So I was asked to write a sonnet for English class. Not feeling inspiration to write something ordinary, I instead chose to write something... extraordinary.
(/pretentiousness)

Anyways, I had fun writing it, and I wanted to see if others would have fun reading it. So, reprinted here for your reading pleasure, is my Ode to a Small Green Mass the Captain Threw at Me upon Its Finding Beneath the Decks.

O, yonder green mass that struck me oblique,
Your small size belies personality
That enchants me, like a delightful creek
That beyond large violet mountains I see.

You are to me my muse, my maiden est
A small projectile which my captain scorn
Enough to throw upon my surprised chest,
But lo and behold, my love was then born.

Alike a green aardvark, she look.
You mass, you squeal like an annoyed badger.
My shipmates were afear'd when you I took,
But you are just too precious to inter.

And when you go to your contented bed,
The button captain's press'd, and now you're dead.

I have no idea what to say... was the mass alive? And the narrator loves the (possibly female) green mass?

I can never look at Play-Doh the same way again

I like the creativity and the subject matter...it's not often you see an ode to small green masses. As for it being an actual sonnet, though, well...it's definitely not Petrarchan, and from the rhyme scheme, it looks like you might have been aiming for a Shakespearean kind of thing. The meter's all over the place, though--it's not always pentameter, and it's only fully iambic if you really push the stresses on some words way out of place.

Never before was a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy homage so skillfully written for an English class.

I salute you.

I think your class needs petunias, and a towel.

That's what I get for thinking of Vogon poetry before I write... I wonder if my teacher will pick up on it. After drawing a sketch that looks suspiciously like Trogdor for Biology, I wonder what the teachers are saying about me.

It was Shakespearian. The stresses are way out of place, but I don't care, and I doubt my teacher will. As far as the meter, though, I'm pretty sure it doesn't stray from pentameter. Where does it? I want to fix it before I turn it in.

Well, let's see. As a fan of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as well as a fan of amusing things in general, I loved it.

As a poetry-obsessed gal... well... meh. What was the assignment? I'm guessing from the style and word usage you were aiming for an Elizabethan (a.k.a. Shakespearean) sonnet: in which case, the stresses and meter seemed off.

Oh gooey green mass made of... green
why the crewmen would find you obscene
when in love we made out
one of them freaked me out
Said "it's planting an alien within"

Quite a few of the lines, actually, even if you allow for forcing the stresses out of place. Lines like "Alike a green aardvark, she look", for instance--it's iambic if you stress the "vark", but only has four beats in it.

Woops, thanks. I had another beat written down, just forgot to type it.
