Why is it that people keeps saying that episode 3 is taking too long?
They want it to be awesome and it wont unles they have enough time to make it a good game.
Do you really want a rushed episode 3 to finish off the Half Life series?

Well no, but it's going on 3 years since Ep2, which is a long time to wait for a game which is meant to be episodic. Even then, Ep2 took about 3 years after Ep1 (I think is was those 2), so the gap currently isn't too big.
I just wish they'd give us something to show that they are actually doing work on it. I think the last thing was the sign language video, which was last year sometime.

Valve's problem is that they say when it will come out and then they bail on it. They've ended up with so many products now that they're always going to piss someone off with making a delay be it Half Life ep 3, Portal 2 or a TF2 update. The only thing that surprises me is that people are surprised that Valve don't release stuff.

Well they're certainly not rushing. They stopped work on it entirely for ages. That's what pissed me off.

I think after Portal, they'll move back onto the Half Life story.

Think about it, they put effort into each series as needed. When L4D needed help, they pulled people from the TF2 project, slowing down the updates. Then, when HL ep2 needed help, they pulled from elsewhere.

Right now, it's Portal's turn. Then we'll see the end of the Combine.

Damn, did the ending really piss me off and sadden me in ep 2...

Episode 2 was awesome and didn't take this long to produce... Valve kind of misses the point of episodic content. Of course, I don't want the game to be rushed, but this is getting ridiculous. I'll gladly exchange some tiny cut corners for playing the game any time this century.

The delay is not to make a perfect game, but to continue to milk LFD, Portal, and other Steam projects since there is quick money in those efforts. Not sure I blame them.

I used to care about this topic immensely, but I just don't any more. There comes a point where you have to sit back and realise the difference between taking time making a game and taking the piss with your fanbase.

That time is probably being put towards the whole "Fanboys are dickheads, let's do everything in our power to stop them emailing us with their dickhead comments". I don't care, it's not Duke Nukem so it will come whenever that is and people will play it and Fanboys will hate it because they spent the entire wait time tarding out about it anyway.

Do people seriously think about this more than once a month? This is the first time I even thought about it since the last time someone put up a thread about it and that was around christmas.

Episode 2 was released almost 3 years ago. The whole point of the "Episodic" content was so that it would be shorter, smaller and therefore less expensive. Now, even if it IS a full length game, taking your time on it certainly does not mean that the game will be better. Sure, less prone to be buggy but not at all better. Unless they're designing a new engine or making serious upgrades to Source for Episode 3, I don't see why it would take this long to finish it.

Though of course, I didn't really like any of the half life games, so I don't care that much personally.

It's been so long since episode 2, few more months doesnt make much difference.
Interested to know how it 'ends'. Perhaps Freeman actually says something at the end and Valve have yet to find a good enough voice actor :p

I think that episode 1 and 2 confirmed in their head that they just don't do episodic content very well, and if you look at what episodic content -means- to them (TF2 content packs, L4D2 passing) it's very clear they've changed their priorities. I don't think we'll see an 'episode 3', I think we'll just see "Half life 3".

No, it'll take as long as it takes and that's that.

Valve have never suffered from that method before.

Well I'm glad that even though Valve do take a very long time to get things done, what they give us is quality. I wouldn't mind haveing to wait I've just got to make sure not to board the hype train for when it does arrive. I will set my expectations to high and will end up disappointed. Never again. Not after the MW2 accident.

The episodic games concept has long been thrown out the window. EP3 will be the end of the HL2 story arc. I like to think that they are taking their time becasue they want to give the story arc a fitting conclusion. If it isn't announced by E3 next year, I wil become impatient, but now, I am willing to wait.

At this rate they would have to include HL2E3 and HL3 in one game package.

in either case I feel that this is going to be another DN:Forever story.

I'm not bothered by the wait. I'm bothered by the fact that it's called "EPISODE 3". As few people have already noted, Valve has missed the point of episodic content by about a thousand parsecs [footnote]Parsec is 3+ lightyears.[/footnote]. The point was to release shorter games for lesser prices and in acceptable time. They've made shorter games, yes, and i think prices are indeed lower, but they still take ages to develop them. Episode 2 was what, 8 hours of gameplay? It was only recieved well because there were Portal and TF2 included, which provided some more gameplay (significantly more, in the case of TF2).

I think it would be easier for them to just give us Half-Life 3 in one piece instead of 3 episodes, the wait would probably be shorter.

It's Valve, the best strategy with their releases is to jsut forget all about the game.
Then when it finally does get released you hven't waited for it and you aren't disappointed by the hype.
