Myself and a few people I'm with are planning to make a video game to test our technical skills and I would like some feed back on what kind of game seems most interesting to you guys. While I wont bore you with too many details, we have two ideas we thought about trying.

1. An auto-scrolling rpg with random dungeons, loot and monsters called "Dungeon Rush"
2. Tetris style game with the pieces being zombie parts that move around once they reach the bottom of the pit called "Zombie Burial"

Which one do you think we should make?

Of the two, Dungeon Rush sounds far more appealing since part of the beauty of Tetris is lining up all the blocks exactly the way you want then annihilating rows at a time with the straight line blocks. Having them move around does not really enhance the experience in my opinion. This also could be a gripe on my part but "Dungeon Rush" sounds very... video gamey sounding. I realize that's what it is, but it's still kind of played out if not already owned by another game.

I'd say something easy to make like an RPG with RPG maker VX Ace. It's really easy to use compared to other programs. I'm of course not aware of how skilled you guys are at making something, but I hear that a lot of new developers have to abandon the project because it's either too much for them or because the code became a mess. Since you have a group, you stand a better chance.

I think you should really watch some Extra Credits episodes, especially their most recent series on making your first game before you decide what you're going to make. And don't ask us what we want you to make, make something you're both comfortable making and also capable of making. And really give those EC (and other) episodes a watch.

I'd suggest this; develop the ideas more. While asking random yobbos on the internet to choose could probably be a solution to some problems, I'd treat it as a very dire emergency tactic. Keep working on the ideas, and the better one will be revealed, or certainly the one that interest you more.

Go with your heart Daniel. If you're not enjoying it and it's not fun to play, others surely won't enjoy it either.

EDIT: And I'm not voting because there's really not that much information about either type. I'm totally against clones of something, but building on the gameplay experience to make it a fun and addicting game is good.

Make the tetris thing first because it's about 20x easier, then when you got some experience you go for a bigger fish.
But ultimately the choice should be yours, making stuff you want to play works out far better for the projects.
