Poll: PC gamer getting a console...OH NOES!

This thread has probably been done before, but I would like to state my case.

So, I do the majority of my gaming on the PC(which will most likely last me at least another half decade before having to upgrade). I just like keyboard/mouse way more than a gamepad for shooters, which is my favorite genre. However, recently my gf and I have been playing my old Playstation 2, specifically things like Tekken, wrestling games, Dynasty Warriors, and will be more than likely be branching out to more games, including shooters. It has got me thinking that perhaps I need to get a new console. Now, I purchased a Wii when it came out and I was thoroughly dissatisfied with the game selection, but things may have changed since then. I could take it back from my sister, if she doesn't use it that often. Or I could purchase an Xbox 360(probably a 4gb one). I won't consider the Playstation 3 because it just seems far too expensive for me. So, what would you recommend?

edit: since so many are vocal on the issue, I added a PS3 option anyway. Edit2: Or not, no clue how to edit a poll or if it's even possible. It's not letting me add a 4th option.

If you're looking for massive variety and don't mind the aging graphics then the PS2 has pretty much the biggest library of any console. The 360 has better online play than the Wii obviously, but it sounds like you get that out of the PC.

PS3 is about the same price as the 360 last time I checked. Some 360 exclusives are ported to the PC anyway, so I'd recommend the PS3 if anything.

PC gaming is only expensive to those that have to be on the bleeding edge of technology. You can build a PC that will keep you gaming for at least 10 years without having to upgrade very much and it will only cost you around $700, $1000 at the most.

As for the console choices out there, I'd go for a PS3, they're about the same as a 360 now and it seems to me there's a wider choice of games out there for it, plus it's a Blu-Ray player on top of that.

That is a bit dramatic. It seems the OP just wanted something to supplement his PC, not replace it.

The 360 has some good games that are not on the PC, but as far as some of the big exclusives go, i think the PS3 has more that are not also available on PC as well. I would just say do some research and see what types of games you like and then see which system has more of them for your likes.

From what you mentioned, Tekken, shooters, and Dynasty Warriors, those games are readily available on both platforms, so your choices would really boil down to the exclusives. a 4GB 360 is 199, and if you are wiling to spend a little bit more money, you can get a used PS3 for about 250. PS3s are generally very reliable, so getting a used system should be a minor concern.

I'm going ahead and calling this. I had a top-of-the-line PC built in 2006 for $2,000 dollars American. It lasted me all of three years and then it needed a three hundred dollar upgrade. It still can't run The Witcher. That's less than four years, not even half your decade theory.

Why? Browns mother-effing Law and all its variations. PCs grow at an exponential rate. I abandoned the PC. I think it's a sinking ship, whether or not you agree I don't care. I know I can get a brand-new PS3 for the cost of my upgrade alone.

In my defense, when I built my PC, I was much more naive about money and just really hated gamepads. I'm slowly getting more accustomed to it, but god what I'd give for keyboard/mouse compatibility for consoles.

The 4gb Xbox 360 is about $100 cheaper than the PS3 from what I've seen. I just don't know if 4gb would be enough or not.

For those advocating PS3: Would that really be best since so many PS3 games are also ported to the PS2?

If it's any consolation, I'm sure regular insane steam sales will keep me tethered in some fashion to the master race of gaming.

Wow. I spent $1000 on mine in 2008 and I still have yet to find a game I can't run on max, and if I ever do, it's a really simple matter of buying a now cheap video card and crossfiring or adding more RAM(those will most likely need upgrading before my processor). The only bad thing that has happened is one of the extra case fans is jammed.

Kidding. I've never understood gaming platform wars. Anyway, as many people have pointed out, the PS3 is now the same price as the 360. If the Wii is yours, then technically you can take it back, but I personally think that's a little mean if your sister enjoys it so much. If you want to play online, 360 requires you to pay for it while the PS3 you don't have to. Otherwise, both consoles are worth owning in my opinion.

If you're going to buy a console, buy the PS3, or just stick with your PS2 since games are still relatively easy to find. The 360 is a waste of money because virtually everything worth playing on it is going to get ported to the PC anyway, if it's not multi-platform on launch day.

I'm a PC gamer with a 360, and I only bought like four games for it and it spends most of its time collecting dust. Biggest waste of money ever.

10 years? I'd say 5 at most, and then it better be a really good one custom made. On the other hand upgrading and keeping the PC up to date is a fun hobby. Then again, PS3 won't last 10 years either; and Xbox will die every couple years from the dreaded ORD.

To be fair, $700 is still more than a PS3.

Consoles are a very difficult subject. I have all 3 consoles. After the Prime Trilogy, the Wii has gone untouched. The PS3 I use every now and then, mostly for PS3 exclusive games such as Uncharted. The Xbox 360, however, I use all the time. I find it has the best collection of games in the U.S., and many Japanese developers aren't bothering to port games over to the PS3 anymore (I don't know the REAL reason, but I would guess sales figures). It also has some fantastic Xbox 360 Exclusives, but, since Xbox is owned by Microsoft, a lot of these exclusives end up on the PC later on. A nice thing is that this is now going in reverse as well. For example, Torchlight is now on Xbox Live, and you can play with all of your friends. If you've not heard of Torchlight, think "Diablo II" on Xbox.

So, in short, I would suggest getting the Xbox 360. Although the PS3 has some great games such as Uncharted and Heavy Rain, I find that the Xbox 360 generally has more games overall, including their own exclusives such as Halo, Alan Wake, Gears of War, and a whole plethora of JRPGs (Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia*, Infinite Undiscovery, etc). Also, I enjoy Microsoft's marketing strategy more. Although it's true that we have to pay for Xbox Live, we always get great deals, free stuff, etc, that make it pay for itself.

Edit: As I saw somebody point out the RROD, I'd like to bring up two things.
1) I've never gotten the RROD, and neither has anybody else at my college. If what Microsoft says is to be believed, it's generally caused by blocking the fan, so as long as you don't do that, it seems to be fine.
2) If your Xbox dies for any reason whatsoever, you just ship it to them (they'll pay S&H) and they'll send you another one. So it's really not an issue, other than having to wait 3-5 days for the replacement.

Well, I've often said why limit yourself to one platform if you don't have to? So go branch explore. Considering your taste in games, you should probably go for the 360.

PS3 personally, though I hate sony for their recent shenanigans.

With PS3 you get exclusives that will basically for the most part remain exclusive (and not be ported to the PC) You do get the niceties of a decent blu ray player, plus a semi functional webbrowser for those times for whatever your unable to access the internet via your PC. Also having free online play is a definite advantage.

With 360 you get more and smoother windows intergration and networking. A better avatar system (sorry, not a fan of home and its ugly "realistic" models. Seemingly a slightly larger and easier to work with marketplace system. Also the kid/family/party friendly Kinect, which seems superior to move to me personally.

Honestly, Pros and Cons for both, but I think the real deciding factor would be the fact that at the moment PS3 is hitting its stride. The 360 is waning, and in all likelihood you will see a 3rd generation Xbox a LOT sooner than a 4th generation Playstation. So Longevity is what I side with.

My Advice, when buying a console look at the Exclusive Games. Games only on said consoles. I like you was a pc game and did allow the "evil" of the console world to lure me.

You must understand a console can't replace a pc. There simply are always games and situations where a PC wins outright. Some games don't even make it on the Consoles. Or in such a limited version that it doesn't works.

I like consoles they work, they are pretty easy and once you get used to the controller they are just great. And yes many shooters end up on Consoles. Most actually and with on line services like PSN and Xbox Live it is very enjoyable.

The point is you have to give it time. At first it might feel very new.. and lacking. But it takes time and if given enough the feeling of accepting the limitations will set in. The Joy of how much simpler Consoles are.

You have to get used to it and really that just takes time. But yes consoles are great.. you seen it with the PS2!

Now if you buy a Xbox 360, do buy a HDD, Don't be an idiot and buy the one with the HDD. Because you'll need it not joking! If you play shooters you want updates, map packs and more. The in build 4Gbyte won't do and 2x 16gbyte flash only gets you so far. Not to mention really if you are pro gamer..are you going to seriously call yourself a gamer without the HDD.

Indeed buy the HDD.

What can I say. It is in the games.. it is your choice in the end. Your money!
In the end I put linux on my laptop and never looked back. Now my laptop is not game friendly. But I haven't had to look for a new one yet and the battery only was one replaced. So there you go. I only miss 2-3 games.
