I subscribe to the Terry Pratchett school of thought that questions why entire races are evil. Surely it's individual personalities? Isn't labelling an entire race as "Evil" a bit...racist?

It's always irked me that fantasy = mass uniformity

ALL ORCS = EVIL and suchlike. But also how in the FAR, DISTANT FUTURE!! whole planets seem to adopt a single evironment. You have city-planets with nothing but cities, farm planets with nothing but farms and rolling hills etc.

Earth has a lot more diversity than this (both eviornments and the moral compasses within species) so why don't fantasies?

Meh

Dwarves are cool, though

Dwarves have beards that resemble vikings. They can swing giant axes. They live in mountains. There is nothing more to be said.

Drunken midgets hitting things with axes?

They also have a pretty long lifespan, as well. My vote goes towards the dwarves.

Dwarves, they're adorable!
Tell Gimli that. Bring a stopwatch so you can time how long until he chops of your legs.

OT: I vote Dwarfs. Have long lifespans, brilliant blacksmiths, have the best ale around, and they are incredibly strong. GO DWARFS!
Anyone here play LOTRO? Dwarf runekeepers are AWESOME!

P.S. Where's the hobbit option? We dwarfs need a snack.

Orcs! They don't have personalities or morals getting in the way, they're just a tide of blades and bows that kill everything in sight. If, for example, they have an undying flaming eye seeing things for them, that means they'll kill everything. Everywhere.

And that's awesome.

Alternatively, they can be a wronged but ultimately neutral race like in Warcraft. I enjoy the thought of being both a mindless horde and the lovable underdog.

That kinda sums it up
''and once they fall, they'll be at eye height''
YOU DID NOT JUST SAY THAT! BARUK KHAZAD! KHAZAD MINANUT! (dear god I hoped I spelled that right). Free invisible cookie if you get the reference.
Now that your legs are gone, I can chop off your wee little elven head easier.

Elves every time. I don't know why but they always seem to be the ones I choose. i always end up playing a sort of stealthy rougue elf in my games anyway.

You have no idea how much I agree with every single word in this post. To me, it's something that happens due to the scale of it. We can't conceive of sci-fi planets as being -planets-, because they're huge! So they end up being regions, small states pretending to be planets. Ditto races. Can you imagine how many million orcs there are? And every one of them is an individual? That's crazy! But make them all crazy warriors, and it's manageable. It's also easy - the interesting characters break the mold, and so when there's a compassionate orc or a stoic dwarf or an elf that's less than perfect, that garners interest. But if elves run the full gamut of personality, how do you make a 'unique' one? It requires a lot more effort and you risk alienating the fanbase that -likes- the cliches.

I always pick humans if I can.
This time, I'll have to choose the elves instead.

If you were going for prevalent middle-earth races, why not go Elves Men Dwarves Hobbits Orcs? Well anyways, from the list given, I pick elves. Sure they think they are better than everyone else, but its because they are.

Okay, this is the funniest post I've replied to in a while... To be honest, I don't really care. I was going with the Tolkien - middle earth feel that shows Orcs as being evil. I'm not a racist, I just didn't think it mattered too much with fictional creatures... But cheers for the post though!
