Well after reading numerous forums about Bioshock, its not really a Steam problem but more of Bioshock's problem and for Civ I really have no idea, but I highly doubt its my computer because I only had it build about a month ago with really good specs
And all the drivers are up to date?

Yep triple checked that. I tried everything suggested to me in forums on how to fix Bioshock to no avail. The only time I got it to run was by disabling sound, which suggested a sound driver problem which I updated but still didn't work. So I'm just glad I got it on sale for only $5

YES!

Portal and Half Life: Source ALWAYS download every day when I connect to steam. Instantly, they just start right up. No matter how many times I cancel them it starts the download back. It's because Gmod uses the source engine so it automatically tries to download or update the source games. They need to fix it.
It's because Gmod uses those files.
Obviously not, if the game works fine without them. They use the files to build stuff in-game, but they don't actually need them.
I'm pretty sure you can't use any of the Portal content without it installed.

I think it does a good job, but it should telegraph the updates better instead of just auto when you're asleep or whatever. I like bug fixes and patches, but currently Steam seems to just sneak 'em in under the door while we're not looking.

When the Steam platform updates it springs this huge screen on us going "THESE ARE THE CHANGES, WOULD YOU LIKE TO UPDATE NOW?" It should do that for all my games, too.

Multiplayer games updating automatically are fine I guess, if I play them I mean.

If I wanted to use the portal content I would install it, but I am indifferent....

Either way, not many servers (Especially TTT which is what I normally play) use portal content because there really isn't much. The companion Cube and turrets are the only memorable objects in that game, and almost no servers actually use Chell as a model.

I'm not saying that Steam should stop with the updates, just make them optional or something
They are. Right-click on a game -> Properties -> Updates -> "Do not update this game". Too late for you now, though.

I pay $50(AU) for 3GB (I know it's insane)
I don't know how that's even possible... Even Telstra will give you 50GB for that price these days.

I'm sort of in a similar scenario. The college I'm at doesn't allow for more than 3 GB of data to be downloaded within 72 hour period between all internet-using items. While that isn't much of an issue on a day-to-day basis, loads of new updates in addition to normal downloading on three different machines begins to add up. I have games that I may never play again; shouldn't I be able to disable updates for said games?

I haven't had a problem with a steam update yet so I have to say no for now, BUT I do have a problem with steam because I can't run the Bioshock that I paid $5 for and Civ 5 crashes after about 5 hours
You sure that Steam is at fault for that?
Well after reading numerous forums about Bioshock, its not really a Steam problem but more of Bioshock's problem and for Civ I really have no idea, but I highly doubt its my computer because I only had it build about a month ago with really good specs
It's a computer problem for Civ. Games that crash after X amount of hours do so almost always because they've eaten all the RAM or reached a limit in your computer somewhere. The only solution is usually to restart your game every four hours or so.

That really shouldn't be an issue, even with Civ. I mean, come on! I get maybe five hours of playing time per WEEK right now...

EDIT: and a NVIDIA 2850(?) 1 GB Graphics card
Yeah... is that a GTX? If so, you've leaped a decade forward. What was it like!?

Or you just mean Geforce 285 GTX (more likely). Awwwww.

My main issue with Steam is that it has to get online for you to play your games. For the most part you can run offline mode or just be online, but I've had times where I had to restart my computer and the internet was down, cutting off my Steam games.

I honestly would like it if updates would work as follows:
When trying to start a game that has an update you get a window stating that there is an update that you have to dl to play the game or something and provide you a link that is a download for the patch. I really hate how Steam update always start and stop every five fucking minutes

Steam is not bad. There are some things missing in its gaming liberty, one or two issues with the online off line thing and connection times being relatively long oh and download times being long also, but generally you cannot fault it.
At one point I was unhappy with the pure exsistance of steam and its requirement for half life episode 2. But that was the time when I was using my parents diel up connection and I was only allowed to use the internet between 6 and 10 (or between cheap internet now and bed or bed of others adding the fact the lead to the computer was a golly good trip hazard). Now in the realm of broad band that is all different.

If you got a parcific update problem, you can disable that feature if you don't want it cannot remember where that is but it is there somewhere.

As for the download problems, well there is not much you can do about that unless you sort out your internet provider to get unlimited but I understand that that is situational to where you live. Your alternative is buying the disks but that also comes with its pros and cons

If you are set on steam I think it has a feature to backup installation files, so all you would need is a decent sized hard drive to store it all. Then at least you would not have to redownload games again.

So ye deal with the download issues and pay the money, Find another way to get web cheaper some how or just buy the disks.

Just as a formality, what's the wattage of your PSU? And how hot is your system running?

I really have no idea no to find those for you.
Sorry, I'm not super-computer smart, my brother got most of the parts I just helped build it

For heat though I'm pretty sure its not a problem, it has 4 internal fans that keep it really cool

I was just thinking the PSU since I've heard some of the GTX 400's being power hogs; otherwise, I would just recommend setting your graphic options to something a bit lower, and see if that keeps it stable longer.

nope, and according to a lot of the forums I read for this issue there are a ton of people
