You know stupid me I didn't know what Impulse was, now I looked it up, didn't realize it was part of Gamestop lol. At least if I went through them I'd be getting points haha.

Voted Other.

Amazon, play.com, any other on-line retailer who then post me the physical game with no postage charges. Always cheaper than steam, doing it that way, plus I get a physical copy of the game. The Downside is the wait for a few days while the game comes via snail mail.

Case in point for two games I was thinking of buy at the moment...

Assassins Creed Brotherhood PC
Steam £29.99 Amazon.co.uk £6.99

Hawx 2 PC
Steam £19.99 Amazon.co.uk £4.95

Unless you are lucky that Steam is doing a aggressive sale on the game you want to buy, then they are normally more expensive than a physical copy, at least in the UK.

For the most part I buy mine as hard copies, either in a store or through an online retailer like MightyApe.

Partly it's because I like having access to a physical copy which allows me to install and uninstall the game at will without having to download the game each time. And partly it's because until recently I didn't have a internet plan that really supported downloading large games in a reasonable timeframe (even now it's not great - Australian internet isn't very good y'all).

Retail all the way. Store near me and started to hunt down old classics on Amazon this year.

I only have one game on Steam which isn't a hard copied install (Serious Sam SE HD).

I've been a long time PC gamer. So for quite a while it was retail. Now adays, it's from several sources. Those being, in order of most used to least:

Steam
GOG
Retail

I used to use Impulse, primarily for things like Sins of a Solar Empire. However, now that everything I wanted or had on Impulse is now on Steam, including SOASE, I've no need for that horrific, Gamestop-owned pain.

You put "PC gamers" and "Steam" in the same thread.

What did you bloody expect would happen. Generally speaking, PC gamers love Steam.

Steam, GOG, and Humble Indie bundles. Along with general internet for a lot of indie games that can only be found on their own site, like Spelunky.

basically, from wherever I can =P
if it's available on retail and at a price I can afford, I buy that
if it's digital and at a price I can afford, I buy that

retail gets extra points for the smell of a new game though

I use steam and GoG for digital, and Amazon for physical, as the only store near me with PC games barely has any and it's constantly shrinking.

Games which I plan on getting, as in where I know I'm going to buy the game, I buy from retail, because I like knowing I have the disc form, and I like my collection of awesome box art, if it is spontaneous, such as a Steam sale, or my friend links me a game I'm interested in, I'll just buy it on Steam and save myself travelling expenses and hassle.

I usually get a hard copy, either through Amazon.com or in a store, unless there are no hard copies of the game (such as Bastion) in which case I download it from Steam.
