I name them whatever seems appropriate.

I'm doing a solo challenge in the NES Final Fantasy 3 and I named my first guy "Loner!" and everyone else some variation of "Dead".

And if I'm doing a more serious game I pick names I feel fit the game world. Examples of my Kotor characters; Helio Cytran, Qayta Raycz, Darth Revan...

What do you mean that last one wasn't original. Pssh!

Edit: And my Zelda files are always my name or Link. I played the Oracle games so many times though I had Ralph, Marth and a couple of random names too in the mix.

I like to subvert names from angelology, demonlogy and so on to make twisted versions of those names that actually can be used.
Like turning Azazel into Azel wich is close to a real name in culture wich I will not name but mention that it's closer to europe then usa.

Vincent Gallien or just Vincent.
I got it from KOTOR, I was cycling through the random names when I saw it and I thought it was pretty bad-ass so now I use it for almost every game.

I tend to be serious when I pick a name for my characters or whoever else. (Mass Effect I picked Roslyn as my Shep's first name, I named my dog Alcard in Fable 2)

I choose simple names for my character in the pokemon games. I usually make my own name but a few times I'll go w/ one of the names the game provides.

And every so often I'll give a stupid/funny name to something/someone (I named a guy Asshole in Fable 2 after he kicked my dog.)

I remember NHL 2003 let you choose a name for a custom character, and if you chose a really generic name like Rob, John, or Chris, the announcers would use the first name when describing plays.

Um, OT: I go for names that aren't weird, but also not boring. I do like the opportunity to be creative with it, like in Mass Effect naming Shepard Alan :D

Usually I do the stock name if its more of a JRPG, but if I play through it again I usually do whatever. I might have a party of Major Mario, Xerxes, and Billy.

I tend to go against the XXX[Insert Misspelt Final Fantasy Character Here]XXX names that seem to be pretty popular these days.. seriously is it that hard to think of something atleast the slightest bit original.

I did go through a phase of playing pokemon and naming all of them after people out of my favourite band...my main pokemon was called Matt Bellamy my second was Dom Howard and my thrid was Chris .W. I didn't have room for the last name it is really long and I can't spell it.

In Zelda or Square Enix games I just use the stock names.

Once, I did name my character ZELDA in Ocarina of Time just to hear the line from Zelda...
Zelda - "ZELDA, that name sounds familiar."

However, I usually just make up five or six character names and re-use them in most RPGs.
