While there's nothing wrong with MK, it's certainly not the "thinking person's game" Portal is, so I was a little disappointed.
Congrats. You have summed up just why I hate Portal fans.

OT: I'm getting both at some point down the road. People get hyped for different games. Get over it.

Who HASN'T!? Those guys sound like idiots, not really for not knowing about it, but from being so clearly ingnorant.
What exactly are they ignorant of? The only moronic comment they made was about graphics. I could give you a few people who know what MK is [let's face it, it is a much bigger name] and not have a clue [or give two shits about] portal.

It's all very well asking this question on an internet forum [especially this one] but go into any random console online lobbies and ask around about the two, I guarantee more people will know MK.

Pretentious-Man....AWAY!! Congratulations. You are claiming your popular game is more mature than another. What does it feel like to be the new Halo / CoD fan?

Anyway, I don't care about either, but I'd be kind of surprised if after all that ARG stuff and advertising everywhere, Portal 2 falls behind MK. I mean, MK has definitely existed longer, but I didn't think there was still so big of a fanbase for it.
No, I'm saying that a puzzle game requires more analytical thought than a fighting game. That's a pretty indisputable fact. If you want to argue that particular point, I'm going to just go ahead and assume you're trolling and ignore you for the rest of the thread.
I don't think you were quite smug enough. Be more smug please.

Portal is very niche. It's ubiquitous in the hardcore gaming community and nearly unheard of elsewhere.

this is 100% true

i would be very confident to say 98% of the people i know, have never heard of/don't care for portal, the other 2% are having such boners over the 2nd game the earth might just get thrown out of orbit.

OT: I thought the first one was fun, but i still think it's a super over glorified flash game (not that there is anything wrong with that). I just think the game gets too much credit for being better than alot of other games when like I said, it just reminds me of a really good over glorified flash game that you could find anywhere on any free game website.

Even people who never played a single video game in their lives know what Mortal Kombat is.
Portal is kind of like Tron of games - it's a classic among "nerds" but practically unknown outside of it's fanbase.

Guy: (regarding box) "Oh. Looks weird.
Uh, okay then, fair enou-

And the graphics look old."

NNNNNNNNNNNGGGHHH *aneurysm*

Okay, okay, I'm calm. Mostly.

OT: If a guy wants to buy a different game to you, hell - that's his prerogative. Look at it this way, you've less chance of getting to the counter and being turned away due to a lack of any remaining copies to sell if half the people are there for something else, right?

I don't quit see the excitement in mortal combat...just another reboot like gold and silver. However Portal 2 is exciting, including those potato games. I've always wanted to shoot guns and see living creatures in aperture(i'm talking about the killing floor room). Also they have a music game with the song the device has been modified in the potato sack too.

I went to pick up Portal 2 on my lunch break and the EBgames had a rather large line of people picking up MK.

I'm quite surprised actually and am tempted to pick up the game myself so me and my gf can do some fighting.

MK is popular, it helped create the ESRB lol.

Also it's been getting some pretty damn unexpectedly good reviews, have you checked out the gametrailers one?

The strategies of figuring out which combo to use when, the advantages of a particular character, keeping an eye on your ultra meter (or whatever they call it now), how to CHANGE your combo if something unexpected happens, what strategy your opponent is using and what weaknesses it has...there is quite a lot going on in the mind of a professional in the middle of a very fast-paced game. When you look at the network of decisions, I don't think you can automatically say it's a smaller network than that of Portal's puzzles.
It's more about being able to read movements of the other player than any of that really.
Not really. High level play in a balanced fighting game is quite similar to fencing. When proper execution has become second nature (i.e. a player can instantly do any combo or special move with almost no chance of failure due to poor input), success is awarded to the person who controls the flow of the match. This is more than simply reacting to the other player; it is, fundamentally, about forcing them down a particular path that makes them vulnerable to some strategy you have devised.

There are, in effect, three basic tiers of skill in fighting games. The first is mechanical mastery. Most players fall into this group and the player who has the most robust grasp of the command input process generally wins. The second tier occurs when players become adept at command input but have not yet delved into the larger meta game. In this case, the player that is best able to read an action on the part of the enemy and respond appropriately is generally going to win. From this third tier a player naturally grows into playing the game in the second or third intention where actions are used specifically to draw a suitable response from the other player.

Fighting games are similar to chess in this regard and indeed one can see the same basic process in chess mastery. Such a thing requires a different sort of thinking than a puzzle game of course but that does not mean it is devoid or hostile to the application of brain power.

Are you seriously comparing 2D Flash games to a 3D game that utilizes its three dimensional environment and physics to create puzzles? And you can get its brilliant narration, dark humor and environmental storytelling in any free Flash games?

You either don't know what you're talking about or you're deliberately trolling.

Now, it's entirely possible that he could've been messing with me, but I don't think he was. Here was a guy, involved enough in gaming to show up at a midnight release on a Monday night, who had never heard of the game Portal. Is it just me, or is this bizarre?

And, additionally, which game were you most excited about? Am I a starry-eyed idealist for thinking that Portal 2 is the more widely-anticipated game?[/quote]
It's not that odd for someone who doesnt follow gaming news to stay up to midnight, games like GTA IV and MW2 sold too much in their first night too have been just bought by "gamers".
