Hey there escapees.
It's game time again and I'm finding myself in a mood for old skool RPG games. I'm talking Baldur's gate/Icewind Dale style here. Simple swords and magic play, not too open (I'm looking at you Fallout!), not holding your hand too much and just plain fun.

I have tried my hand on some abandonware but the graphisc/complexity just put me off big time, Ascii is too abstract for me, really, and other old RPG's are just way too complex...

So does anyone know any cool games for me to check out?

That said to add some discussion value, do you ever play old games? Or are you daunted by the graphics and/or complexity?

EDIT: Please don't forget to reccomend me oldskool RPG's :)

you might want to try out Betrayal at Krondor [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betrayal_at_krondor], an RPG made in 1993, very story-driven (it often resembles a book), kind of clunky nowadays but certainly playable.

haha older than 1998 is old school now? Jesus, now i feel old. Thanks kid.
You and me both!

I'd recommend having a look at the Ultima series, specifically from Ultima 6 onwards.

Neverwinter nights is also very good, and has plenty of additional content that you can download for free!

I also need the obligatory Good Old Games [http://www.gog.com] plug, not heavy on RPGs, but plenty of old games.

I just got done playing the 7th Saga on my SNES emulator. It wasn't too big on story, but the turned based grinding was pretty fun. You might want to check it out if your in to turn-based RPGs.

Super Mario All-Stars, when I still played games Nintendo made...

God, the SNES era was the first console generation I experience, nostalgia doesn't get much better than this.

And while we're going SNES:
Chrono Trigger (pure genius RPG, with a magnificent time-travel concept)
Final Fantasy IV, V and VI (all classics, I personally like IV the best)
Troddlers (soooo much fun in co-op)
Eartbound (fun RPG)
Illusion of Gaia (another fun RPG)
Soulblazer (and yet another one)
Terranigma (they just keep coming, don't they)
Secret of Evermor/Mana/the Stars (okay, final three, I promise)
Alfred Chicken (amusing platformer)

And, to finish, some PSOne titles:
Legend Of Legaia (underrated RPG)
Crash Bandicoot 1 & 2 (I'd also say Chrash 3 and the Spyro-series, but those are from 1998 or later)
Final Fantasy VII

I do believe all other PSOne title I still replay are from 1998 or later...

I didn't vote, because I love playing old school games, not for the memories, but because they're really great games.

(*opens old game drawer and fishes around for a while*)

Emerges successfully with a copy of Grim Fandango.

Grim fandango is really good although I havent had the time to play it because I have been busy. Wait a minute (*checks to-do list*)

I HAVE TIME NOW

Rayman 2 the Great Escape for the 64. Great platforming, original characters, decent story, and also not very well known (Why is beyond me).
