PS: the only relevant point is people START smoking out of peer pressure but it only continues because of nicotine's addictive properties.
Exactly why people start verbally abusing others - they care about their "image". A lot of people just start enjoying it more and more after that.

Well, a lot of people have contributed to making trolling and harassment a problem. As I once ranted about in a thread I made, there are consequences to these behaviors, and now the gaming community risks suffering because of the actions of a few wastes of humanity.

So I think it's a good thing this is finally getting attention. Maybe now our online gaming services will start looking into REAL ways to keep these defective individuals away from our games.

Games are for gamers. Trolls should be evicted from their homes and put under bridges where they belong.

Answer to online racism, harassment, bigotry, etc.:

make people accountable for what they say. Of course that requires you give up your anonymity.

Pick your poison.
No there is a better option. We pull up our big boy/girl pants and use the tools we already have. Instead of going online to your blog or twitter or whatever you kids use these days to whine about the big bad bully who made you cry you use the damned mute button. You want to know why this keeps happening? Because we allow it to. Each and every one of us allows this behaviour to happen because instead of punishing them we encourage them. We let them win every damned day by posting articles like the one listed. They want a reaction. That is the reason they do it. And what do we do? WE REACT!!!!

Now what if instead of reacting each individual used the tools they are provided. Playin COD and someone calls you the N word? Mute him or her. Now what if everyone he or she did that too did that? It would become a very lonely place for them would it not? Who would they have left to talk to? Other assholes is who. There would be a wall. A division of communities and that is what we need. Let the trolls troll each other and leave the rest of us in peace.

So why is this so damned complicated?
