The big geek movie of 2012 was The Avengers. Pacific Rim was big geek movie of 2013.

So there is a question for you guys:
Which one of these contenders do you think was (is) better?

I personally think that both movies were great in their own way:

The Avengers is the end result of the riskiest move of modern movie industry: creation of a few at first glance unrelated movies (for people that don't read comics, at least), that are linked together in the "final" one.

Pacific Rim is a brand new IP (which is another risky move in modern Holywood), which was the very first Mecha/Kaiju movie from west since Robot Jox and this USA Godzilla movie that is quite bad. It was basically a huge love letter to people who simply like such flicks. It also one of the few movies (if not the only one) where gigantic robots fealt, well, real: huge, hulking monstrosities, slow yet powerful, with minimum of decorative features, unlike those shown in most anime and western cartoons. Plus, freaking Cherno Alpha!

Yet in the end, for me, The Avengers is the winner in this debate simply because they had lesser ammount of OBVIOUS mess-ups: killing 2 most interesting Jaegers after 5 minutes battle just to show how powerful Kaijus are, this brain-link, which was IMHO made just to give reason to showing this great scene from Makos memories, and many others.

But both of those movies are still amazing.

If you'd press me it'd have to go for The Avengers, though Pacific Rim had the better action (eventhough it was only in the middle).

But honestly, I found both movies rather forgetable.

Both were pretty entertaining blockbusters, but I preferred Pacific Rim. I'm getting really bored with the comic book movie franchises so it was very refreshing to watch a well made summer blockbuster that had nothing to do with DC or Marvel.

Both are really good.

But I find Avengers lost less when it was translated to home screens, while Pacific Rim gets a lot of its enjoyment from the big screen and spectacle.

At the moment, I'd have to go with The Avengers. That might change once is see Pacific Rim at home. I saw it in theaters, in 3D, while rather drunk. I did enjoy the hell out of it but the busy 3D combined with booze and a small screen frequently messed with my head.

Avengers for me. Yes Pacific Rim had incredible action. And that was enough. But the rest of the movie was lacking. The Avengers had more action, though less incredible. But it also had the other movies backing it and a better story on it's own. That's how I see it at least.

I saw Avengers twice in theaters and bought the Blu-Ray.

Pacific Rim bored me so much that I pulled out my cellphone and started reading Puella Magi Madoka Magica fanfiction through the climax.

Easiest poll I've had in a while.

Pacific Rim. Avenger was fun. But Pacific had more love in it. It's references, it's geek joke (I will love the Leibniz Newton refrence till I'm dead) the action, everything was incredibly fun. I've seen it acouple of times already andI'm thinking about buying it, which I don't do often. ANd Idris Elba kicks Samuel L. Jackson's ass as the imposing comander (come at me).

As much as I LOVED Pacific Rim but I voted for the Avengers. The reason being was that it has fanservice to due to it having the other characters from their respected film all together in one big screen (ok the same can be said to Pacific Rim bring one big mecha and anime reference but honestly I had to be told which scenes/ parts were actual references) and the Avengers plot/ story telling wasn't as cheesy compared to Pacific Rim (the scientist oddcouple and the co pliot acting like a schoolgirl fan toward the main character).

Avengers, easily.

Big mech vs monster battles were cool and great to watch but the rest of the film was painful.

I was pretty disappointed by both (and I'm not one of those haters of comic-book movies...I genuinely expected both of them to be good, given their excellent directors), but I'd say Avengers was better.

I thought the majority of Pacific Rim had TERRIBLE dialogue and storytelling (cliche doesn't even begin to describe it), not to mention certain elements of setting made no sense (why not set up heavy coastal artillery against these things? Why does a melee strike do more damage than a hellfire missile? Why are F-35s using kamikaze tactics against the monsters?). The fights themselves were kindof underwhelming too. Honestly I think the movie would have been better in Michael Bay's hands (yeah...I really didn't like Pacific Rim).

Avengers on the other hand was just kindof lukewarm. It was well-made and all the acting/dialogue was well done, but I just never felt a sense of threat from this Loki fellow, considering how powerful the SHIELD team was. Heck, the greatest threat to the good guys was inter-party conflict...

That said, Avengers still ended up being a decent film in my opinion, while Pacific Rim was just awful.

I enjoyed both, but I'm not sure I adored them. I have this horrible tendency to point out flaws and annoyances when I watch movies though, so this might have weighed on the decision. As much as I adored Pacific Rim (and believe me I did), due to it really being just a call back to the old kaiju movies a friend and I were able to point out every detail and event way prior to them occurring. Although I believe this to be the point, it was rather underwhelming. The acting was sub-par and some of the characters didnt make sense in terms of their reasoning.

Avengers was decent, but again underwhelming. As much as I love Loki (both comic and movie), he doesn't feel like such a powerful villain. I don't feel much of a threat. A lot of other scenes were rather confusing as well (why place Hulk into a flying ship, knowing full well his destructive capabilities?!).

I enjoyed both, but if pitted against one another, probably Avengers.

Hmmmmm. How do they compare "Sin" wise:

vs

To me, the sins of Pac Rim were a lot worse than Avengers. I do write, seeing the giant Robots was terrific!!!

And just a bonus:

So often when watching the movie its like, "taking those monsters out seems like it should be far easier."

Both were great movies IMO, but if I had to choose, I'd reluctantly pick The Avengers. It's simply the better movie overall. Pacific Rim suffered greatly from pacing and storytelling problems and the Avengers was damn near perfect for a blockbuster.

That said, I did think Pacific Rim was significantly more fun to watch, aside from the few times where I wished they'd spend another 15-20 minutes on certain topics/plot points. The action and visuals in that movie were simply fantastic, and more than made up for its shortcomings in other areas.

Coincidently I just saw Pacific rim for the first time today, a real shame I didn't catch it in the theatres.

My vote is for Pacific Rim, it proved that dumb and fun can still be done in a smart way, I loved the homage made to a staple of Japanese culture, the ridiculous and awesome fight scenes that didn't confuse you with shaky cams, lens flares, epileptic clipping.

But most importantly it was an original idea, not a remake, prequel, sequel, adaptation, re imagining or any other thing. Originality is rare in Hollywood, especially when it turns into something awesome like pacific rim

I enjoyed them both, but only one of them gets a Megas XLR video.

In all seriousness, they're just both damn good. I still vote Pacific, though.

In terms of achievement in film, The Avengers takes it. The fact that they managed to make a half dozen seperate movies as backstory and actually had a coherent final film is incredible.

Honestly though, I think Pacific Rim is the better movie overall. The dialog in The Avengers is slightly better, but I completely disagree with people who say Pacific Rim's was terrible. It served it's purpose and did fine. It was clever in places and plenty dramatic in others.

It really comes down to action and in the end, I thought Pacific Rim did its action far better. It was more tense, more interesting and had the kind of climactic scale I'm a huge sucker for.

Also the originality thing is a pretty big deal. I well aware that PR is basically just westernized anime, but it's still far more interesting and original than The Avengers as superheros are just getting dull at this point.

Oh and Guillermo Del Nacho is just awesome. The Avengers is a product of money making. Pacific Rim is a product of love.

I mean come on, how can you not love this guy?

Pacific Rim wins hands down for me. I really don't like The Avengers. It's weird, I love all of the stand-alone marvel movies, but I just find The Avengers dull; barely anything in it worked for me Pacific Rim on the other hand made me cry. People getting into giant robots in a desperate struggle for the survival of mankind? That shit hits me where I live.

Also, boat swords.
