Personally I'd say they should go for it if they really think they can make great games on that medium.

Especially with SSD becoming cheaper and what not.

...maybe technology has advanced enough that it has re-overtaken the cost of disc but how in the hell could you have a cartridge based game with enough storage to hold everything that a modern game now needs?

Unless someone can answer that question, I'm going with a "there's no way in hell this is real" answer. It makes sense with handhelds since it doesn't require the same space requirements and by their nature, they're going to be portable and moved and discs don't work well in that environment but for a console, what is the pro Nintendo is getting out of it?
Small SSD's or hard drives? Can get a 128GB SSD for the cost of a game, ?47. Obviously that doesn't count in the cost of making a game. Maybe flash, sticks? Can get silly huge amounts of data on tiny sized sticks ... I'm no tech expert though, so running a complicated game from flash might be impossible. I know there are flash games but they are very simple games.

Dunno, just guessing.

I think all this speculation is a disservice to the NX. Nobody even knows what it's going to be, let alone what it's going to play.

If the rumors are true about the NX being a system with an independent handheld and a home console that can link together, then it's possible for the system to use cartridges for fully handheld titles and maybe smaller home titles. I still doubt the home module will only use carts, no matter what media they are based on.

No matter what the NX is, discs are just too dirt cheap for the amount of data they hold to pass up on a device not powered by a battery. I'd rather pay $15-25 extra for a console with an optical drive, than pay $8-15 (or more) extra per game. I'd rather see the NX follow the other consoles' full install methodology, for the same read speed limitations, than see each NX come on media that just adds unnecessary costs to each title. (Of course, if they did find a way to fit large games onto carts for very little extra compared to a disc, then I'm for it.)

However, knowing how Nintendo is always looking at ways to prevent piracy and have exclusive mediums which they are the sole proprietor and distributor of, I don't think this is going to endear them to many 3rd party devs who will have to buy Nintendo's carts to publish their games.
Indeed, Nintendo's media choices from the N64 up to the Wii have affected 1st and 3rd party devs from both financial and technical perspectives, as well as costing Nintendo and their systems' players many titles that went to competing systems or suffered a loss in quality in some way. If they want to take some market share back (and no matter how much they deny it, they do want to), their new system needs to be approachable, both to 3rd parties and the customer.

false. we already know it's going to play Zelda Breath of the Wild and it's 99% likely going to play Pikmin 4

"What is going to play" in terms of media (ie. cartridges).
