I installed it today for BF3 Beta. I got nothing against it. I won't be using it to buy shit anyhow. Only to play my games. More I don't need. Unless they suddenly get super nice discounts like Steam.

THough I still prefer to keep all my games on 1 service. You can't do shit about it. And I am content with it for now.

I actually got an origin a little while back because I wanted to be able to play Mass Effect 2 without my disk since I was leaving for college and the less disks I have to lug around the better.... But then I read this article http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112559-Internet-Explodes-Over-Origins-Invasion-of-Privacy and now I avoid it like the plague. I will not be using it if I can help it. I'm not sure if EA has adressed this yet, but even if they offer some form of apology, I am not supporting a company that feels such a breech of privacy is necessary. I really wasn't that impressed by BF 2 anyway so whatever, no loss to me.

Is there a rational reason why we shouldn't install Origin? It's just another online store and service provider thingy. There's nothing wrong with it. I know you think that EULA is too intrusive, but most of you don't even understand what it says. You need to read the whole thing, not just the paragraph that sounds bad. That's called "taking things out of context". EA Origin doesn't do anything any other site on the internet isn't already doing. They're just being honest about it.

I installed it for The Sims 3. used to use EA downlaod manager because I got a defective disc. Now I tested it out for BattleField 3. What I can say so far from my experience with BF3 is that it sucks.

No. EA hasn't produced a game i want to play recently and i disagree with Origins ToS. I can live without it. Anybody taking refuge behind "It's just cus you have a steam hardon!" as an argument i invite you to take that shrapnel out of your fucking skull. In fact, i just plain don't like EA and it's habits of raping devs either. I blame their meddling entirely on the wreck that was DA2. So EA can fuck right off. It's a shame though. If i had Origin they could read my angry posts directed towards them!

It'll take a lot to make me turn away from Steam and the occasional GOG.com purchase. But EA made me get Origin when they were fixing my Battlefield Bad Company 2 multiplayer account and play it on that instead. When I heard about the intrusion, I immediately uninstalled it and got BFBC2 working (alarmingly easily) on Steam, so hopefully they can no longer watch. Probably won't reinstall it.

Not going to install Origin. I still haven't forgiven EA for taking the Mirror's Edge servers down for 360, so now more than half the game is inaccessible. I can't do any of the playgrounds, free runs, or speed runs. All I get is story mode and the irritating knowledge that I'd still be able to play if I had pirated it instead of paying for the full retail price.

Well I installed it to play the Bf3 alpha from a while back; you know to see what it was like. Then it all hell broke lose with all that stuff about the privacy stuff and other such stories.

Still not sure if I've managed to remove its taint completly...what if EA's reading this...
exactly THIS.

This is more than likely one of those threads. You know, those ones that aren't meant for me and people like me (ie: people who play almost exclusively on consoles)

To answer the poll, no and I never will. I have consoles games so I should be kept pretty busy for the next few decades with games from today and yesteryear and maybe even games of tomorrow assuming consoles remain consoles in the next gen or two.

It's so embarrassing how many people refuse to have an account on Origin just because they have one on Steam and just refuse to have two accounts!

Do you guys also cry when your laptop is running out of battery and the charger is upstairs? Do you also get upset when the company you work for gives you an Iphone instead of an Android? Man, you guys must really get mad too when the bottom of your foot itches, but when you go to scratch it just tickles!

Man, I know every second of your life is precious - but it took me like five minutes to download Origin. You guys should maybe worry about bigger things in life and put your energy and focus into things more critical then two having two goddamn game server accounts on your computer.

I am so sick of these threads. I also don't see a rule in a rule book anywhere saying that EA isn't allowed to create their own client server and has to just put out their games through Steam. Shut up.
The reason some choose not to install Origin is not because they already have Steam. It's because the EULA clearly states that they get to watch ALL your web history at any time. Every second of your online history belongs to a private company. The newest update even says you're not allowed to sue them.

That being said I think it's bad that Steam almost got monopoly on digital distribution and I like what Origin is trying to do. I just don't think they did a very good job. I did install it to see what it was about and right now I'm not impressed. However Steam looked like shit a few years back, so hopefully they will improve.

EA automatically downgraded my original EA account to an "Origin" account, but I never installed Origin, nor do I plan to in the future.

A lot of people are comparing Origin's agreement to Steam's, claiming they are the same.
And that's a load of shit.

On my system, Steam is permitted to check only the game files I have downloaded from them, for file integrity checks (in case of a bad download or patch) and their Steamworks DRM. I don't even use Steam Cloud in the games I play except where it's absolutely required for the game to function (which basically limits it to achievements and offline-mode login data).

And you know, that doesn't violate or oppose any terms in the Steam TOS.
Such an arrangement would be in direct violation of Origin's TOS, however.

I'm currently too angry at EA to have anything to do with it. Once my anger dies down and I start jonesing for ME3 I'll probably fold and re-install it. Yes, re-install it; my ME2 disc was damaged and wouldn't work so I figured downloading it from Origins might work. It didn't. Polishing the disc with toothpaste however did.

I installed Steam in order to play Half Life 2, a hotly anticipated sequel to a game I really enjoyed. I later started buying games in Steam sales because they were cheap.

What's on Origin? EA games. I just had a browse and I was stunned by the number of games they offered without offering a single one I was interested in. Sims? Nope. Fifa? Nope. Bioware games? I've never got into the ones I bought. Need for Speed? Actually I did buy Carbon and it was kinda fun, but I have plenty of racing games. The Other Big Brown Multiplayer fps? No.

I don't have a lot of willpower, so I'll probably install it at some point. But they have to release a game I want first.

I'm currently using it for Battlefield, and I will only use it for the games that require me to use it. I wont be purchasing anything on it unless I have to.

I don't have a lot against Origin, but right now I have no reason to get it installed. I will if necessary, but I've got Steam for now, and that'll do.

I have little interest in this Origin vs Steam discussion. It seems so arbitrary, even when compared to other arbitrary gamer arguments like PC vs Console, or PS3 vs Xbox. I mean, they're both free right? It's not like you can only buy one and need to defend your choice, they're free! Just get both! XD
This isn't about which one is better, it's about how Origin (among other things) completely obliterates your privacy [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112559-Internet-Explodes-Over-Origins-Invasion-of-Privacy] in a way that I actually thought was completely illegal. I mean I personally have a few issues with Steam too (though not nearly to the same degree), but I grudgingly use it anyway because of the great deals it has and Valve's solid reputation. Origin on the other hand I wouldn't use even if it was giving away games for free.
Your post really nailed the issue for me: reputation. Valve, generally, does its customers good and most people don't any PR, or other, issues with them. From all the shit EA has pulled over the years, I don't think I'm ready to trust them with this level of privacy.

Privacy over the internet is a relic of a bygone era. I worked at a bank, and lowly as my position was, I could check everything a customer was doing. Here in the U.S., at least, you have to sign a release form, as mandated by the Patriot Act, that authorizied agencies will have unfettered access to your account information with, or without your consent. So, it's not so much a privacy issue for me, and more of EA's stinking reputation.

I've been using Origin (or EA Download Manager, as it was called) since 2008, due to Spore and its Creature Creator.

In 2009 I used it to get my free copy of Mirror's Edge.

I've used it for various free promotional DLCs.

Most recently, I got an extra (free) copy of Mass Effect 2 through it... and I have my TOR pre-order registered to it. I'll keep using it, because I'm neither paranoid nor upset about having to manage my EA account.

EA has probably secretly implanted Origin onto every computer in the world with an internet connection.

I'd never willingly install it.
