So I want to know do you think ANY professional player of a game ,whether in sports or esports respectfully, should have to talk to the media or be fined?

I ask this after hearing once again that Marshawn Lynch may once again be fined over 50k for not talking to the press after a game, which to me sounds like colossal bullshit as the man while very intelligent is not very articulate in the way he speaks and that's ok.
I mean seriously there are other players on his team more then happy to talk to the media why are they trying so hard to get this one man to talk when he clearly doesn't want to?

Fill me in here. Who is fining him? And are we talking about actual fines or pay cuts?

the NFL is fining him and its an actual fine. BTW this is not in response to his crouch grab fine which I honestly think was him just adjusting his cup but hey at least that makes sense.

Well, in that case I say the fine ought to be at least reduced significantl. His job is to play to the best of his ability.

The thing about Marshawn Lynch and his dealings with the media is this: NFL players are required by contract to speak with the media. From this news story on KOMO <a href=http://www.komonews.com/sports/NFL-fines-Lynch-50000-for-not-speaking-to-media-283242341.html>Link

"The league's media policy mandates that players must be available during the week and in the locker room following all games."

While it sounds ridiculous that he'd get fined for remaining silent, it is part of his contract that he's to make himself available.

Yeah, this whole thing is required by contract, but the thing is, I don't think it should be.

If a player clearly does not want to speak with media (given Lynch's constant one-word responses in media interviews it seems he's tired of the interaction), I don't believe they should have to. The control that the NFL exerts over its players is in some cases extreme (though in other specific cases, far too lax).

Is it really that difficult to find other players who don't mind speaking or desire to speak with the media?

Still colossal BS and should be removed from every contract. More importantly its not that he wont talk to the media because he has many times called reporters he is comfortable talking to and was still fined. Also the way the media has gone after this man when he gives non answers is both unprofessional and should be considered slander.
Hell If they did this to Tiger Woods people would demand the contract be changed, and rightly so!

Not really arguing that it isn't BS, just that he shouldn't be surprised to get fined when he does a thing that the contract he signed says he'll be fined for.

the funny thing is they don't sign that contract their team does. Its one of those implied contracts that all players agree to by getting signed which is a whole other can of worms.

OK. In the interest of accuracy, I dug into this a little, and the media requirements are actually part of the CBA that the players union negotiated with the NFL. So the player reps are the ones that foisted this requirement on everyone else.

As a guess? I'd say they were thinking about all the money this requirement would net them on individual contracts.

But then again, maybe I'm too cynical.

Goodness, no. These people are paid to play. If it's a contract thing, then, well, the law's the law; but the law is human-made and needs revision.

I've heard that professional athletes, in the US at least, are made to take a course designed to teach them how to talk to the media; it would certainly explain why, when they do, they all sound pretty much the same. This is why you never you see a perky newscaster ask a hulking 300-pound steroid monstrosity "What do you attribute your victory to?" and receive the answer "My dark lord and master, Satan".

I can't give my final answer until I know why this was in the contract in the first place, but considering my opinion of this kind of media, I definitely feel inclined to suggest that this requirement be revised out of it. The less prying news people doing into the personal lives of others, the better.

Apparently he gets paid $6 million per year; he should pull his finger out and start quoting Don Quixote for that kind of money. At least trot out some crap poetry - look what Cantona used to come up with. And he's got an ace beard now.
Yeah, the contract just states that he has to be "available." Quality or sense of answers are not required, so he could just talk as much nonsense as possible to the cameras until they stop asking him stuff.

"Hey champ, what did you think of your performance?"

"Well the trout were really flying tonight, and our skyscrapers really sang in the second half. Naturally you always wish for a larger slice of the book but you can't make a ship by burning down a library if you know what I'm saying!"

Now, I don't watch sports. I don't really follow it either, but one thing I do know is that they get payed absurd amounts of money. In all honesty, if someone is paying you that much, you outta do what they tell you. If it's in his contract then he should do it.

Is it BS that they have to? No. From what I understand (keep in mind this is very little so I may be wrong) their jobs are pretty easy, I mean they have to play their favorite Sport. It makes sense that there should be more to it then just that.

well let me put it this way they play a game that's highly physical and can sometimes cause major injury/death, then have to talk to people less then 5 mins after they get off the field who will then misquote them to get the most shock value. Now tell me would you want to deal with that like at all? Also hes more then happy to talk to reporters, he just prefers to talk to ones he believes have ethics.
