Recently I made a new account on my PS3 called Only Live Once. In case the name doesn't give it away, on this account there is a self imposed Iron Man mode: You only get one try. If you fuck up, the game is over. One life per game, two if there's multi-player. I have to admit, while it has yet to end well, it sure ads a lot of tension to things, and it makes you really weigh your decisions.

So far no one's managed to survive all the way to the end of their tale. Jackie Estacado was blown to bits by a helicopter while pursuing corrupt cop Edward Shrote, John Marston shot down while fighting cattle rustlers, Preston Marlowe MIA somewhere in the jungle, a random Recon killed on his second mission (had 4 confirmed kills before he bit the dust,) a WW2 soldier fighting at Iwo Jima bombed by a plane, and a man run over by a truck while working as a freelance merc in Africa. And I just made this account yesterday. The only one I've started and haven't died in is Fallout: New Vegas, but I can't bring myself to play more of it, it's just too boring.

What about you? Have you tried any games in "Iron Man" mode? If not, do you intend to?

Also, what games seem like the best candidates for this play style?

Nuzlocke Runs in Pokemon are very fun.
I add as many rules as possible, and the shit gets intense. Although I've managed to get into the Elite 4 with 4 Pokemon all at around level 65 because of the intense training I give them.

I tried it in MGS2. It worked out really well until the boss battles. That was a pain in the ass.

I have, but not anymore. When I was growing up and didn't have many games, it provided a self-imposed way to keep the few games I had interesting.

If I were to do it again, it would be for a game like Dragon Age, and then just to round out achievements (and I'd do it on easy mode).

I'm assuming you're supposed to play on the hardest setting for this, then?

Ratchet and Clank: Deadlocked.
For a while it was the only PS2 game I had that had any replay value, so after I unlocked every little bit of the game, I proceeded to add more and more challenges. In the end, I beat the entire game on the hardest difficulty using only my wrench without dying.

Nah I generally accept that I'm going to die at some point in my games, probably fairly quickly. Also, sometimes dying is the risk you take in having fun... eg. going on rampages in GTA games.

Also...

Do Demon Souls!

Not really, I just want to laugh at you when you waste your money for 3 minutes of gameplay.

I should try that... Probably wouldn't be that hard.

I use to play on hardcore mode in Diablo 2. It was pretty brutal, could spend a full month leveling a character and collecting good gear, then get murdered and its all gone forever.

It's up to the player. You can make up whatever rules/restrictions you want, the only rule you have to adhere to is that there are no continues. If you die, it's over.

No I haven't. It sounds like a fun challenge though. The only thing I can compare it to is when I play Deniable Ops mission in Splinter Cell Conviction on realistic without using any guns. It's... difficult.

Scrolling shooters, just because that's how the spirit of the game is. Infinite continues trivialize the victory. I still can't do it consistently (or often), but it's worth a shot.

Well Dead Space 2 has Hardcore, which I've done. It would be interesting to have more modes like this. I hear Dead Space 2 Severance has an achievement for Hardcore without using ANY saves. But doing this also ruins the fun of a game, majorly.
