy the remaining sections and the question of who owns it is solved.

3) Tell your mum to suck it

So every gift you give is still yours?

Give her an empty case and a cd drive and say "Heres your computer".

If she actualy takes it away add passwords to EVERYTHING (and write them down somewhere) and use the most confusing settings options on your computer.
I agree with this, just take out everything that's yours, give her her own parts back and buy a case yourself.

It's yours, plus since your legally an adult you can just tell her no.
And she can legally kick him out of the house, too.
At least over here, a parent is legally responsible for his/her child until he/she's 21, so I'm not so sure about that.
