I think they should change it. Its true that they've built up a lot of brand name recognition with non-traditional gamers, but supposedly they're trying to tempt the "hardcore" fans back this time and the Wii's reputation with that group isn't exactly stellar.

Plus, I think they run the risk of making it seem as if the console is just an upgraded version of the Wii rather than a new product. The console's appearance is already going to do that, they might as well give it a new name and try to differentiate the two.

I think it should be renamed. Not because it's confusing or the name sounds silly, it just seems lazy to me. All they did is put an extra letter on the end of Wii! To me that looks so unimaginative and sloppy. It should have a unique name to itself.
Playstation 2,Playstation 3,Xbox 360...yup Nintendo are the lazy ones alright;)

Seriously though just like Sony and Microsoft did I can understand them wanting to keep the Wii name as it's a worldwide recognised brand now but maybe just call it "Wii 2" or something
You have to keep in mind that the Wii's success is majorly due to them finding a new market. PS2, PS3 and 360 all imply that it is a successor, Wii U implies a redesign, not unlike DS Lite or DS XL. They made the same stupid mistake with the 3DS which implies that it is just a DS with 3D functionality.
Which is why I suggested dropping the "U" part and calling it "Wii 2" which would imply that it's a successor and not just a redesign

I don't really care, Mega Game Cube, Wii U or Wii 2 it'll still be the same console. But seeing how people keept confusing the DS and the 3DS I think it would be for the best to remove the Wii bit from the name.

They should name it the Playcube Stationbox 9000: Deluxe Wii edition. Now that's an eye grabber!

Wii infinity.

It's just that much bigger than the competition!

Warning: Nintendo Wii Infinity may not be bigger than the competition.
That will prolly be phonetically collapsed to Winfinity xD.

I don't care what they rename it to, as long as people can't make fun of the name.

Side thought: when the "Wii" was announced, I thought they were either joking, or they were really unaware. When the "Wii u" was announced, I knew that they were completely aware and just joking around, having fun.

You mean to tell me that Nintendo didn't notice until recently what they'd done? These names were an accident?

Nintendo GameBoard, anyone?

In all seriousness, "Wii U" is fine. They just need to do something to set the console apart from its last-generation competitors, as current impressions put it in the same power territory as the existing consoles, making it a less than attractive prospect for next-next-generation gamers.

In short yes.

In long, I don't understand the reasoning for the "U" in the first place. The wii was originally named as such as to say "We" as in "we play together". Is there a reason for the "U" other than to mark it as a new model?

Yeah, its a stupid name and since it's not even released yet they could change it now with no hassle.

I don't think it really matters. I'm pretty ambivalent about the name so it could go either way for me.
Since they haven't started marketing it yet I doubt it will hurt their sales much either way. Although they might want to keep "Wii" in the name somewhere so they can draw in some of the customers of the original Wii.

There's something to be said about brand recognition. I wholeheartedly believe that if Sony had renamed every console after Playstation something different they wouldn't have sold as well. Microsoft has stuck by the name Xbox for two consoles now and based on rumors and early reports the next console will keep the Xbox name.

I wouldn't mind seeing it renamed, but still keeping the Wii brand on it. They'll still have to hard sell the technology and power of it to "hardcore gamers" (I hate that term btw) but newer gamers who might not know a lot about the video game industry won't be confused when all of a sudden a new Nintendo console on the shelves.

The tech needs to appeal to "hardcore gamers", the name and the branding need to appeal to "casual gamers"

I was just explaining why ''lazy'' is probably the wrong term to use. Sure, it's ''lazy'' to just slap a 2 or 3 on there, but it's just plain stupid to slap a U on it. Also, adding a 2 at this point also might not be the best idea. Do you realize why the 360 is named 360 in contrast to 2? They didn't want the 360 to appear inferior to the inevitable PS3 by naming it Xbox 2. Not only would Wii 2 be the same mistake, it's rather likely that the others will be using, at minimum a 4. I also don't consider it unlikely for Microsoft to call it's next console the 720, as in another full circle.

In other words, Wii 2 probably wouldn't be much better then Wii U.
Just to clarify when I said lazy I was just gently poking fun at the chap who earlier said it was "lazy" to slap an extra letter on the name by reminding him that that's exactly what Sony and Microsoft have done and yet no one accused them of laziness

As for Wii 2 that was just a suggestion. They can call it the "Wii1080SuperMegaHappyFunTimeMachine" for all I care.I was making the point that brand recognition is important and, like it or hate it,with "Wii" Nintendo have a very successful worldwide recognised brand name and they would be foolish to drop it

As for the rest of your post I get it you hope it fails. That's your opinion and you're entitled to it.Personally I hope it doesn't

The string of puns they made leading up to it's announcement at E3 was awful. The name should be changed. I liked Project Café much better as a name
