Really?

Well, all of my remaining interest in SWTOR just slipped away.

the only time I will be using origin is for when ToR comes out, otherwise i plan to have nothing to do with it.
Just wanted to clear this up for you guys, according to the devs at TOR, Origins is only used if you bought the DD version from Origin, and even if you did you will not have to run Origin while playing, nor do you have to launch the game or patch through it even if you did buy it from there.

So, no Origin in your TOR unless you want it to be.

OT: I have no issue with Origin. It doesn't need to be running to play its games like Steam which pleases me, but if Origin really wants to compete with Steam (with a wide selection) or the Amazon downloading service (where everything is cheaper than everywhere else by a huge margin), Origin needs to find its own schtick other than it isn't annoying to use. Not really a plus in its favor, even if it does keep track of my EA purchases from other sites.
And did they say anything about installing Origin to activate TOR? I had to make an NCSoft account for City of Heroes, a S.O.E. account for Matrix Online and Galaxies, a Battle.net account for WoW, an EA Online account for multiplayer in Bad Company 2 on the 360. The safe money is every title from Battlefield 3 forward will have to interact with Origin in some manner.

Valve has always treated me well whereas EA has not.

I don't plan on using Origin for the sole reason that I simply don't trust EA, if I want an EA game i'll buy retail instead.

But... EA servers are shit.
Honestly, they're as reliable as a rock bein' a life-preserver.

This is going to go the same way as the battle of iPod vs. Zune... well except maybe that EA is likely not going to release things on Steam (through which I get all my game-release news). EA is basically shooting themselves in the foot, and their marketing department is full of morons.

It's going to be tough to topple Steam, so I picked Powdered Toast Man! He'll solve this little dispute by giving everyone powdered toast!

Origin is nothing more than a blatant copy of Steam, except it doesn't work as well, does't look as good, and doesn't have as many games. The fact that EA is trying to strongarm everyone by making their games exclusive to it make me sad.

Don't think it really matters. It's afterall free software, so in case a game becomes exclusive to one il really won't do much more than boot up a different program.
But so far I do like Steam, and I wonder if Origin will have anything new to add.

You can use the EA account you made for Battlefield as the account for TOR, they've merged together some time ago I believe. As for Origin and TOR, here's the quote from the Dev here:

Thank you for the clarification, Stephen. I have one more question, will we have to install Origin and run it in order to play the game, get updates, etc. even if we purchase a boxed copy?
No, you won't.

While Origin will be the exclusive digital retailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic (in other words, if you want to buy it online and download it, you?ll do so through Origin) that does not mean that Origin is required for you to access or play The Old Republic.

Origin is a digital storefront, and the desktop application is there to give you quick access to Origin exclusives and deals.

However, you won?t need to launch the Origin application to run The Old Republic, nor will you patch the game via Origin. Once the game is on your hard disk, you?ll be connecting to our servers to patch and launch the game, and Origin does not have to be running to do that.

edit: Added original question Mr. Reid was answering, for better context.

Steam will win. It has way too much of a head start over Origin, is better than Origin and Steam isn't run by childish gits.

Edit: Correct me if I'm wrong but could you not just buy an EA game from a retailer then put it in your Steam Library as a non-Steam game?

Correct, my friends will be seeing

Resonance is playing Mass Effect 3 (non-steam game)
Resonance is playing Battlefield 3 (non-steam game)

That's actually pretty damned reliable. Well, mostly. If it's anything but say, Pumice, it'll ALWAYS sink, so that's reliable. However, if it IS Pumice, it would need to displace more water than it weighs (+ your own weight) to stay afloat.

So, they are reliable, for all the wrong reasons.

I've had a bad first experience with Origin. I was going to install the DLC for Need for Speed Shift 2 (which is a first for them), so I Googled the DLC, looking for the traditional patch.exe file to give me the DLC. Couldn't find it. I then realized I had to download Origin, create a new account (because my last EA accounts aren't good enough), then search for the DLC which is difficult because it doesn't come up in the search bar. After this, I wondered why EA would make me go through all this shit because they want me to use their Steam clone.

Valve gives us free-stuff? Isn't it cheap stuff? I mean they had Portal 1 for free once but were there any other times? Not sure myself.
They also gave away one of their top games, TF2, and the Summer Sale gave away stuff, if you had tickets by getting 'cheevs and what not

I understand that they may be trying to balance out the digital distribution field to allow for more competition, but this all sounds like they're getting sort of some exclusivity deal with Origin. I know they're not moving solely to Origin, but I'd imagine they're getting a deal just for not having it on Steam since that would bring tons of customers for the other platforms.

I'm fine with a little healthy competition, but if this ends up coming to me needing to install a different client for every damn game I buy, that'll piss me off.

I don't use either since I game on the consoles. And when I do get a computer for gaming, it will be steam for my free copy of Team Fortress and indy games. Everything else is going to be probably physical copy.

Well, competition is always a good thing. That said, however, i hope Steam crushes Origin.
Here here.

The reason that competition is good is that monopolies are prevented from taking foot and then using their power as sole distributor / provider / creator to distort the market and create higher prices. However... Steam recognise doing that would open up a potential gap in the market... therefore they have the best, cheapest sales of games seen anywhere in the world xD

EA are c*nts... no... rather a triple c*nted hooker. They don't mind what they have to do, they will advertise in perverse ways and be complete dicks about the way they do things, so long as they get a few more... sales.

Down with Origin, but Steam can slaughter them via pricing them out of the market (by lowering their prices).

My apologies, I completely forgot about TF2[sub]despite me owning the game.[/sub] And true that but I feel that Valve's sales make them a better company than giving away free stuff. Their prices are ridiculously low.
