Considering I'm a 20-something white man with brown hair, stubble, and a well built physique, I'm basically already playing characters that look like me any time I play most shooters, or western games as a whole.

So I guess to answer the question, yeah, I wouldn't mind playing game characters that look exactly like me.

Oh look a thread I haven't seen before! I wonder what its title is?

/facepalm

Always remember to proof read before posting kids.

OT: Hmm, I think I'd rather go with the option to make a custom character. I play video games to forget that I'm a broke, miserable college student.

I generally try to make my characters look somewhat like me, at least on first playthroughs. Especially in Bioware/Bethesda RPGs, which give you a lot of choices and let you tailor your character's personality and make it more "me-like." That being said, I recently tried to roughly recreate myself in Fire Emblem: Awakening (not many options, but I tried) and I'm regretting it a lot. Seeing the character say a lot of things that I would never actually say is weird.

Also, Mass Effect. Mainly because I'm a super skinny dude with long, bushy hair and male mass effect characters are only allowed to be thick-necked space marines with military haircuts. I just used the default Shep, I tried playing around with the character creator and everything I made looked awful.

I know that feeling, I managed to get a MA character very close to my facial features (even the haircut), however the body was so uncustomizable it was laughable... those legs go on for days. o_O

A pale, chubby nerd with glasses and long, brown hair?
Sure, why not?

In a game like Dragon Age or Mass Effect that'd be fucking brilliant. I probably wouldn't do it in Dark Souls though, i don't think it'd be... good for my mental health.

Hm, i wonder what WoW would look like if this became real...

I wouldn't be into it too much - I don't really have a great deal of attachment to my appearance - it's not that I'm unattractive or anything, I just don't really care, and don't really see it that often because I don't usually look in mirrors. With good character creation options, its possible to make many faces which I would find much more interesting.

Moreover, I don't really care for the idea of LITERALLY playing as myself, because by the very nature of the game, I'm limited in what actions I can take as the character, so as far as I'm concerned, the character isn't me, it's a character who looks like me, which, again, I don't find all that interesting.

I might, but only if it were an option alongside traditional character creation. I don't think looking like yourself should be forced upon you in the same way I hate it when websites try to make me use my real name. The good thing about making a character look like you in an RPG is that nobody knows but yourself. If you knew everyone was a direct analogue of themselves in real life, there would be a lot of unnecessary crap that would start happening.

I don't see why I wouldn't, but I also don't see how it would add to the experience. There are some games where I attempt to get it as close to my personal likeness as possible. For instance, in Mass Effect I created Shepherd to look as close to me as possible, albeit with a more military edge. I preferred doing that than making a character that failed to resemble me at all because it just fit with my "me in the future" fantasy. On the other hand, sometimes I just want to become someone else. For instance, I created an honor-seeking Nord who looked nothing like me for Skyrim because I thought it would be more fun than making a Breton who looked exactly like me, which is what I did for Oblivion. The same thing happened with Dragon Age: Origins. I'd much rather play an elf who looks nothing like me than a human who resembles me in every aspect. To me, character creation is really just the first step in determining the experience you wish to craft for yourself. If you become another person who may or may not be like yourself, then make them look different. If, on the other hand, you want to imagine yourself in the game's world, then make them look like yourself.

I will give it a try.
While i'm not a beauty, and while i do enjoy playing as someone else, i wouldn't reject it.

I would definitely try it. When playing games I usually create at least one character based on myself because it's been my dream ever since I was a child to be in my own video game, and character creators are likely the closest thing I'll ever get to that. On the other hand I'd like the ability to edit my character afterwards bit bit so I can make myself look a bit more how I'd like to look, and to make myself fit in the game a bit better, rather than just plain old me. Of course I wouldn't use it exclusively and I'd make other characters too.

When I play a new RPG, my first character is one who is supposed to be me so I can effectively roleplay when I don't know the plot. In future playthroughs, I use different characters depending on what the context allows, but the first is always me. So yes, I would definitely play with a character who looked exactly like me. I've gotten the general look down with sliders, but never all the way. Not least of all because protagonists tend to be taller and in better shape than I am.

The game where I've created a character that came closest to looking like me was Dragon's Dogma. It's too bad that game has so many design oversights that make me hate playing it.

Captcha is "easy as cake." Oh if only.

I remember when I first got Mass Effect 1 I attempted to make my character look like me. It did not turn out well.

If I ever get really fat, it'd probably be fun to play a spectacle-fighter type game, if only for the cathartic pleasure of seeing some pale, blob-like creature pull off SSS ranked combos. I couldn't see doing it for RPG's though, my characters vary too much and I'm not really a big fan of my looks.

I would.

It would tell a lot from a design perspective to see how a player chooses to act with a character that looks and speaks exactly like them. Lots of moral dilemma and cognitive dissonance, hooray!

Of course. I'm one of those people that tries to make my character look as close to myself as possible so this would only make it easier to do so.
