Photorealism is a funny thing, being in a game with all its variables and limitations there'll always be something that keeps it from being perfect.

And I don't mind realism. It makes for lots of pretty things to look at in Crysis.

I disagree. I mean, ok, some games do that. But as veloper says, Depth of Field is the fix, thanks to DirectX 11. If you have STALKER: Call of Pripyat, try downloading the AtmosFear V2 addon/mod. In Zaton you can look clear across the landscape on a clear sunny day and things look really good for quite a distance, with some blurring going on far away. Pull out a scope and zoom in, and that distant blurry object is now in focus. There's also days that are foggy, and then you can't see more than 20 feet in front of you. There's also plenty of camera effects thanks to other mods. Ceano's mod, CfP, your guy gets tired (usually at night) and will yawn, causing the camera to slightly droop and go fuzzy. Other times, you get radiation and then everything gets kind of static-y and often the screen gets really bright or really dim. When injured, things get blurry and distorted.

As the technology allows it, game developers/graphics designers are indeed working on bringing this level of realism the OP wants. Metro 2033 is also really good at this type of thing. Overall, with DX11 gaining in momentum you'll find that there won't be much to complain about - other than needing to buy new hardware =P

Sadly, consoles are stuck in DX9 days and it makes it far more difficult to attain those effects. Next generation, maybe...
