For a long while now I've known award ceremonies like the Oscars are nothing more than advertisement tools, but it's come to my attention on several occasions recently that people around me really take 'best actor/picture/album/eyeliner/woman of the year' and the like very seriously.

If, during a conversation, I point out a film is bad, overhyped, etc, backing my statements up with a deep analysis, people will often comment "yeah, well, it won an oscar for X" as if to say it's solid evidence from God himself that the film is good and therefore my opposing opinion is irrelevent.

I recently had a work colleague force me to watch some low budget American movie about a gangsta wannabe (not my thing) insisting I watch because it was nominated for two Oscars. Funnily enough, the film wasn't a scratch on something such as, say, American History X.

So how do people approach award ceremonies? Do you follow them. Do you make decisions when buying products depending on what awards they've received?

They must for some as for instance albums which win the Mercury Award always report a steep increase in sales whenever they win.

This can go for games, music, shampoo products, or anything really, but I'm mostly interested in film awards as these are the ones which so many take so seriously.

I don't care about awards ceremonies in terms of who actually gets the award, no.

I don't think it says anything significant about the quality of the product either, apart from that certain people liked it. That doesn't mean I'll like it, although it might increase the probability somewhat of me liking it, but it's not certain.

I would never watch one on TV, but I like going to award ceremonies, if I'm invited. If they bother to send me an invite that usually means it's free entry and a free feed so I'm not going to turn that down, some of the spreads they put on for industry functions are pretty good and worth sitting through all the bullshit speeches for.

I care about the Oscars and the Razzies, but I do not care about any other award or ANY of the ceremonies.

I kinda care, since they are usually picked by people who know something about films. Sure they can be very wrong (last year was just horrible), but I tend to watch a movie if it has a certain ammount of Oscars. I do form my own oppinion on them afterwards, but Oscars are usually a good pointer to films that might be good.

I'm fairly interested to see how it turns out and I'm willing to accept that what I want to see win might not be the choice that others go for.

I do think the forced segregation of animated films is bullshit though.
