I played every race in the end, but I started off as a Human female Noble. Was an awesome play through and really got me hooked.

When I had it for the PS3, I was mainly an Elven Rouge Male (who planned to go 'adventuring' with Zevrahn). Now playing on the 360 (got the Ultimate Ed) as a Dwarven Male Rogue who's been diddling Leliana. I have really come to love those little Dwarves and it's all Varric's fault...and Oghren too. I have a Human, Female Rouge in the wings but I may skip her for a while and play as a something, Male, Mage since I seem to always neglect the magisters.

I played every origin story before creating my "final" first character, and chose to be a male City Elf. That origin story is by far the best in the game. Never actually finished it, though. Still can't beat the stupid overpowered archdemon lieutenants in Denerim.

DA:O Male Dwarf Noble Rogue. I'll probably play through the other origins at some point.

As for DA2, I'm totally fine with being a human only. Why? Because we are playing the story of Hawke, who is a human from Lothering. So it's all fine by me. Note: I play and GM tabletop RPGs all the time, and have for years. Often times the GM will place limits on character creation, examples:

1) Only Vampires in this World of Darkness Game...or even, only Camarilla Vampires.
2) This will be an Evil D&D game, so only Evil aligned characters.
3) This is an all-Kobold campaign.
4) Everyone has to be some sort of private detective in this game.
5) In this Star Wars game, everyone has to be someone who lives on Tatooine.

or whatever.

It happens all the time at tabletop. As a matter of fact, it happens all the time in CRPGs, too. In Deus Ex, you were playing as JC Denton...you didn't have complete freedom. Like in DA2.

So, no big deal for me.

Well I tried the different characters never tried the dwarf but I really should go back and try, anyway after seeing the elf revamp I really wanted to be an elf in DA2 but sadly I can't. =(

On the upside though I wouldn't have to hear the scottish voice every second of every play session. o_O

I played all of the of the races to gain a better perspective into the game, but was kind of diasappointed i couldn't be a Quanari and it was only proved further in their ramp up in DA2. The idea of their beliefs and society are so much cooler than every mage crying like a little *****.

I WANT TO BE QUANARI SO BAD!

out of DA:O i found that being a dalish rogue was the one i enjoyed most.

P.S. did i play the game wrong when i got the Morrigan romance off both a dwarf warrior and a city elf mage?
I think she was referring to the fact that you have to be male to romance Morrigan. Also, you can't be a city elf mage...
true and woops i didnt mean mage i meant warrior, i was still thinking about how much i hated mages in DA:O. thanks for spotting my mistake

I played a Human Female Noble, a Human Male Mage, a Dwarf Male Commoner and a Elf Male Dalish...

And my favorite was the Human Female Noble... I'm a guy but I like when I can roleplay a character (like a girl) without making me feel like a weirdo.

.....Got ya! Actually, despite all the negativity on the boards about Dragon Age II, I am still saving up to buy it....after WonderCon and a lovely holiday trip....and don't really care if people give me said negative vibes about it. I'm terrible at DA: Origins, having lost to the final Archdemon twice. I'm currently getting some basic info, surprisingly from all the negative information, the stuff that should have been obvious to me but now I'm starting to figure out the strategy of DA: O that's made it so much easier.

But, regardless, my only major irritation is that you no longer have the ability to be elf, or in my case, Dwarf. I love playing a Dwarf, mostly as a Rogue for their backstabbing technique, and currently about ready to play a Female Dwarf Warrior to see what I missed out there.

Still, lead me to curiosity, when playing DA: O were any of you interested in playing ONLY one race? Or favored one race over the other? If so, what race was it? If you wanted to make a character in DAII, would you rather have him/her non-human?
Was elf and bit pissed initially I couldn't be in DA2. Though I gotta say, I dig the looks of the second default female Hawke. Sadly, not too thrilled with the game, still haven't finished it, though that could have something to do with AC: Brotherhood falling into my lap and me getting my murder back on :D (but even now that I finished it, I'm still not feeling the DA2 vibe pulling me back :< )

Oh and as for Origins. The trick's to play a Mage. And grab 2 more Mages. And a Warrior, just in case you come across anything big that needs to be tanked (I used Alistair cause I believe in the good old sword&board tanking, but I tried Stan a few times and it worked fine as well). But yeah, Mage powah all the way. AoE the shit out of 85% of the game and you've still got healing and a good deal of both single target and CC for when the big stuff comes along.

Honestly, once you get the few basic spells you'll need across the characters, anything's de facto dead. I went with a DPS [moi], hybrid [Morrigan] and healer [Wynne] setup, but the most important thing is the AoE. Wynne hits them with Earthquake to keep them in place (no cast time = major plus) and after that Morrigan nukes/slows them with Blizzard and I add Tempest to the mix. Use correct positioning (read, doors/narrow passages) and it's so long whatever the hell they throw at you. Actually, I spent most of my time in Origins telling Alistair to stay the fuck back so he wouldn't run into a pile of AoE like the moron he is.

I played through it as:

Male dwarf noble warrior, a male human mage, a female Dalish elf rogue, a male elf mage, a male city elf rogue, and a male human mage

I like Mages

The original character I made and beat the ArchDemon with was an Elf tower Mage.

If you're having problems with the Archdemon, don't forget that you can call on your armies, and use the Balistas. Melee people get hosed the fastest and easiest against the Archdemon.

Personally I almost always chose to play as an elf. In Origins I saw most of the humans as dicks that I didn't want to associate with and Dwaves as... just not quite what they should be, can't really explain it. I love how elves work in Thedas, either living as they did in ancestral times or as second class citizens. I think I got this from the Origin Stories, in the Dalish/City Elf origins almost all the other characters acted as if they knew the warden, and were even portrayed as friends to him/her. In the Dwarf origins you get betrayed by your brother and exiled from the city or are forced into a life of crime for the sake of you family it's just a little too dark for me I guess. Then with the human noble your family's friend screws you over, kills your parents and almost takes you out with them. I also enjoyed the Magi origin, as all the apprentices of the tower seem to be somewhat friendly towards each other, the mages prison didn't feel like that, more of a home; a really sweet home that has powerful ancient artifacts to boot.

First full playthrough - Elf Mage.
2nd full playthrough - Dalish Elf Archer.
3rd full playthrough - City Elf rouge with a focus on stealth.

(I actually enjoyed playing mage the most... going to have to play through it again now....)

huh, no love for dwarven females, too bad
I can't think of a single game that's had plenty of people playing dwarven female... almost sad really.

I "Serioused" (All DLC) 2 human nobles.
I played though origins with about 3 human nobles, 2 dalish and 1 city elf and 1 of each dwarf.

I preferred to be a male city elf, that's purely because that was my favourite origins story though.

in Origins I first played with a Dwarf male, didn't like the two-handed weapon system really, and switched to a dual-wielding Male Rogue, which is basically always my first choice anywhere, playing quite far. Then I had a long break with traveling around the country with work and wanted to make a new character, once I got back to the game: male warrior. One-handed weapon & shield at that. Got up to the Landmeeting, lost, was frustrated that I had to go through the long dialogue again, took a couple times to remember to get the dialogue choices right because at the first time it didn't go perfectly but just how I wanted, lost again with another character and then the game crashed a couple times or I just didn't feel like playing it at that time. And that's as far as I've got. It took me about 40 hours just to get on the Landsmeet.

I've always chosen male characters, if I have the chance, because I can relate a lot better. In Dragon Age 2 though, I absolutely disliked the look of the male Hawke, and the sound of him. So I chose the female Hawke, to break my tradition, and because I liked her voice and especially how the default female Hawke looked. I also happen to know a cute, funny girl with much more greater personality, who looks very much like the default character.

Even if I had the choice of having my character in DA2 to be elf/dwarf, I probably wouldn't. Perhaps an elf if I'd get him/her to look to my liking, but the lack of choices does not bother me in the least bit.
Using 40 hours to get to the Landsmeet isn't bad, the full game is meant to be about 50 hours long and the Landsmeet is pretty much one of the final chapters. I won't say more than that.
