Long story short. I bought the Mumford & Sons album a while back when it was new, I left it at a friends and thought, oh bugger, I have no longer got any contact with him. A while on I remembered how much I liked that album and bought it again. Unfortunately my car was broken into recently and they took my radio and all my CD's.

It was one of a very few albums I hadn't backed up on my laptop.

So the poll question, is it acceptable if I download that album?

I guess I just want to use the collective morality of the internet to back a decision I want to do. So yeah, cheers for your input.

Oh also sorry for another piracy thread.

You bought it once, you own it and should have no worries about DLing it as many times as you want. This should be supported by the publishers, but since they are money grubbing scum, you are forced to go to other places.

Give up on the album, it's obviously cursed. /silly

While I wouldn't see anything wrong with you downloading the album, if in doing so you help others do the same or encourage further piracy there might be a problem. For example, if you got it from a torrent, you'd still be engaging in copyright infringement because you would be uploading it to others. Downloading it from a direct-download site might provide the uploader some sort of financial gain--that was one of the sticking points in the MegaUpload case.

If you know anyone personally who has the CD, you could have them rip it for you. That avoids the sticky questions of whether you're helping others engage in piracy or providing some financial gain to a pirate.

Or you could try to find some way to get in touch with the guy you left the first CD with...maybe through a mutual friend or something. You can find people on the internet...

Move to belgium. Over here downloading is technicly not illegal. As long as you don't sell your downloads and/or give them to other people.

It's some stupid law really. Because here it is ok to tape something that is on TV. As long as you watch whatever you taped in your own home.

There are no anti-piracy laws here and so... Downloading falls under the same law as the TV thing. Stupid I know but there you have it :).

PS: I do not support internet piracy and sorry for the bad spelling. I blame my education.

So, you've paid for it twice, lost it once and had it taken from you for the other. I probably say it's morally acceptable, if I was in your position I probably would pirate it.

On a separate note, look into using a service like Google music. Then you can download all the music you've lost whenever you want.

Morally yes, I think its fine. You've already paid for it twice. It's still illegal though

If you have to ask then no, it's not okay. Frankly I'd just sign up with a music service.

Or there's always YouTube.

Wont get many people voicing in favour of piracy, against forum regulations and all. Though I hope the poll shows what people really think (73% yes to 27% no when I write this)

Since you have already bought it this is one of the few times piracy is completely fine as you already payed for it and you're not doing any harm re-acquiring it. While im normally very much against piracy when you have already bought the product then there is no harm in downloading it again because you have actually paid the price for it and that money has already gone through. You first obtained it when you originally bought it not when you pirated it therefore you paid the price you were meant to pay for it. Its got little difference from backing it up on your computer and while the act is illegal the circumstances behind it make it completely acceptable.

So I get a pack of bubblegum from the store. My friend wanted some gum, I let them borrow it. They ate it all.

It gets worse. I get another pack of bubblegum, the same brand that I so freaking love, from the store again. Some jerk-off breaks into my car, takes the coffee that was in my cup holder, takes my loose change in the little dashboard box, and my second packet of bubblegum is gone.

Now, would it be okay, since I bought the bubblegum twice now, if I went and took some for free? Even if I got it from someone else who took it for free?

If the cd is less-than-new, you should be able to grab it online new for relatively nothing by now. And besides, if you pirate it, you don't get the pleasure of holding the nifty album cover art and case in your hand.

If you like the music, buying it again will directly support the people that wrote and performed that music. In fact, if those people have a website, buy it direct from the source to tell them that you fully appreciate what they did to make your day.

And this time, make a copy of the CD you buy so you will not have such an unfortunate dilemma again. Call it a lesson learned. I'm quite shocked that you took out the time to acquire a digital copy of all your other music, but somehow didn't do the same for this CD that you repeatedly state you love and enjoy.

Of course it's acceptable, you've paid for two of the same album, you deserve to have at least one copy of it, even if it is downloaded.

Your morals are the ones that matter IMO.

Do you feel justified for this? I don't really think it is necessary to ask others on such a matter.

If I were in your shoes, I would buy the album again. I am guessing you like the band enough to be willing to support them. The more you want to do that, the better.

You can't justify theft. That is why piracy is so rampant, because EVERYONE has a justification for it so they think they are the exception to the law. Just buy a new copy on ebay or something (probably from the guy who stole it) and move on. Just because I bought a book once doesn't entitle me to go get a brand new copy of that book whenever I want, even if I lost the first one.

Heres what matters: in the eyes of the law, its copyright infringement.
No, it isn't.

More specifically, not every country has the same copyright laws as the good ol' US of A.
