No, not nearly enough. I think abusing an animal is just as bad as abusing a child. Both of those things look to you as their only source of care in the world, to abuse something so powerless and completely under your control is one of the greatest sins a man can commit. Certainly worse than robbery. They should go to prison. Hard time.
Damnit, beat me to it.
Doubly beaten to it.

5 Years in jail each.
£10,000 fine each.
Lifetime ban from animal ownership.

If you kill via neglect something sentient and sapient for which you have taken responsibility (if you're over 16), you ought to pay for it. You ought to lose a significant fraction of your one and only life to jail, you ought to be so heavily fined that you feel the crime for almost the rest of it, and you ought never to be allowed to keep pets `or` care for children in the future.

PS: I understand the details of `this` specific case are actually pretty sketchy, but in the hypothetical of genuine neglect the above all stands.

I agree, and like I have already said I don't think they were punished nearly enough for their crime. I don't understand peoples apathy about this subject, and am glad to see some other people here that feel the way I do.

Prison sentence with a lifelong pet ban? That's fine.

But dear god, that picture! YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO SEE A SAINT BERNARD'S RIBS!

Animal cruelty should be a felony, and a serious one on top.
Stop having your heads up your asses.
I agree with what I quoted though I would say its seriously not enough.

What I suspect happened here is the issue developed, they tried to keep up with the food intake but realized they couldnt likely because they simply could not afford to. (Seriously, St Bernards eat like horses, now imagine one thats insatiable)

So I guess they decided instead of taking it to a vet (which they likely could not afford either) Or putting the animal down (Understandable given how hard guns are to come by in the UK and could you image trying to kill a dog the size of a human without a gun?) they decided to let nature run its course.

On a very insignificant level I can empathize with the difficulties the circumstances present. Its not what I would consider abuse. Its neglect and that is a completely different thing.

What they should have done is surrendered the animal, allow it to get the treatment it needed. It sucks to loose a pet, but they lost it anyway, and got a completely inadequate punishment for it.

This case is another example of why we need to bring back licensing laws for keeping animals in the UK.

You shouldn't be able to keep a dog if you can't afford to, or don't know enough about their welfare. There are far too many pets in the UK, living in appalling conditions, just because their owners fancied having a pet. It's so selfish.
