So, i've been reading these forums for awhile but never really made an account but i've never really seen anything on this wonderful place known as Oddworld in the gaming universe.

For those of you that don't know, and I hope more of you do than don't considering it isn't a largely known franchise, Oddworld was a place made by Oddworld Inhabitants in 1997 when they released one of their most famous titles, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. It was a hit game that followed the story of the protagonist (Abe) through a meat processing plant known as Rupture Farms and into the world of Oddworld Via Scrabania (Home of the Scrabs) and Paramonia (Home of the Paramites.) The Oddworld Games also used a system known as 'GameSpeak' in which the player would communicate with the people of Oddworld through voice actions AKA 'Hello', 'Follow Me', 'Work' and so on.

The game was based around you leading Abe through these hostile environments to shut down Rupture Farms (due to the Glukkon (Race) Mullok attempting to use your friends as food) and free your Mudukon friends (same race as Abe.) As Abe had no real weapons except Possession, it was an extremely tough and punishing, yet, rewarding game that tested players to the max and was one of the games that introduced the 'Unlimited Lives' system into the gaming world.

Needless to say, the dark, violent and humourous world led to the 'expansion' Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus (1998). Considering the games were supposed to be in a Quintoligy, the follow up to Abe's Oddysee wasn't part of the Quintoligy, but it continued the adventures of Abe.

Abe's Exoddus once again followed Abe, but after he escaped and shut down Rupture farms, he fell onto his head and had a vision that the Mudukon spirits' bones were being used by the Glukkons to make Soulstorm Brew! So once again he set out to the mines of Necrum to shut down the Brewery with some close friends.

After they arrived at the Mines, Abe's friends drank some brew and became addicted to it so, to continue Abe's quest, he had to enter two Muduokon vaults (protected by Scrabs and Paramites) of Mudukon dead to get the power to make his friends well again. Needless to say, after he healed them up and arrived at the Conduit to the vault he had to possess the three major Glukkons to enter the Brewery and after many hardships, he destroyed the Brewery, saved his friends and returned home with the warning that there were still Mudukon slaves out there.

Next they Introduced Munch in Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee that was a Gabbit who was believed to be the last of his kind chasing a tin of Gabbier Eggs which sadly landed him in the Vykkers Labs. After many challenges, Abe returned and rescued Munch and his Fuzzles from the Labs resulting in an idiot Glukkon becoming the 'GlukkStar' and the Labs being closed down. This was possibly the worst in the Quintoligy due to the transaction from 2D to 3D.

Next came Oddworld: Strangers Wrath, which followed a stranger through an entirely new environment in Oddworld far to the West. This game introduced 'Live Ammunition' literally inwhich you hunted down your ammunition to be used to catch bandits and bounties. This game was the third in the Quintoligy and it was far more successful than Munch.

After these games were released and the next project 'Oddworld: Squeeks Oddysee was cancelled by lack of funding, Oddworld Inhabitants decided it was time to go silent and pursue other projects in the film and music industries. They left many titles cancelled such as:

Sligstorm - This was an idea by Oddworld Inhabitants which would have a minitaure quest between Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus which would follow an Albino Slig through his Birthplace in which people that were different were subject to violence and death by the Slig Queen. Sadly, this Project like so many were cancelled.

The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot - An idea still held close to the makers of Oddworld Inhabitants which followed the protagonist Fangus through his hardships of life where he is bitten by a Rabbid felon. The game follows his story as he slowly succumbs to his illness and his quest to defeat the Mafia that did it do him.

Hand of Odd - This was scheduled to be an RTS similar to KKND in which you would either pick the Land Grabbers (Glukkons, Sligs and Slaves) to steal and put the land to production or the Tree Huggers (Native's, Wildlife and spirits) to save the land and keep it free. The idea was good but sadly, nothing came from it.

Munch's Exoddus, Strangers Exoddus and so on - Not the proper names, but it was planned to have more quests for these protagonists rather that just the orinigal story.

Now after so long, OWI returned with 'Just Add Water' to bring Munch's Oddysee and Strangers Wrath FINALLY to the PC platform on December 21st 2010 in the form of the Oddboxx and they promise to deliver hidden titles in the not so distant future.

I know this was a long read but I just want to spread the light of Oddworld to the people that could miss these great games. Get on Steam if you have it and purchase the first 2 titles and aid these developers to create something special. I may add Images of the races to help new-comers to be familiar to what Sligs, Mudokons, Scrabs and so on are :)

I loved odessey and exodus, they were brilliant. However, Munch was a big steaming pile of crap. I hated it, I don't think they converted to 3d platform games that well.

I played Abe's Oddesey and Munch's Oddesey. I didn't get very far in either though.

Abe's Oddesey was a great game and I liked it a lot. I have a copy of the PC version somewhere and now i'm getting tempted to play it.

Munch's Oddesey... well... just wasn't the same really. It didn't have the platform style that Abe's oddesey had. I liked the different approach to it compared to, say, super mario bros.

Also, munch on land was annoying, munch on his wheelchair is annoying... and hell, even munch SWIMMING was annoying. Everything just felt like it was in fast-forward in that game except munch on land.

No, I agree with you all about Munch. The idea was good, the transition to 3D was poor HOWEVER I feel Stranger is an entirely different story. It runs well on 3D and the Game is an excellent experience.

I've played and completed both the Abe games, though not with all mudokkens saved (I walked into some rooms, saw the challenges, then walked right out thinking fuck that!). I have and have tried to play Munches Oddysee as I got it for 50p but I only have an Xbox 360 and the backwards compatibility for it is terrible, it lags and there are no sounds at all. Never played Strangers Wrath because it never really appealed to me. I'm sure its a good game, just not like the Oddworld games that I loved.

I've played both of the Abe games. After that, they decided to develop only for Microsoft and I never bothered to look into the next ones. Games like that should be multi-system.

I've only ever played the first game on PC at a friend's years ago. I don't remember much about it. Always had a passing interest in the Oddworld series, though; Abe's character design in particular just tickles my visual cortex. Oo-er matron. ;-)
