I like nameless, faceless soldiers on games, as it shows there is actually an army involved, and not just you
i spent most of Halo 2/3 turning around to see if guys are still there, and threw myself in front of buddies on farcry 2
am i the only person that does this?

There was an interesting scene in Call of Duty 1 - you're sieging a french village under control by German paratroops, running across a field while machineguns fire at you. Up ahead a medic is dragging a soldier to cover. They'll nearly always die, but you can run up and shoot the machinegunners to save them. It was just a nice little touch, and made the generic squaddies seem much more human.

I too try to protect my nameless compatriots, but when Playing games like Halo 3 on anything but the lowest difficulty, their rather weak AI makes them almost immpossible to keep alive for long.

on Halo 1 i always took care to keep my marines alive. not only did they have their uses, but it felt like the right thing to do, even though they were nameless assholes with almost no intelligenec that i SHOULDN'T care about. i was more attached to those namless jerks than i was to my dog in fable 2, because i chose to like them. same with dogmeat in fallout 3. he was an optional follower but i was really sad when he died (taking down a Super Mutant Behemoth on his own), because i cared more about the fact that i didn't have to have him there, but brought him along anyway

I save them depending on how useful they are - in cod the ones that CAN die Are expendable and useless, in halo it helps to have them around, in farcry 2 id reload a checkpoint if one of my buddies die, becuase I never wanted to go through them begging me to put them out of their misery with their own gun...in TC's Rainbow Six vegas two the AI are pretty smart and great in combat, So its best to save them when they are down.

I don't why but i always want to save my buddies in the Halo games. I always raced up in the warthog to fend off the Covenant with a burst from the mounted gun and I always wait until every single one of them has been picked up by the pelicans, I really don't know why.

i nearly cried at the end
when you have to kill your teammates! i thought quarbarti singh was dead, because he was at mikes bar and was down as missing!
and also i did reload a checkpoint about 4 times, but on the diamond mine buddy mission, you cant get to him/her fast enough and when theyre down they die even if you put syrettes in them
and i could never shoot someone on the ground. i did by accident once. you look away. gunshot. they twitch, and are still :'(

On games like call of duty i try and protect them, but dont get overly bothered if they die.
On stalker i try my dam hardest to keep them alive, mainly because they can be so useful later on.

I have a deal with allies/NPC's, they make themselves useful and likeable and I'll try to keep them alive...they stand around picking their noses and act like bastards to me and they may find themselves either being left behind or acting as target practice (depending on my mood).
