except windows 8 looks like a scary future where we will be forced to use "tablet style" shit on our computers :/

or you could just stick to Windows 7. You act like the gaming industry likes to try new things. They still use DX9 for god's sake.

Yeah the real argument it between Windows and Mac, not PC and mac.

I'm not going to even try and pretend that running a linux system is a good idea for non-computer savvy people.

Steam is going to linux. Combined with the utter shite that is Win8 interface and filesystem and I may soon be able to ditch windows as my primary OS.
I was just discussing that with a friend the other day... We're both going to get on learning how 2 Linux together over this summer.

Or go the way of people with Windows XP, hatefully boycott the next generation of Windows until something satisfactory comes out.

Also Lawl Macs. No.

A PC is a personal computer. A Macintosh is a type of personal computer. They are the same thing.

Mac vs Windows would be a better question. And my answer would be Mac, because I've been using them since I was a kid, and I'm used to them.
Not according to Apple. Apparently, they want PC to mean "everything but Mac," which is a bit strange. Weird marketing there.

OT: Let the flame wars begin.

.. Ok , you don't have to do anything at all to your pc, stick to windows 7. What, you think everyone's going to drop support for it? Things still support XP for god's sake.

The problem I have with Apple is that they expect people to pay at least double what the hardware is worth and then they basically attribute the price as being worthwhile because the software that holds it together is so perfect. Except that there is a rough ratio being held for total market hardware cost to Apple's OS + Hardware cost, basically the price of Apple's core software increases based on the hardware cost.

If I went and bought a cheap little basic workstation for a few hundred dollars, I should expect to have to pay about a hundred dollars or so if I want to install Windows 7. Now if I went and spent a couple thousand on a new gaming rig and you told me that in order to install Windows 7, instead of paying 100 dollars, I would have to pay 600 dollars for the exact same program, I would say you're crazy.

That's totally what Apple is doing, how many times have you heard obnoxious Apple fanboys say that you get what you pay for? Probably a lot, depending on how many fanboys you know, because that's exactly what Apple wants consumers to believe, that the bits Apple specifically puts in are what makes it worth it. The hardware itself is all designed by the same people who designed your PC's hardware, sure they may have made slightly different named models to use in Apple's products, but they have the same potential as their PC counterparts.

The software is what makes it better, I've never really seen a convincing argument that the Mac's software is any better than a PC's, but that's a matter of opinion. But what's not an opinion is that paying up to a thousand dollars for an operating system is bullshit. Insulting the consumer's intelligence is bullshit. Trying to sell an ordinary penny for a dollar is bullshit.

Apple is bullshit.
Apple, buy into an expensive closed system that's inferior both in terms of technology (WinTel) and software (Linux)!

Yeah, this is what happens when all the tech companies see that Apple is worth like 12% of the NASDAQ, and they want to be worth that much too, so they decide to try to be Apple. It never works of course, and just angers their existing client base, hence why Research in Motion is destined to simply be a patent troll for the rest of its days, imitating Apple practically killed them.

I hope that Windows 8 flops horribly on desktop and Microsoft will pull their heads out of their asses for Windows 9. If not, better hope someone comes up with some customized shells for future Windows OSes, or Linux finally gets decent gaming support.

I would love macs, specifically the OSX as it is a great unix based operating system, but the people at Apple are such bastards when it come to pricing and hardware control. Result is that its never really worth it to buy a Mac.

Yes because having to push with TWO whole fingers is just far too daunting. How do people manage to do it all the time?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Honestly, I don't really care. I'm on a Mac right now and it's fine for me, but I wouldn't honestly go out of my way to say one is better than the other. It all comes down to personal preference.

But didn't you know that Microsoft can't make two good OS's consecutively?

Windows 95-> Windows 98 -> Widows ME -> Windows XP -> Vista -> Windows 7

You'll notice that the line up is reminiscent of the boy-girl-boy-girl order of your early school days.

PC. Why would I spend three thousand dollars on an 800 dollar computer in a fancy case running a locked-the-fuck-down OS that doesn't let me do what I want with my own hardware and locks me out of half my game library?
Uhm, you might think that you pay 3000 dollars for a 800 worth of hardware, but that's not all.

For one you get a fruit on your computer. Seriously, what other companies offer free fruit? Then you get a restrictive OS and the BIOS is fixed in a way to make it harder to install a different OS. You also get limited and expensive upgrade support in case there's something you want to improve. Then of course don't forget that you get to know that your computer is hand made by Chinese kids.

OT: If no-one got my sarcasm in the above section I will say I always prefer PC over Mac. Also Mac is a PC. There used to be some difference in the type of hardware in the different PCs that made some computers PC and others not, but these days that's a thing of the past. I have a custom built PC for gaming that allows me to install the OS I want. I wont ever buy a pre-set computer because I like having complete control of the parts inside. There are often expensive computers on the market that aren't worth it because one of the parts are put in to save money. Like a crappy slow hard drive which attracts some because it's 2TB big. I don't know that much about computers, but I know enough to get the computer I want rather than the computer HP or Apple wants to sell me.

While I can understand some reasons for getting a Mac(better for creating pics/songs), I'd never get myself one due to them being overpriced, underpowered and locked down - besides, I'd never be able to afford one.

Im currently running XP on my main machine simply due to not having the capacities to go for Win 7, and ParanoidLinux on my old laptop which I use for backups of important data, online banking etc...

OT: Between those two OS, Windows all the way. While it's true that windows OSes break more often, it isn't true that it is due to bad design. It is due to viruses. And before any of those fanboys start circlejerking about MacOS security, remember that noone writes viruses for those. If they would, most macs would be rendered unusable faster than you can spell "Overpriced Security Patch Incoming".

Assuming it is Windows vs Mac, then I'll pick Windows. Nowadays only need a PC for gaming and Windows wins that hands down.

Depends on what you want to use it for. If you want to play games or use engineering programs, get a (Windows) PC. If you want a range of multimedia options and ease of use, get a Mac.

I play games and use engineering applications, so I use Windows. Simple.
