If you're looking for one or the other, just choose based on guns vs. magic/swords. Or fantasy vs. sci fi.
They're similar enough to where it won't matter.

Specific differences that stand out:
Fallout has more interesting (and simpler/easier/better) leveling with perks and experience.
Oblivion has more quests and questlines that are far more interesting than anything in Fallout (the Dark Brotherhood quests, Shivering Isles which comes in the GotY edition). While Fallout has more detailed quests, longer and more options to complete.
Ummm. There was more but my monorail of thought (yes, it's a monorail, I'm a modern kind of guy) totally jumped the tracks. xD

Personally, I prefer Oblivion (Shivering Isles is the best Bethesda game I've ever played all by itself). But I can recognize that Fallout 3 did a lot of stuff better than Oblivion (leveling, random events, graphics, fighting mechanics).

NOTE: I also don't have any opinion on the PS3 version, because I have only played these games on 360 and PC.

Fallout 3 is a much more polished product than Oblivion. The people are designed better, the landscapes, although repetitive, are arguably more varied than in oblivion, and the dialouge system is far more intricate in that every response you choose in NPC conversation is done in entire sentences, usually either agressive, neutral, kind, or downright dickishly cynical. This results in small differences in how the NPCs respond, and greatly helps immersion in my opinion. It's also a lot less glitchy, and generally feels more refined as a product, as they've had time to improve since Oblivion's release.

Oblivion, on the other hand, handles almost all of it's NPC conversations through you choosing a single topic and listening to their harangue about it. You'll end up hearing the same things verbatim from a lot of the same characters. However, Oblivion has far more NPCs than fallout, being that it takes place in a setting where most of the human race HASN'T been wiped from the face of the earth.

Oblivion has better character customization in the way of skills and equipment. Fallouts wardrobe is mostly for aestetic and defensive purposes, with the occaisional stat boost, whereas Oblivion has a multitude of different enchantments available to customize your character. Anything from walking on water to partial invisibility, night vision and life detection combos ala THE PREDATOR, etc..

Fallout 3 compensates for this with it's perk system that lets you choose a new trait or ability upon each level up, like cannibalizing dead bodies for health, extra blood splatter and dismemberment on your targets, and the ability to take body parts from your victims and sell them for bounties, among others.

CASE IN POINT: Fallout 3 is a much better product, as it's less glitchy and it's layouts are less cumbersome than Oblivion, but Oblivion lets you build a more specific character than Fallout would. Ninjas, Barbarians, Wizards, etc. In Fallout you can either be a saint who shoots at people or a total dick who shoots at people.

Depends.

I like the leveling and level scaling in Oblivion a lot and the magic system. If Fallout had the same scaling and leveling system, I'd probably like it better.

Alright, so Skyrim is on the horizon. I'm excited for it, but not well-versed in RPGs. Which game is better/more fun, Oblivion or Fallout 3? Note, I have a PS3.

To generalize, which do YOU like best?
I prefer oblivion, but that's just because I prefer the sword and sorcery style RPG genre over the futuristic style of fallout(don't like guns in my RPGs). That said, if you're trying to gear up for skyrim, go with oblivion. After all, skyrim is much more closely related to oblivion than to fallout.

Wait, do you mean which series is better? Because if so, Oblivion has Morrowind on it's side so it's an automatic win. If not... hm... I think Fallout is better. Mainly because I like the whole 'choose to side with the NCR and it's a completely different game than siding with Caesar' thing. I also like the combat better in Fallout. In Oblivion I just crouched in the shadows all the time and killed everyone in one shot with an arrow. I felt awesome, but not challenged xD Maybe I just forgot to turn the difficulty up but still

depends on if you wold rather run around in a bright and colorful fanasy rpg or a brown and gritty post-apocalyptic fps rpg. i feel the story and characters are more involved in fallout and the vats system is nice, but i think magic, sowrds and shields are cool so I prefer oblivion.

Fallout is just oblivion but better the designer saw what they done right and what they done wrong and improved it that's why I really want to see what the new fallout in the same engine as skyrim is going to be like.

Eh. Same games, just different texture packs. Now if Bethesda ever gets a new engine...

I think Fallout 3's levelling system makes more sense so I'm going to go for that although I do love oblivion despite its flaws.

This is going to sound stupid, but I liked Fallout better just because I hate, HATE fantasy settings (when not handled by Peter Jackson, mind you)

Nothing pulls me out of a game more than casting magical spells at imps, goblins or what-have-you. Yes Fallout 3 still has quirky enemies like that, but I guess I can take it because it has guns. However, I will give Oblivion and the soon to be Skyrim this: They're the only fantasy RPG's I actually liked.

This.

I may be biased, I played Fallout 3 first, but I just couldn't get into Oblivion as much as I got into FO3 and I also found it less polished, a bit more confusing and the NPCs were really, really unlikeable to me. Also the leveling system in FO3 was so much better.

Also I love Sniper Rifle's, what can I say.

if you have it on PC, then oblivion is by far the better choice because of the mods. every single reservation any one has against oblivion can be (and probably already has) been solved through mods for the game.

if you're getting it for console, then Fallout 3 is the better choice because it is a better stand up game with out mods.

Morrowind > Fallout > Oblivion
So If you mean Elder Scrolls I'd go for them, but I think nearly every other Bethesda game is better than Oblivion. Daggerfall was also very good...

I'm actually playing Oblivion right now and, even though I found it to be the most addictive game ever when it first came out, I was definitely more blown away and sucked in by Fallout 3, that game is so very near perfect. New Vegas, on the other hand, was a very big letdown
