Well, if you like games, and seeing what forum we're in, I assume so, you definitely don't want Linux or Mac. And Windows Vista is the spawn of Satan (I should know, I've been using it for almost 2 years) so even though I've never tried it, I'm gonna go with 7, despite the unimaginative name.
I would say Windows 7 is easily better than Vista. I've been using it for months now and haven't looked back. Haven't seen any major compatibility issues to speak of, other than the lazy fucks over at Apple (Quicktime) refusing to make a 64bit version of QTVR. So if you are planning on using the 64bit OS be prepared to deal with some issues with quicktime on occasion.
I guess if you want a legacy OS that you know is somewhat stable then XP but I can definitely say that Win7 doesn't crash or BSOD like Windows XP did.

If by home you mean pure home usage (music, movies, internet) go with Mac (I did...) or Linux - both are hard to "kill", but if games are also a concern... except XP... umm... consoles? I did not saw the "7" in action, so won't say anything about it (Microsoft is already working on NEXT Windows, what that tells you?) and Vista is just lacking.
Obviously I have to go with the crowd and agree that Windows 7 is probably going to be the best choice for the future. Windows XP has been a great OS for a long time but it's getting a little long in the tooth and Microsoft isn't gonna support it forever. I've used Vista but switched to 7 when the RC came out and will be installing it permanently when it comes out in a few weeks.
Unfortunately I still can't get my Wing Commander, Tomb Raider I or Crusader: No Remorse to run properly on yet. And don't get me started on my DOS games!!!

If asking you whether you're sure (really, totally, goddamn sure) you want to do something with every second click and being incompatible with a boatload of games is your definition of working fine, then yes. Otherwise, good god no.Daveman said:
tbh, I don't find the second clicking stuff that bad, which is how I have it set on my laptop, but on my desktop I think I switched it off somehow, it really doesn't happen often enough for me to find it annoying. Also I only have found one game that didn't work on vista which was heroes of might and magic 3 and that's a pretty old game. Besides I'd expect windows 7 will be the same. I've used vista for 2 years and never had a problem with it (apart from that one game), not even a crash despite how much I used it, so I would highly recommend it if it weren't for the fact that Windows 7 is just vista with an upgrade and also a lot cheaper.
In summary, get Windows 7.
If it's for an ordinary home computer, then any windows system is your best bet. After all, it's what they're built for.

Anything that's not windows will probably be pretty secure, so if you don't like having extra security programs go with that. (i.e. you're a porography/illegal download fiend and AVG Free just won't cut it.) The problem is that linux and mac are just usually more complicated and there's some programs out there that are simply not made for them. (Most are, however.)
I haven't tried Windows 7 yet, but I will say that Windows Vista is a fine operating system provided you have a sufficient amount of RAM (4 GB?) and a good processor. (Quadcore?) The sidebar (which can be disabled) and the other nuances of Vista take up a lot of power. XP was never a memory-whore, so a lot (not all) of the problems people have with Vista spawn from simply upgrading from XP and not being able to handle the new software. It's basically the same as trying to play Crysis on a computer with a shitty graphics card.
As a small caveat, I believe Windows 7 addressed many of the "my computer can't handle Vista D:" issues, while keeping other things.
Anyway, I personally use Vista. I have never had so much as a crash while using it on my PC.

i said linux cause frankly it's better than everyone of them out there, it's been doing the new stuff windows and osx do for years
