Personally I don't find them to be the scourge of gaming that Yahtzee does. The ones that were in the Force Unleashed were pretty cool and they were done pretty well in my opinion.

What's your thought?

QTEs are good if they're used properly. The occasional QTE is good, whereas a game loaded with them gets irritating.

i say they're good to a point but if used too much it just makes the game annoying

That's all I have to say on this matter.

In moderation. It can be argued that Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution are just quick time event games with music.

Its the ones where you repeatedly press the same button(s) over and over as fast as you can that annoy me.

They're not awful, but they can be annoying. Especially when they show up for half a second and you die if you don't hit it. But games like Heavy Rain do quick-time events right.

They can be ok but only if they warrant it in the game like to dodge something or shoot a weak point but they shouldn't be the only solutions like you can slowly dodge but might avoide it still or you can damage the boss but less than if you wait for the quick time.

I liked Gears of War faster reload quick time.

Occaisionally, they're good. Of course if you're going to use them they need to be used a fair amount, not too much but not too little. Other wise you won't be ready for them.

Here's the thing. Pressing a button doesn't feel like a real game event, just an out of place challenge. For all of the flaws, I think Lair had the best quick time events of all time, because the actions you did corroborated with buttons you pressed/motions you used. It was far superior to "better" games like God of War where you do a million and one things just pressing X, O, Square, Triangle. Doesn't feel like I'm actually doing anything when I do that.

Too many are irritating, but too few make the QTE's awkward. somewhere in between "a few" and "a moderate amount." would probably work well. enough so that you're aware that it could happen, but not so much that they happen every time you turn a corner.

I dislike QTEs until every game switches to a system where, after winning a QTE you get a reward. Say in RE4, failing the first boulder QTE might get the boulder stuck in the cave, forcing you to take a longer route with a few enemies, wasting resources and time.

I'd ask...why can't we have both? I mean an option of ON/OFF on QTE? If you don't want them, you just watch the scene with no button hits. If you do, then work out. Not sure how tricky that'd be to program in.

If you think about it though, isn't pressing X, O Square and Triangle is what you're doing anyway to kill people in the grand scheme of things??

Good point. Mirror's Edge is pretty much QTE's, relying on your reaction time and pressing the correct key to move on; disarms, coil jumping etc.

The difference is the way in which it is presented. In Mirror's Edge, it still feels like you have full control, because you have different ways of completing an action. A full-on QTE removes the choice from the player and is therefore frustrating, because you are no longer playing the game.

Maybe, but the entire point of those games is pressing the buttons in the correct sequence with the right timing, which is not the point of something like God of War.

By removing choice in games based around decision-making, the developers are demonstrating a huge amount of laziness and/or sheer lack of imagination.

There is nothing inherently wrong with QTE's. You could argue that the entire video game is just "pressing the right button at the right time", the only difference being that in QTE's you're getting told which one.

Using them occasionally in non-critical situations is what I think would be best. For instance, in Wet you can only kill mini-bosses by QTE's, no matter how much ammo you pour into them. This is a bad use of the Quick Time Event, because it's stupid and pointless.

The whole combat mechanic in Prince of Persia was essentially a QTE, but it worked quite well because it allowed you to mix it up and create your own combos out of them. You could press any button to create a different effect.

Dieing because you didn't press X at the right time is frustrating. Maybe just losing a bit of health, or having to go through a longer route through the level because you mis-timed a jump, would be a more appropriate penalty.

When it comes to QTEs, there is a very fine line between fun and annoying. It usually comes around the time that they happen in either every cutscene, or every other cutscene.

Meh I don't mind them, as long as there not over used.

This may be a bit off topic, but does anyone here, ever lose the quick time events on purpose just to see what happens, I do.

Prince of Persia. Ugh. It annoyed me that much I traded in the game. (for more than I paid for it, in the same shop I bought it from)
