I saw this post on the TF2 forums a bit ago and thought to bring it here, so you all know that TF2 is now free to play which leads to two main groups of players, the guys who paid for it and the guys who didn't. Recently a server plugin was released that automatically kicks any F2P player from the server as they try to join, people seem to be really against the plugin calling it "discrimination" as others really like it because it keeps servers "noob free". I was just wondering what the escapist community would think of something like this.

I'm fine with the idea. For one it keeps the game competitive for people who want to be competitive, and secondly it allows the groups of assholes to play together without bothering anyone else so that all the hate and rage against F2P players is concentrated on just a few servers instead of having a little of it everywhere.

Honestly though, are their any F2P players who would actually want to play on the servers that use this plug-in? I don't think so, so the plug-in really doesn't hurt anyone.

I think if they want any attempt to segregate, they could accomplish it much better. For instance, if they had a server tag that marked those servers, or better yet, blocked it from appearing in the master server list to F2P players, that would work out well.

The main issue to me is that I hate finding a server, joining it...and then getting kicked because of reserve slots, or being F2P...or because I didn't have enough hats, or realizing that the server was lying about its player count.

I approve of the plugin. Lately I've found the free to players insufferable. Doing incredibly stupid stuff, constantly going afk, asking to trade on non-trade servers, disgusting sprays (though I guess that's a staple online) mic spamming and just generally being a nuiscance.

Edit: Stop fecking commenting on this, I already elaborated on my feelings later on in the thread.

It's bloody stupid, that's what it is. Free to play player does not equal crappy player, just as a person who bought it will not equal greatest player alive. All it is is people being elitist pricks.

I have a slower computer and the servers that post fake players counts set me on edge, never encountered a server that kicks you because of lack of hats though.

Most of the douchebags I've had to deal with lately have been people who've had the game for years. :p There's a difference between being a newbie and a noob. One can be fixed with hours played, the other can't.

I hope that Valve will do something with it because it stands against its policy.
The fact that TF2 is F2P doesn't make th free players a lesser breed.

I think the people who pay for the servers should be able to do what they want with those servers. If that means they don't want F2P players on there that's their choice.

I highly doubt f2p players would want to be on servers full of people who don't want them anyway, don't see the problem.

I wouldn't have it on a server I run though.

Well, that thing about hats was a joke (centering around "how long" you've played the game)

I don't like this idea. The whole point of the game going free-to-play was to attract new players. And if those players start to feel discriminated against, they won't keep playing. So in effect, this plugin is acting counter to Valve's wishes.

Im an F2P player and I love the idea. Its good for people who want an experienced crowd and will help them get that. Meanwhile many less hardcore servers will not have this issue and will still be open.

This could work if it was really rare for a server.
But for people like me who got the game when it was free and have played it on the console know the basics of what is going on in each map, and it seems very unfair to Valve, as they are the ones who chose to do it in the first place.

It's not much different to having exclusive servers as a bonus for subscribing players, I don't think it is really about how '(in)experienced' different players are it's just that old subscribers are pissed off at Valve for giving away something they paid for and don't want to play with the new kids.

I'd forgotten that TF2 was free now, I might just go and try it out again (although Steam never works on my laptop for some reason =/

First of all I have no issue with f2p players. Some will be good, some will be bad. Same as new people who pay for the game. Or do you think nobody has bough a copy in the past few years since the release and only players with years of experience exist? I've bought the game nearly a year ago and have since only played for around 20 hours. I just didn't feel like playing it then. Now I'm among the first players on every map I play and routinely own players with years of experience.

Second, I'm not sure how good and reliable the system is and if it can keep out only f2p player, or if it will screw with other people. How about people with premium accounts that upgraded by buying from the steam store? Any purchase, no matter how small, automatically upgrades them.

Lastly, what about a year from now? Is there still going to be this f2p bigotry bullshit? Considering that after a week of play I'm always in the top half of players (so therefore better than most players) is the noob argument even valid?

Skill levels always vary, and the general distribution of good, average and weak players will be fairly even. That being said, I find this mod very stupid and helping to perpetuate a very stupid issue.

I don't like the idea, TF2 was not designed to be a truly competitive game. IMO the F2P is what will keep the game alive for much longer then it would have otherwise. I am sorry I am fairly new to the game. Was it ever a competitive title? I am sure there was a few pockets who took it as such.

has F2P really ruined this game at all? I know there will be alot of people who play poorly over the next few weeks as there will be more new players, but do these TF2 veterans not understand the game has a learning curve we will reach eventually?

I don't like it. This constant hate and discrimination towards noobs is only doing this medium harm.

I think there are better ways to keep games noob-free and reward players who payed for the game.

But who cares, the number of players who payed for the game will become smaller in time, so I don't think anyone's going to suffer any damage.
