Is it possible?

I'm thinking it is very highly unlikely, and honestly, the cause of all the problems in the Middle East can be summed up in one word, Islam. Keep in mind, I have nothing against Muslims, just Islam. It is the root of all the problems there, violence against secular Governments, suicide bombings in residential areas, persecution of the Christians, women and especially Jews.

I see almost no solution here, negotiation is not an option because fundamental Muslims will fight anything that doesn't exactly fit with Islam(I.E Education of women, other religions, secular government) the only way I see this ever stopping is that extremely stable secular governments are established, and they teach moderation and tolerance to students, but this requires support from powerful nations like America, The UK, ect, and that makes the situation worse, for the short term at least, and chances of this working are not very good.

What are your thoughts?

Islam isn't the problem. Fundamentalism is. Eventually, modern technology will be spread there. With that, the internet and outside thought/knowledge and eventually secularism.

It is possible but it won't happen because it would be wrong to kill everyone causing trouble:)

It's doubtful. Very, very doubtful. The various groups there just hate each other too damn much. When there's that much hate and it's bred into them from birth, there's really not much you can do.

I highly doubt it, due to all the conflicting beliefs and the apparently preference to violence over negotiation or cooperation, but I might be surprised someday.

Don't forget the ridiculous aggression of the State of Israel and their apparent will to out-bomb the Palestinians out of the region. It's a double-sided coin, wherein both are in the wrong, especially when the U.S. is constantly pressured into supporting Israel with our tax dollars.

Fundamental Islam wasn't an issue until the Ayatollah Khomeini showed up on the scene in Iran, and revitalized radical Islamic sentiments. The conflict has now lost both a meaningful racial or religious context, and it is now just wrestling with new generations who are thrown into the frontlines of the carnage and encouraged by propaganda and family horror stories meant to nurture feelings of vengeance.

Your idea of getting the West even more involved is, franky, a bad idea, because if they can't learn to get along themselves, they never will for all the mediative efforts we put forth. I say we just withdraw entirely from the region, let themselves kill each other to the last man, and not, under any circumstances, get militarily/diplomatically/economically involved.

The problem is it's a basically tribal area where the resources available don't match up to the number of people.

They fought each other before westerners had even managed to make wheels, they fought each other when they traded with us, they fought us, then each other through the crusades, they fought each other and the turks and us in World War 1, they fight each other now and they'll still be fighting each other long after the oil is gone and us western devils are but a distant memory.

You get it in almost every species on the planet, when there isn't enough to go around they fight over what little there is. Most of the Middle east is mountains and desert, there isn't much to go around.

Of course we haven't helped recently, what with Isreal, putting the Ayatollahs in Iran (funny, the news always neglects to mention that), the various oil conflicts etc.

Here's your peace

But really the middle east has been at war for basically 1000 or so years...I doubt it will end soon.

As much as I hate to say it, I doubt that there will be.

Recently even the head of UK armed forces in Afghan said that UK troops could be there in some capacity for the next 40 years. Is that really worth it? Is it worth the lives of our soldiers?

But then, if we leave, no doubt radical Islam will rear its ugly head again, and probably regain control, and then all abuse of basic human rights that go with it will come along again, and we will have abandoned the innocent people of that region to a pretty grim fate.

Therein lies the problem. If we leave the middle east alone and turn a blind eye, then the situation for normal people could be pretty poor. If we intervene in countries, then many soldiers, ours and theres die, and the monetary cost is substantial. Either option is not good, and as such peace in the near future seems very hard to achieve, as either choice will result in violence.

Sorry if that made very little sense, I'm fucking tired, but felt the need to write something nonetheless :p

Israel's the problem. That and fundamentalist Islam.
Care to elaborate on how Israel is the main problem? I'm not being twat-ish, I just wanna know :)

I can see how they're a problem to the several countries that they share borders with, but not to the entire middle east?

They have fought each other for pretty much all time, so, No.
Since the start of the world they have been fighting. You're quite right, and until religion is put aside the region will never be calm. Less Israel gets tired of their bullshit and stop being bullied.

Yeah, you'd think America would've learnt not to mess with foreign governments and situations after that, the mujahideen and the viet cong fiascos.

I maintain though, Israel is probably one of the biggest destabilizing factors in the whole equation. The shit they manage to pull just because they're backed by Uncle Sam is ludicrous.
