Someone once told me that 4chan was the arsehole of the internet. I kinda agree to be honest. It's a place where mostly questionable people gather to talk about questionable stuff. But at least it's done mostly in one place.

People are t their most brilliant when they are absolutely unrestricted, you see some pretty amazing shit on there every once in a while. If you can learn to look through the trolling threads and retarded spam.

Besides /b/ it's really not all that bad, although I don't go there too often so I can't have too much of an impression. And in regards to /b/, what do you expect when you let people post random things anonymously with no moderation?

You know, back in my day, we had this thing called USENET. Unmoderated, anonymous, and a hell of a lot easier to put annoying users on your killfile.

It still exists. And the parallels are also quite interesting (and I'll lay very good odds that there's more porn and piracy on USENET than there is on 4chan).

Once you wade your way through the spam and sporge, the conversation on USENET is generally well thought-out and of high quality...
