okay, I'm probobly going to get my "quoted" part of my inbox flooded because of this but... erm... who or what is "Nickelback"? A band? It sounds like the name of a 5 cent whale or something.

They're kind of like the McDonalds of the music world.
But I still eat McDonalds every now and then.

I think a lot of people dislike them because they think they're not supposed to like them. I personally think that there are far worse bands out there.

Daughtry gets the same hate (though they're a bit newer and the guy in it at least had the "benefit" of being on American Idol [and going far enough, if not winning]).

I dont know. I dont hate them and i can listen to their music rather well. i would just imagine cause its cool and cause some of those people are the same that will say Rock Sux, Rap is teh best evah, and stuff like that.

...

Actually... I have the same feelings most people have to Nickelback toward Metalica. dont hate them, just Im very indifferent to them.

I clicked strongly disagree (and am, at time of writing, one of only two :V). How You Remind Me, Far Away, Savin' Me and If Everyone Cared are some of my top songs both lyrically and musically. That said, I agree that MANY of their songs are cookie-cutter with crappy lyrics and uninspiring sounds. I'd contribute the massive popularity of Rockstar (an all round terrible song but appealing to an obvious, cretinous demongraphic) to their own leap in hatred and the reason they have become so associated with shallow, boring songs. Bands are human and react the same way as anyone else. Punish them for their bad stuff and reward them for the good. If you think everything of theirs is bad and - crucially - know you do because you have listened to everything they have to offer, THEN feel free to spout hatred all over the internet. Or, my own personal suggestion, ignore them and move on.
I don't understand why people must latch onto something they DON'T like. Beiber and Black are easy examples. If I wasn't told how much they suck, I would never have known either existed. If people just ignored crappy stuff then it wouldn't go anywhere or would never bother you.

I dislike Nickelback, mainly because I hate Rockstar being blasted everywhere, and I can't stand that song. Prove me wrong if they have any decent songs, but if it's anything like Rockstar I'd rather cut myself with broken glass than listen to it...

Nickelback are bad because they have taken rock music and everything it stands for and just ruined it.
Nickelback write lacklustre lyrics with no drive, no substance and no emotion.
They have no oomph to them, they're bland and dull and lifeless.
Instrumentally, they're fine but uninteresting. They do nothing to push the boat out and make no attempts to be something special.

Nickelback are safe and, in the music industry, that is the worst thing a band can be Safe is boring, safe is lifeless and safe is wasted time and space.
In music, perhaps, but in the music industry? Being safe is a major mover of records, which is exactly what the industry wants.

Meh, they just sound like a Linkin Park ripoff to me, and nothing more. I honestly don't pay attention to them at all.

They suck up a whole bucket o' hate because they're really mediocre, and the way in which they're mediocre is an embodiment of "what's wrong with the music biz today". There are worse bands for sure, but the important thing with Nickelback is the suck-to-fame ratio.

See, worse bands than Nickelback tend not to get much airplay, because htey're just shite. Nickelback, on the other hand, are bland and inoffensive enough to get a lot of airplay on "rock" radio - so they're *fucking everywhere*.

Their music is bland, uninspired, repetitive verse chorus verse, dime a dozen crap. The lead singer has an annoying voice, and they offer me nothing new or exciting in the field of music.
Also, and perhaps worst of all, they're Canadian.

The internet hates Nickelback because a lot of people hate Nickelback. But people hated Creed before hating Nickelback was even cool. Hell, the hatedom managed to get the guy from Creed to attempt suicide. With arms wide open.

There are a lot of bands that have that Nickelback sound...so I honestly can't tell you what songs of theirs I like or dislike.

I don't have any of their music on a playlist...nor do I go out of my way to change the radio if they are playing. They effectively add nothing to music, but are not annoying enough to drive me away. So my vote goes to neutral.

They're great if you love formulaic generic no-talent alt rock, sure.

I don't hate them as much as most people, but I can certainly see how they have more letters in their name than original guitar riffs in their music. That said, I'd still rather listen to them on the radio than Beiber/Nikki Minaj/whatever.

Obviously the optimal situation is something completely different, but suffice to say I'm not going to run out of the room if someone puts on Nickelback.

I don't hate them, but I do see where the hate is coming from. Mainly, they found one song that worked, than made it over and over again. Don't get me wrong, I still like it. But I wouldn't call them a great band.

I met Chad Kroeger's father once. He lives in Edmonton, with the last name of Tourton (Or something very similar). Apparently him and his father don't get along, in many of his songs he talks about an abusive father, and in one of them I think he talks about kicking his dad's ass, or wanting too...
While I was at his home -doing tradeswork- he asked me if I liked Nickleback. I shrugged and said they weren't bad (I had been told it was his dad before-hand so didn't just trash them) He then put on a dvd of one of their concerts. I had to see that shit on a big screen and listen to it everywhere I went the whole time. It was bullshit. His dad has an entire room dedicated to this kid. Who, by the way, goes by his mother's last name I believe.
At the end of the day I wanted to punch Chad Kroeger right in the mouth. If I ever have the opportunity, I'm going to suckerpunch him and cream ' Your drunken dad says hello, little man!' I swear it. I revile Nickelback and everything they stand for, musically, spiritually, morally...If Chad Kroeger revealed he loved puppies, I would go stomp one to death and send him the video.

I don't think there would be so much hatred if their music wasn't so difficult to avoid. If they had a level of popularity such that you would only hear them every once in a while, I doubt people would have such strong emotions about them. I find them to be a pretty unremarkable band that has been lucky enough to receive what I feel to be a level of fame and riches disproportionate to the quality of their music. I've liked "Breathe", the very first single I heard on the radio by them a decade or so ago, and a few of their other songs are catchy...but at this point, I've been so saturated with their music that I would have no problem if I never heard them again.

Having said all that, I bear no ill will towards them as people, and I don't begrudge them their success at all. Evidently, their music makes a lot of people happy, although I have a hard time imagining them being anyone's favorite band (I did work with a emotionally insecure person who genuinely loved them, and I had to tread carefully to avoid hurting his feelings).

They are mediocre. To me, that is worse than actually bad. If something is bad, you can make fun of it. It sticks with you. But something mediocre is like a fart. It floats around, stinks for a while, but will be quickly forgotten.
