Poll: Ocarina of Time... Overrated?!

Yeah, I think it's overrated, but what does that mean? It's rated so highly, that even if people though it just a little worse, it would still be highly rated. I'm not saying that It was bad, or even mediocre, in fact, I think it's great. But people tend to make it seem like more than it was, which was a damn good game.
Certainly not. It's one of the few games that managed to exceed all expectations, and when they were so high to begin with, that's no mean feat.
Where to start with it? At the time, astonishing graphics, perfect controls, a stunning amount of depth, near-flawless level design, creative enemies and a masterfully told, epic storyline with one of the most darkly emotional endings in gaming history. And more. It was, and still is, a real experience and joy to play for me. I don't care that it's 12 years old, it still stands up today as the finest gaming has to offer. I'm serious, I played through it again a few months back trying to look for flaws, disbelieveing that a game could stand up this long. I couldn't find any that substantially detracted from the game, and believe me this was no case of nostalgic rose-tinting. Games I loved from that era, such as the Banjo games, have long since aged but OoT still stands tall.
Fanwankery all this may be, but if any game deserves it, it is OoT. Truly a masterpiece.

I also was afraid of the rolling boulder you had to run past to get the dagger. Which shows how old I was when I first played it...
Best final boss fight ever. Probably because of the effects and final death sequence, which reduced frame rate to about 5 fps... (And people could still play it...)

I dont really know if Super Mario 64 had any impact whatsoever on 3D gaming but I think that overall if OoT is still popular today, it should earn that spot.
Oh, I would not give it a 10/10 because I love the game but it just doesnt scream "PERFECT" to me.

i liked it okay but i had a friend that said it was the best game ever and i wasn't impressed. don't get me wrong it's a good game but i don't think it deserves quite as much of a rating as it has.
I don't think it's overrated in the least bit. It's about as close to perfect as any game has come, and it's my number one of all time. That argument about Mario 64 pushing games into 3D doesn't make any sense - just because Mario 64 did that first doesn't stop Ocarina of Time from being an amazing game.
It did indeed, with a fully free, dynamic camera, full analogue movement and basically invented the free-roaming platformer that we know today. It proved 3D could not only be done well, but done masterfully, with total freedom to do what you want in massive worlds that had simply never been seen before.ReinofFire said:

Now, if one goes beyond rating quality and looks at how much of an influence it has been on the industry as a whole, the yes, it is definitely possible as what you are seeking is quantifiable.
Take other games such as Grand Theft Auto 3 or God of War that other games are called clones of. Did they really do anything new? Not even a single novel idea there. They did, however, present old ideas and mechanics in a cohesive package unlike any before...save for The Ocarina of Time.
Did The Ocarina of Time do more than compile and refine? It bought in the whole 'Z-targeting' toggle feature which made 3-D combat work as well as 2-D combat had up until that point.
It introduced complex 3-D puzzles that relied on something other than pushing boxes or platforming (as Tomb Raider bought to the action-adventure genre). It had catchy, memorable iconic tunes, though some were remixed from the 2-D series. It was the first game of its type to deal with time travel and manipulating objects across time. That's just for starters. Would have another game of its type done these things if OoT didn't do them first? Probably, but most likely not all at once or in the same way.
Influence aside, it all depends upon which rating was given to The Ocarina of Time.

I didn't vote in the poll, as I can't actually say, and I didn't say 'yes it is overrated' because (wait for it now) I HAVEN'T PLAYED IT, SO I CAN'T SAY. WHICH I SAID. AT THE START.
My opinion would be invalid, had I given one.
I called it a prediction of my own opinion. I then based said prediction on the "evidence" (quotes because its opinion) that the other Zelda (and Mario, as an added bonus) games are given reviews yet I fail to find anything in the slightest bit interesting when I play them.
Given this, I said that if I had of played the game (which I haven't) then, judging from past experiences and that the games follow a certain style/criteria/whatever, I would probably find the game overrated.

Probably because, I can't know for sure.
Because I haven't played it.

The praise it gets is a bit outrageous, but otherwise it is and always will be no matter what you say, a good game.

The first time I played Ocarina of time I hadn't experienced anything like it before, so it always holds a special place in my heart. If you go back and play it it's not that great compared to today's standards, but you have to judge it based on when it released.
The praise Citizen Kane gets isn't because it's going to be the best movie ever forever, but because given the time it was released it was a magnificent advancement in film making.
