It's a good thing new people are joining.
But I think some of them, some not all, should maybe lurk a bit and learn how the Escapist rolls. No "txt-spk" for one thing, proper use of punctuation and grammar and last but not least: Spelling.
To my knowledge, a few people have done (and are doing) just that.

The idea that something has to be one thing or another has always bothered me. Very rarely are things black and white. They shouldn't be regarded as such.

Take this subject for example. While I belive that it is a very, very good thing that we're getting new users, I know that there are negative aspects that go along with it. I don't like repeat threads any more than the next guy, and I've slammed my fair share of trolls in the face, but that we have those problems means that the website is alive and well.

So, while not everything about them is something I would like to see, I know it's a very good thing.

Apologies if this seems confusing. My writing is sort of like that...

you have under 400 posts, and 3 question threads in the first page of the forum.. I think new members is relative.

We wouldn't have gems like this thread if we didn't have new members.
smartass check my profile, just because i dont have many posts doesnt mean i havent been here for awhile, so screw you and white horse you rode in on, if people really didnt like me making topics, then they wouldnt be commenting on them would they....moron.

[EDIT] you dont even have to check my profile....it says right over there <------ been here for about a year now according to that information, but it could be a lie...
...like a bisexual?
lovely :)

[EDIT]- im pretty sure that last comment had about 40% too much righteous indignation, sorry :p
That's quite alright. My prior comment was 40% confusion and 60% "That sounds funny to me right now" ^_^
Im still right about Altorin's comment being kinda dickheaded arent I?
Oh dear. I wasn't expecting to settle an internet fight. Well, you've both joined the Escapist forum May 2008, and although he joined on the 16th, 4 days doesn't make much of a difference compared to a year.

Unless of course, it's 4 days in labor. Thank goodness both of my kids were a year apart. If I had to stay in labor for 4 days...I don't want to think about it.

This is a little ironic. I joined the forum to forget I was a mom for a few minutes each day and remind myself I'm still a hip gamer. Do they still use the word "hip"? Is that still in?
for the purposes of our parle, id have to say yes, "hip" is still "in"...and i wouldnt have called that an internet fight...more of a freight train of angry...and the only reason it wasnt a fight was probably because he looked at it and realized i was right.
Let's just say you both drop this argument before I feel like *my* mother. Yes, I know Altorin made an offhand remark that you took offense to, and yes, I know you were only defending your point of view, but please don't call your brother a dickhead.

And before you say that you didn't directly call him that, and it was his comment that seemed dickheaded, I know. I just want you two to get along. So please, please, PLEASE let mommy have her vodka drink in peace!

And no, I don't really drink vodka.
u should consider it, that shit gets u drunk eh

Of course it's a good thing. You didn't really elaborate on your original post which implies you have no opinion. That you just want to say something, hide behind a bush and then watch what everyone has to say. Maybe you'll write some notes down to repeat later on. I dunno.

So I have to assume that the problem is that some of the newer posters are the one's that are responsible for stupid/duplicated posts. I'm guessing Zero Punctuation will get the blame for this again, but whatever.

There are idiots on here every month. Some stick around for a while, some don't. Some people have been signed up since way before most of us and can't manage to post more than 20 words at a time.

New people are as welcome here as any, it's fools that we don't want.

I don't like, however, yahtzee fantarts thinking this is croshaw's personal wanking ground.

Wow, I didn't realize I caused quite a little stir, I really was intentionally being a bit dickheaded, it's just how I am.. If you took real offense, then you need to reassess your priorities, but I don't think you did.. just snarked back, and that's awesome.

at least you didn't flood my inbox with messages about how awesome you are and how sucky I am, because that really gets old :p

EDIT: and for the record, I didn't respond for so long because I just didn't care enough to look, Whether you're right or wrong doesn't mean much to me, as it was a joke to begin with :p

EDIT 2: Seems you weren't as awesome as I thought. Maybe I should make a habit of posting dickheaded responses in all your threads... Nah, not worth my effort :)

I'll make it harder for me to use the Escapist to organize my cult, that's for sure.
More people on Escapist, more members you can recruit.

I think new members are good (mainly because I've been on less than a week). Gives you different opinions, and new ideas for topics to discuss.

You seem like such an innvolved mother =P
Compared to my mom at least. I'm not sure if this is what you do when your kids argue, but my mother would allways say "Just shut up and stop arguing" whenever I was arguing with one of my two brothers or two sisters. And I have to admit. I was arguing a whole lot =P

But on topic. Yes. New members are good. If new members would not have been good, I would never have been abel to find this awsome comunity, and perhaps contribute to it.
This is like The lost Forum. So please don't password protect it (Slice of cake for reference =D)

As mentioned above, there will allways be a lot of morons joining. I'd even go out on a limb to say that there would be 5 morons per every sane person joining. So you'll just have to keep your head cool , and lure out the morons =D

All in allt. New people are good, but with side affects. Just like everything else that's good =P

You seem like such an involved mother =P
Compared to my mom at least. I'm not sure if this is what you do when your kids argue, but my mother would always say "Just shut up and stop arguing" whenever I was arguing with one of my two brothers or two sisters. And I have to admit. I was arguing a whole lot =P

But on topic. Yes. New members are good. If new members would not have been good, I would never have been able to find this awesome community, and perhaps contribute to it.

I hope you don't mind, but I corrected your reply. ^_^

I have to admit I'm not always that involved, but whenever the situation arises, I always think to myself, WWMD? (What Would Mom Do?) Then I know what *not* to do. (j/k)

But all kidding aside, the trick to parenting, especially when your kids are arguing, is to make everything stop. You stop what you're doing, you stop what they're doing, and essentially you stop time in the house. This lets them know you're serious. Then I play King Solomon to their problems (an internet to anyone who got the reference), and try to see both sides of the problem. I try to let both of them know that I understand both sides of the issue, and decide on a fair decision that satisfies both parties.

This is really off-topic. I'm surprised I haven't been warned yet!

To sound like the elitist snob that I am, I feel that the level of discourse on The Escapist has declined since I joined, and I've noticed that many of the newer members aren't ardent followers of the principles of grammar.

Whu-what? You corrected .. I thought that was something people only did to annoy each other. Otherwise I honestly don't see the use in that.

You're just kidding? Well if I ever would have kids I would think to myself "What would mom do?" (Because I'm not really good at thinking acronyms - Not completely sure if it's the right word, and it's definetely not since you can't actually say it with a 'flow'-). Then I'd do the exact same. Because if you don't mind me saying - my mother did a hell of a good job raising us (I mean I can't imagine someone else being able to do such a good job with five kids).

I see, I see. That sounds like good advice indeed. And if I'd ever have children I'd try to keep that in mind. Also. Do you have enough internet for that? I mean surely everyone's heard of that story ("Of course I have, but don't call me shirley" Love that quote. Not exact, of course, but you know ... Slice of cake if you get it =D). That's super-parenting in my eyes =D Especially if you can keep it up all the time =D

I can see that you're new here let me introduce you to [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/MaxTheReaper]Max[/a] =P

In my case, I correct spelling and/or grammar just because I do the same with my kids. I'm sure your mom is wonderful like mine, which is why I said I was kidding about doing the opposite of what she would do. And as for the "Shirley" quote...Airplane!

More people is always good. The same regulars aren't going to be here forever, so there needs to be a constant influx of new blood to keep the site going. The only bad part is that new members have to be broken in, but that happens rather quickly (or they get banned and are no longer members).

Edit: Whoo, 600 posts!

New members to a forum are only not a good thing when somebody is uptight, serious, using the interweb as a vessel to prove their intelligence and so forth. New members who are witty, know how to e-mingle, fit right in, always good fun. New members who exist only to troll, good laughs to the aforementioned people who don't take internet forums seriously. New members who have no experience online or little, especially if they believe themselves to be very witty, are once again great fun.

So, generally speaking new members should be good fun, assuming you're not an overly serious twat.

It's a good thing.

My only problem is the ones that created accounts just to vote in March Mayhem because their favorite companies told them to (ahem, Turbine.) They're just here to dick with the votes and leave.

I'd say there are too many newcomers, but newcomers in general are good. It's just, when you look at the first posts of respected people who have been around a while, you'll see that almost all of them had some fanboyish or trollish tendencies. I myself started off as just another Yahtzee fanboy. The Escapist taught us how to be better than we were, by providing a warm, friendly atmosphere and intelligent community we could learn from, until we became one of them. I'm grateful to the Escapist, I would be a different person without it, and my ability to think and articulate what I think would be weaker. But that process takes time, and there are too many new members coming in, with too few of the old ones to greet them. We can't do it fast enough, and we're being flooded.

I know change isn't exactly a bad thing, but I will miss the way the Escapist used to be, because that equilibrium cannot be restored.

Seeing as I'm a new member I'm going to have to answer in the affirmative. Seeing as this forum seems to have a very effective moderating system all/most of the idiots will get weeded out anyway. Without the ability to troll/flame all they want this means that new members only bring fresh ideas and topics.
