I've always thought that no one outside of the country really hears about major events from Australia. But in light of the Queensland floods, the cyclones hitting the coast, the heat waves and bush fires i figured i'd ask if anyone knows about the awful luck we've had lately or any of our news in general.

Not when I'm outside, no.
Australia is too peaceful. You aren't on a brink of war like the rest of us..so no, our news tends to be much more colorful than yours.

Look on the bright side--no news is good news. You should be happy no one has to hear about your country (mainly because nothing truly that bad ever happens there).

Rarely. Once a month, maybe. Generally it's electoral or meteorological.

Lately though, we've had the worst luck with natural disasters.

I bet some of the few times people on this site outside Australia's immediate region hear about it is via Zero Punctuation.

You mean Queenslanders. In Sydney the worst thing we've had is a "heatwave", which is basically a yearly occurrence in one form or another which you have to admit is hardly something to whinge about in Australia of all places.

Huge bushfires in both Victoria (Not as bad as a couple years ago) and WA.

I live here, so yes.

Queensland is all the rage atm. I mean you guys even copied their flood disaster. Of course everyone got a bit wet.

Wait, where else is flooded?

I'm sort of from Queensland anyway (Lived there for 40% of my life, which is the longest I've spent in one state, was pretty much all in the one house too).

Yeah, but "heatwave" means something a bit different in Australia. What other countries call a heatwave, with elderly people dying of heatstroke etc, is what we in Australia call "summer". When we say there's a heatwave, the tar on the roads is bubbling and melting and you can cook without a stove by just putting your food on a piece of metal in the sun.

Only time I ever hear anything about Australia is when they cancel a game because of its subject material. They really make it seem like Australia is very anti-game. Is the cencorship that big of an issue to you natives?

Yeah
A weird weather trivia sight said:
In Australia, Marble Bar (WA) recorded maximum temperatures equaling or exceeding 37.8°C (100°F) on 161 consecutive days (between 30 October 1923 and 7 April 1924) - This remains a word heat record.
It's bloody hot here.

I love hearing people from other countries call their governments stupid. I don't feel so alone.
