Ah, Role playing games. Sometimes they give us the choice of naming out own characters (how charming). Now I'm wondering how the escapist people think of names for their characters!

For example, do you go for a dirty name, downright silly or actually serious. Maybe you use your own name, maybe you use the name of a mortal enemy and kill the character a lot, who knows? We sure will if you tell us ;)

Personally I go for silly if I have an idea, if not I'll just take a long shot and do 'fagballs'. Never do I pick the stock names. However in pokemon I do tend to call my character OAVTTDE for some reason >.>

NOTE: I know the poll examples are horrible, they are meant to be :p)

EDIT: made the title better

I normally call them names I like, things like Dieter and Randolf or maybe even Caractacus.

Usually I go for my own name, although if the stock name is suitably impressive, or just plain better than my name I'll go for it.

Also, I tend to go for a stock name if that name has fallen into common usage and I can't not think of the character as such.

Examples of this are Cloud, Link, and Tidus.

However, for some games, like, say, the Pokemon games, I'll always use my name, if only because playing as someone who's stock name is Diamond and wears a beret feels silly.

[sub]I'd rather be me and wear a silly beret. [/sub]

Generally I just use whatever comes into my head that looks right. I have no set pattern. But it's good writing practice, I guess.

Since I write a lot of my own stories, I tend to use names of characters from that. This works for most games, (particularly FFIX) since my characters are usually based on archetypes, much the same as in game characters.

I use my name cause its funny to me when everyone has silly fantasy names and are running around with a guy named Alex. Also it makes me do everything according to how I would normally do it in real life.

For something like Oblivion, I'll make up a name that fits the world, but for just about everything else, I use my cat's name: Buffy.

I usually go for serious names, but occasionally I go for silly names that could work in the setting. One of my Fallout 3 characters was called KEYBOARD NOT FOUND, for example.

I always do the same two names:
'Daes Taris' Or 'Tanus Khuun'.
Might I ask how you got to those names? Very curious :)

I'll use other people's names, because mine isn't all that cool.

Might I ask what kind of 'other people's names' you use? I mean, celebrities, or people you know personally and like/hate?

I'm lazy, so its either my name or a variation. Although I did do the FagBalls thing with Link and named Epona "Your Dick" Try it, it gets pretty funny.

Ilia: I washed Your Dick for you!

'Daes' came as a rewording of the band 'Deas Vail'. 'Taris' just jumped into my head.
'Tanus' comes from the Tanis Station in Homeworld 2. And 'Khuun' was the awesome last name of a girl I once knew!
