Depends entirely upon the game. If the story being told is one of a specific individual within a universe, and especially a linear one, then absolute names are, I think, necessary in order to provided maximal characterisation. Where player-specified decisions reign and the narrative is constructed before the player as the game is played (as in most open-ended games), I think the player should be free to forge an identity just as the story itself may be forged. Obviously, though, technical limitations get in the way of this - you can only record so many lines, and I think voice-acting is imperative to a quality storytelling experience in this day and age.

I remember when I played Wind Waker and I entered the character's name as LINK. I realised I was old that day.
I named my Link, Link in Wind Waker, and Majora, and Ocarina, and Oracle of Seasons, and Oracle of Ages, and (fades into the distance).

Point is, I did that when I was 12 so I wouldn't call you old for that...

I have the creeping suspicion that I'm entirely missing your point :D
It sounds like you were just more mature than me.

I think my experience of changing character names has been bad and i'm bummed out I have to delete my game saves for my kids to appreciate the classics. Maybe I'll just keep them for myself. They probably wont care anyway.

I think that names really help me connect to my character in games. For instance. In this new little gem I have found, mount and blade, you name your character as many RPG's have made mainstay. But lacking a story(only major flaw of the game)it is refreshing to see what "Lord Krull" or "SamSon" is prospering because it allows you to create a dual persona to escape real life. That is why I play RPG's, to escape real life in favor of a different, more violent one...

I change my name to incomprehensible gargling noises which I will also do in reality if I am ever given the option to name something.
