Poll: Nerd-Cred Redemption

Last night I watched 2001: Space Odyssey for the first time...I'm almost old enough to have seen it in theatres (OK, so maybe not quite that old, but still...)

After I watched it, I really wanted to discuss the ending, but I was too embarrassed to admit that I hadn't seen it before. Most of my friends think I'm the quintessential nerd and I didn't want to break that faith. So now I know that my nerd-cred has been redeemed (as does anyone reading this post, I suppose) but I can't actually tell anyone.

My question is this: What is the one thing that you feel you should have done years ago but never got around to it, to the point that when you finally do you were (will be?) embarrassed to admit it to anyone?

I only watched Firefly this week.
Granted I was 9 when it first aired, but still...

It was awesome, by the way, one of the few things that lived up to the hype.

Well, I still don't like Star Wars and find the LOTR books overrated compared to how the fantasy genre later evolved. I have definitely taken some flak for those leanings but I can't say I've ever felt I had to redeem myself for them.

OK, maybe redemption wasn't exactly the right word. I never felt like I was being truly judged for not having seen or played certain nerd-culture icons, more just that I don't like to admit once I finally catch up.

Well, I still don't like Star Wars and find the LOTR books overrated compared to how the fantasy genre later evolved.

I also seem to be in the minority in believing that I can like something without liking the influential material. My wife gets on me all the time because I dislike Nirvana and Elvis, and yet I like a lot of the music that has evolved due to their presense in the industry.

I watched the Ghost in the Shell movie. I thought it was terrible. The show is so much better in every way.

Which one? The 'first'(?) one is actually pretty good, but made more sense with the context of the show.
The sequel to that, something Innocence, is so visually different and epic fails at characterisation.

I only watched Firefly this week.

I should get around to finishing that...


OT: Stargate in the right order, most of the new Avenger movies and COD (if that's still a nerd thing).

And most anime.

I thought the Dark Knight was an incredibly average movie, I loved the 2003 Hulk movie, and so far, I have yet to see a single Avenger related movie aside from the first Iron Man that I actively enjoyed. Half of them simply seemed lie money makers and an excuse to connect the movie to the Avengers (Thor, Incredible Hulk) and the rest just seemed...like random action movies.

I also think most anime aside from Gantz, Elfen Lied, Ghost in the Shell and Hellsing are crap.

Jesus Christ, all kinds of the same here. I somewhat liked the prequel trilogy (If only for the fight scenes and CGI), but the story in Star Wars always seemed so....not that great. And I never got around to finishing Two Towers since Tokien's s=writing style bored the shit out of me.

I can't say I don't like LOTR but...it seems people want me to like it. I've watched all three movies. In the cinema. For context, I don't go a lot to the cinema at all (partly because I lived in a small town. The cinema sucked hard). And even then...I can't really remember much of the plot. I remember Legoas, Gimly the battle at Helm's Deep, the walking trees (ents? Treants? how are they called there) but it's like my knowledge of the movies comes only from commercials I've seen while flipping through the channels. It didn't intrigue me at all. A friend of mine, a huge LOTR fan, basically shoved The Hobbit in my hands for me to read. I only managed to get to chapter 3 or 4 (wherever the giants are, just passed that) and finally had to give him back the book.

Oh, and I've never seen or read 2001: Space Odyssey.

I've never seen Star Wars. Original trilogy and the prequels.

I know most of the characters, the basic plot, the various memes and even watched parodies like the family guy one but never seen the actual films.

I live with the same problem, and I don't like Star Trek either. My friends often claim this makes me an "untrue nerd".

I dunno, I'm a pretty terrible nerd. Most pop culture stuff that I haven't seen, I haven't seen because I'm not interested in it.

Though there's a ton of classic movies I never got around to watching, but feel like I've seen them because I've seen the Eek the Cat parodies v: Fatal Attraction, Apocalypse Now, The Graduate, Cape Fear, etc. Someday I will watch all of those movies, and then when I watch Eek again I'll totally get all the jokes.

I pretty much have the word "nerd" stamped on my face, but I don't like Lord of the Rings at all. I'm not a huge fan of Star Trek either and I haven't watched Star Wars (original trilogy) in years and I don't own it on DVD or blu ray. I haven't seen Firefly or any iterations of Doctor Who. I also haven't seen any of the Marvel superhero movies that lead up to the Avengers. And I've never played a Final Fantasy game and I don't really want to.

Oh, and three months ago I actually had sex with another person. It was amazing.

I hadn't been much into the Avengers before? Maybe, more of a DC fan. Although I used to read Spider Man and X Men when I was younger. They didn't really push the Avengers too much in England.

Apart from that I can't really think of anything.

I haven't seen any of BSG or Star Trek, except commercial clips and the 2008 movie. My friends, family, and acquaintances all look at me like I just admitted I don't know who Santa is when this is brought up. I've had professors use Star Trek characters as analogues for study, and I interpolated from the descriptions which characters acted in what way, helped in part by the referential shows like Futurama and Stargate, but I still don't have a complete understanding of them. I barely know a handful of names from the entire show.

Oh so much. I didn't see Buffy until I was 16, I still haven't ever seen the Dirty Harry movies, or Dog Day Afternoon, or the Day of the Jackal. Most of my friends think I'm a movie buff, and while I do watch more movies than them, most of them aren't very good.

The funny side of it is that I managed to go through a term-long half module of Science Fiction (Literature and Film) and apart from the movies I had seen before (Blade Runner, The Matrix, Starship Troopers) I neither read nor watched anything on the reading list until after I had finished the course. I got a first in that module, 83%. English Lit at Lancaster University is a joke degree.
