Lemme be that one guy and Say my order is..
Return
Towers
Fellowship
I just Really like Return love the epic battles, the dramatic speeches(know the Aragorn at the Black Gate Speech by heart), really liked how they did the massacre at Osgiliath the end stretched too long but all in all sticks out as my favorite.

I have to go with Return of the King, mainly because Faramir is my favorite character and I don't think he appears until that movie.

He first appears in The Two Towers.

Fuck you

Is the battle at Osgiliath in Return of the Kings at least?

Despite being "fucked" (apparently), the Osgiliath battle is technically first seen in The Two Towers (i.e. the orcs have taken the eastern shore), but the on-screen battle takes place in Return (orcs crossing by rafts and whatnot).

Fellowship

Out of all three it felt the most like an adventure as opposed to a war movie. It didn't feel strung together by battle sequences. Great battle sequences with proper emotional investment, but just battle sequences nonetheless. Also no jumping back and forth inbetween the three seperate narratives of Frodo/Sam/Gollum, Aragorn/Legolas/Gimli, and Merry/Pippin.

Fellowship, it introduces characters, the world, and the story perfectly. I don't think I can hold a single thing against it.

That being said, my favourite moment of the whole trilogy is by far Theoden's speech and charge in The Return of the King, it always gives me shivers.

For me it's probably Two Towers. It had more combined moments of enjoyment of all of them, though I find all 3 to have great moments.

But the defense of Helm's Deep was probably the peak of it for me. Gimli and Legolas' banter and friendship, the calling of the order to ride out by Gimli on that horn. And I'm sure there are other bits too, I just can't recall them. It's been like 10 years since I saw those movies, so they are pretty fuzzy in my memory.

My vote goes for the Fellowship. The story has just begun, it feels rather small, before kingdoms start to come into the play and it nicely changes scenery.

Fellowship.

It was the best in setting the mood and presenting the characters. It was the closest to the books by focusing on a journey of a handful of characters instead of making it about the war. It also didn't had the need to bolster battle scenes that took 20 pages in the books to one half of the movie.

Disclaimer: Even after two attempts, I have never actually made it through the books. That being said, I have read enough to conclude that I just don't like them, mostly because of Tolkien's writing style.

OT: For me, it's a tie between The Two Towers and Return of the King. (Extended editions, of course.) I love Fellowship to death, but for me it loses a bit too much steam after Moria.

Love them all, but my favorite is The Fellowship of the Ring (from someone that hasn't read the books, if that matters).
Really didn't expect RotK to get by far the least votes by the way. It usually wins these kind of polls, and it's got the highest rating on IMDb and Metacritic.

My favorite is The Fellowship of the Ring. It feels more in line with the books than the rest of the movies, sticking to the Hobbits' POV for the most part and balancing the action & adventure nicely. It's also the movie with the heavier pathos, what with Gandalf's and Boromir's demise, Merrin and Pippin's capture and the rest of the fellowship disbanding for good.

Two Towers tries and fails to replicate that kind of heavy-hearted feel by pretending to kill Aragorn halfway through (even if you didn't read to book, did you really buy it?) and then pretending like Haldir's death (the guy you met 5 minutes before and isn't even there in the book) is the worst thing ever. Return of the King fares better in this regard.

Mind, Helm's Deep and the siege of Gondor are amazing.

Fellowship because there was no greater Crowning Moment of Awesome than Gandolf facing off against the Balrog.

Please keep in mind that the Balrog was the one and only enemy that scared Legolas the 1200 year old elven prince.

I don't think it's trying to sell Haldir's death as particuarly tragic, Haldir is just the 'face' of the death of the elves. It's why I feel the presence of the elves works in the film. In addition to the eye candy that the elves provide (in that we see how 'kewl' they are in bowplay), it's the 'passing of the elves' conveyed as a microcosm, and Haldir's last moments encapsulate it. The elves are past their time. The elves can't stand before the power Saruman has created, let alone Sauron. The very design of their armour, and how it contrasts with the Noldor at the start of Fellowship, even adds to this. So, it's not so much that Haldir's death is tragic, it's that it's symbolic of how the war will play out from here, that it will be Men who decide the fate of Middle-earth, not the elves, whose time has ended.

Fellowship, hands down... and I'd be lying if I claimed it's for any reason other than it being the one in which Jackson took the least liberties with the book.

Yeah, I'm a purist.

Yes there are cg effects in Fellowship, but not to the extent of the other two.. that's all I meant. They didn't have the means when the first was filmed and had to use it more sparingly.
The entire 12-hour trilogy was filled as a single project between 1998 and 2001. And as with all single projects, the CGI was done entirely after filming. At no point was CGI used when it wasn't needed, unless you want to count the option of looking like ass. (Case in point, any Gollum cosplay.)
That's not really the point I was making.. I just said Fellowship used it the least.
